POST MORTEM REPORT DATE
March 2, 1988
SPECIES: Pseudorca
erassidens
OWNER: Sea Lite Park
ANIMAL: Makapuu.• s baby
HISTORY: Animal was born at Sea Life Park in May, 1986. For a period some time ago, the water had been treated with copper sulfate at a level of 0.1 ppm. The past three months the water has been treated with chlorine at a level ot 0.3 ppm. Other than an eye problem--right eye olosed--for the last three months he did not show any signs of illness . Prior to and during that period, however, his mother had two episodes of inappetance, developed eye problems , and was given oral antibiotic medication . On the morning of the day before his death, he was seen floating high in the water, and appeared somewhat disoriented. However, he was able to maneuver around the tank and continued to do some some normal behaviors. , A twenty four hour watch was es t ablished. The same behav ior continued and he did not nurse . The mother was very attenti v e , encouraging swimming and ass isting if he seemed to be in any trouble. "'
He appeared more disoriented shortly before death, and died mi d mo r ning without much warning and with a minimum of agonal signs .
Some difficulty was encountered removing the body from the tank, as the mother was protective . This was accomplished early afternoon, and the post mortem was conducted several hours
