G r e at c r e at i v e i s g r e at fo r b u s i n e ss . Award-winning agencies attract talent. That talent creates award-winning work that gets results and attracts clients. It’s that simple. Awards Shows present an opportunity to get recognition; for you, your agency, and your clients. They’re also an opportunity to claim bragging rights. This year’s Annual Show was no exception in bringing together talented people and inspiring work. The work speaks for itself. No need to brag. In this book, you will find the best work in our region; a manifestation of the hard work and creative collaboration that we all love. In true Colorado entrepreneurial spirit, the community stepped up and took it to the next level. We asked you to get involved and, oh boy, did you ever! Starting with the call for entries and culminating in the Annual Show tonight, we’ve had several dozen creatives donate their talents to the show. I can’t thank you all enough. We received 425 entries from 75 different agencies. Our panel of judges boasted 14 award-winning creative influencers from the U.S. and abroad. Last year, we sent four Top Honors entries on to The One Show. One entry went all the way to the finals. Once again, we will submit all eligible ADCD Top Honors entries to The One Show to compete on the international stage. I’d like to congratulate all the winners on their inspiring work and for entering the show. Thank you to the team of ADCD volunteers, creatives, judges, and sponsors who helped make this show possible. It’s been a true pleasure acting as the President of ADCD, and I’m honored to have served the creative community of Colorado, which is quickly becoming one of the most creative places in the country.

C o n g r at u l at i o n s , c o n n i e a s h e r Connie Asher started her design firm in 1977 in her basement with a t-square and a forty dollar Sears drawing board. “As designers, we had the privilege of watching the world change with the onslaught of the computer and the Internet. We gained full control over what we designed and produced. To have been part of those continuing changes was a phenomenon,” said Asher. She created and ran Asher Studio, working for a wide range of local and national clients including Saunders Construction, Kaiser Permanente, and Cheley Colorado Camps. Asher Studio’s strength was its people—a group of strong, gifted designers working with the best and most talented writers, photographers, printers, and programmers in Denver to produce their work. Former ADCD President, Errol Beauchamp said of Connie, “She deserves this award and represents an authentic personality that has always supported the design community.” Connie graduated from South Dakota State University in 1968 with a BA Degree in Fine Art. “I was blessed to find early jobs in the field without the benefit of graphic design training—I am self taught.” In 1989, she was one of the 23 founding members of the Colorado chapter of AIGA. In 2004, Connie was the recipient of the Belmar Award for Achievement in Art and Design. She is a 2007 AIGA Fellow. After 30 years in the business, Connie sold Asher Studio in 2007. She currently resides in Congress Park with her husband and golden retriever, Ruby. She is a silversmith, a gardener, and an avid golfer. The Art Directors Club of Denver thanks Connie Asher for her dedication to the club and the advertising and design community in Colorado. We honor her with the 2013 ADCD Legacy Award.

