Hymn of Praise

VeRSe 1

For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord, For a just and equal sharing, Of the things that earth affords To a life of love and action, Help us rise and pledge our word. Help us rise and pledge our word.

VeRSe 2

Lead us forward into freedom, From despair your world release That, redeemed from war and hatred, All may come and go in peace Show us how through care and goodness, Fear will die and hope increase. Fear will die and hope increase

VeRSe 3

All that kills abundant living, Let it from the earth be banned Pride of status, race or schooling, Dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice, May we hallow life’s brief span. May we hallow life’s brief span.

iSAiAh 56:1-8 (niV) This is what the Lord says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed. 2Blessed is the one who does this— the person who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it, and keeps their hands from doing any evil.”

1

Let no foreigner who is bound to the Lord say, “The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.” And let no eunuch complain, “I am only a dry tree.” 4For this is what the Lord says: “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant—5to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will endure forever.

3

And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant—7these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” 8The Sovereign Lord declares—he who gathers the exiles of Israel: “I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered.”

Pastor:

-----------------------------------------------Mentors, what is your pleasure concerning these candidates for womanhood?

Mentors:

Pastor, Elders, Congregation and Parents, we give these candidates back to you in the same spirit of love that you gave them to us. We assure you that we have trained them in the ways they should go and affirm that they are ready to assume the responsibilities of womanhood.

Pastor/Minister:

Elders, what is your pleasure?

Elders:

Pastor, we have tested these candidates and have found them to be fit for the journey of womanhood that lies ahead. We, therefore, affirm their movement from one clearly defined state of existence to the next.

Pastor:

Congregation, what is your pleasure?

Congregation:

As people of faith who understand the need for Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian women in the village, we affirm these candidates as the new women they have become.

Pastor:

Parents are you ready now to accept the fact that your daughters have become women and to give them the respect and responsibilities that come with womanhood?

Parents:

We affirm that our daughter has become a woman and will not hold back anything she has earned in accord with that status.

Pastor:

Candidates, hearing these affirmations made in the presence of God, do you now accept the identity and responsibilities of womanhood that have been conferred upon you by your extended family?

Initiates:

As I have put aside my childish ways, I accept the wisdom of my elders who have guided me into womanhood and I pledge to demonstrate with my heart, mind, soul and body that I am the woman you have recognized.

Pastor:

Prayer of Affirmation

book signing today! sunday, JunE 26, 2016 In Wright Chapel, following the 11:00 a.m. worship service

J. Marcellus Burke will sign his premiere novel, The Black Knights. American history books teach us that the Tuskegee Airmen were the first known military men of