But when you have a new game that requires matching just three single-digit numbers to win, you give fate the opportunity to speak louder and more dramatically than ever before. So, to launch the Colorado Lottery’s new game, Pick 3, we created a TV campaign that accentuated the voice of fate in the lives of lottery players. broadcast advertising BUSINESS CHALLENGE: To create a broadcast television spot that breaks through the clutter of the LA and SF markets in support of the brand’s integrated launch campaign. DRIVING INSIGHT: With LA and SF being two epicenters where U.S. and Mexican lifestyles intertwine organically, this provided an opportunity to tell a culturally relevant story endemic to Del Real Foods target markets. CREATIVE SOLUTION: “It’s About to Get Real” features our Mexican Stereotypes Trio of Lucho the Luchador, Mario the Skateboarding Mariachi, and Piti the Piñata in a humorous spot that asks consumers to look past the clichés to find the real—yet convenient—Mexican authenticity that the Del Real Foods brand delivers. broadcast advertising Jeremy Wade, host of Animal Planet’s all-time #1 rated show, River Monsters, has combed the ends of the earth in search of the big catch. So, when Animal Planet came to Mrs. K, requesting a post-apocalyptic vision for the new season, we knew just where to shoot—the Salton Sea. Years of polluted runoff have left an eerie landscape of salt-encrusted abandoned resorts and beaches made of bones. Turns out, Dr. Wade had been hoping to check it out too, so we put on our waders and headed to the desert. Animal Planet was so thrilled with the resulting footage, they are airing a :90 trailer—unheard of in the promo world. Man Th Man Th Gentle Health
erapy: erapy mental Care Kit
cactus
design—3-dimensional Men like to fix things themselves. If given the choice, a guy will choose a hammer and nail over a carpenter and duct tape over a plumber. Unfortunately, duct tape doesn’t work on a man’s mental health. And when it comes to dealing with serious issues such as depression, anger, anxiety, and drug addiction, men will choose dangerous and self-destructive solutions instead of seeking help. To extend the Man Therapy campaign and to drive traffic to ManTherapy.org, we created the Man Therapy Gentlemental Health Care Kit—a helpful, but irreverent, tool to help men take care of their mental health themselves. It encourages them to think and talk about their mental health and suggests manly ways to fix issues. In our mental health care kit, guys can find little-known ways to take control of their mental health. Design—Brand Development Gränd Salon moved into a new LoHi location in January, a renovated greenhouse redesigned into a spa-like modern space. Their branding was updated to reflect the new space and promote new spa offerings, such as mani/ pedis. We created a new website in Word Press to enable the client to blog and offer “Killer Deals” at will. For the printed materials, we combined the red of the original logo with natural textures. We laser-engraved wood veneer for stylist cards and services lists then created red and kraft appointment cards and red emery boards with a simple message “Look grand from head to toe” to promote the new location and spa services. Cards were laser-engraved on wood. Creative Director: Helen Young Designer: Emily Fitzgerald Printer: Public Letterpress Copywriter: Lynn Clark 2013 ADCD Annual Show

Postscript Postcards no v el design studio
i l l u s t r at i o n We like to think that Postscript postcards aren’t typical and are more of a letterpressed art print that can be mailed. Postscript is the work of Jared and Rachel Rippy, husband and wife design duo in Denver, Colorado. All of our postcards are crafted with love. Our inagural series for Denver streets takes a fun look into the history and meaning behind the names of streets. Series one takes on the literal history behind the naming process of Wazee, Wadsworth, Ogden, Lafayette, and Broadway with a conceptual Art Deco era motif. Our second street series interprets Otis, York, Pontiac, Colfax, and Bannock into creatures depicting certain characteristics of the area they abide and the meanings of the names. More street series are in the works, and keep your eye out for other series, as well. Art Directors: Jared Rippy, Rachel Rippy Illustrator: Jared Rippy Printer: Banshee Press, Britt Madden (Owner) 48

Dream Vault for American Family Insurance the integer group
interactive advertising The Dream Vault from American Family Insurance was created to provide utility to American Family clients as well as potential clients. Understanding how to use mobile devices to drive advocacy and awareness, Integer developed a mobile experience that provided real utility to the general public. The Dream Vault app provided undeniable utility to anyone who had assets to protect, and did so under the American Family brand. Using the mobile device, users can go through their house room by room, at their leisure, and document their assets in case of loss. By taking a photo, adding a description, a value, and any other relevant tags, protecting their American dream became easier. This data was sent to the cloud for storage where it could be retrieved at any time on any device. This became a huge cost savings for users and put American Family Insurance top of mind when the time comes to choose an insurance provider. In the case of an actual American Family customer, these items can be reviewed by an agent and actually insured with the use of the app. Integer realized that, by using the little phone in your pocket and the power of American Family Insurance, we could protect a lifetime of hard work. Polaris Snowmobiles MY 1 3 I n - S e a s o n Creative Campaign the integer group
photography The snowmobile category is ruled by featureheavy technical specs. Ironic, considering the obvious passion that this segment holds. To win, we knew we would need to break free of the spec-heavy convention and tap in to the passion that riders have for the sport. First, we shifted the voice from the engineer to reflect the aspirations and language of that of a real “terrain-dominating” rider. We used sparse, minimal layouts that let over-the-top aspirational photography own the page. This created an ownable look that brought to life a rider’s idealistic vision of a bluebird powder day. Polaris snowmobiles will help you see the ride differently with this bold and simple approach. The campaign ran in national Print/ TV, Web, Mobile, and Retail. print advertising & design Do at the Zoo is an annual fundraising event at the Denver Zoo showcasing dishes from dozens of Denver’s best restaurants and cocktails and beers from local distilleries and breweries. printing excellence We tend to do a lot of eating and drinking, and we wanted to create a piece that would help us document those experiences in a fun and simple way. Using our vintage press, we letterpressed each coaster, handing-feeding them one at a time into the press. Each set is then hand-numbered and finished with a custom letterpressed tag. END IT MOVEMENT Victors

S poils
Public service Today, there are 27 million people who are enslaved in 161 countries around the world. Yet, almost no one is aware that more people are enslaved today than at any other time in history. We were approached by a coalition of anti-slavery organizations who wanted to unite with a message to spread slavery awareness to 18- to 25- year-olds. We found, in the process, that traditional marketing tactics and preachy, controlling PSAs only perpetuated cause-fatigue. So, we created a social movement from scratch. Using non-traditional media and tools to empower our audience to become freedom fighters, we asked the world to be “In it to END IT.” Executive Creative Director: Chad Walker Creative Director: Kate McQuail Art Directors: Marco Merced, Travis Brown, Fabien Dodard Copywriter: Kate McQuail Photo Editor/Retoucher: Marco Merced Production Artist: John Gerweck Digital Production Company: Tooth LLC Print Production Company: XYZ Graphics Programmer/Developer: Tooth LLC

Man Therapy: Man Therapy G e n t l e m e n ta l H e a lt h C a r e K i t C actus
Public service Men like to fix things themselves. In our mental health care kit, guys can find little-known ways to take control of their mental health. wild fire tees WILD
FIRE
TEES
Public service Formed in immediate response to the Waldo Canyon Fire, which destroyed 346 homes in Colorado Springs last summer, Wild Fire Tees had a simple mission: sell well-designed tees and prints, and donate all proceeds to ongoing, statewide wildfire relief, which included the most devastating fire in history to date, this year’s Black Forest Fire. We launched this campaign in mere weeks, designing everything from the website to the tees and using social media to invite buyers to show us their Wild Fire Tees online. One popular feature was the ability for buyers to buy a tee for a firefighter; over 400 tees were delivered to firefighters around the state. To date, the Wild Fire Tees campaign has sold $850,000 worth of merchandise and donated $400,000 to wildfire victims and first responders. Each viewfinder came with the project highlight reel as well as a few vintage Colorado-themed reels to celebrate the awesomeness of our state. web design Fjällräven, the Swedish outdoor equipment retailer best known for its colorful Kånken rucksacks, appointed VOLTAGE to provide a website redesign that would capture its increasingly urban sensibility without abandoning the authentic outdoorsman history that defined its success. The new design lets the products speak for themselves, trading outdoorsy clichés for a crisp, white platform and pops of the brand’s iconic red type. Gates Carbon Drive: Website cactus
web design Knowing that the Gates Carbon Drive site needed to connect with a broader consumer audience and attract them to bicycling, we approached the project like the launch of a lifestyle brand rather than the typical engineering perspective used by most component brands in the bike industry. To achieve this, we developed a modern white-on-white theme that exemplified the key attributes of the Gates Carbon Drive: clean, smart, and simple.
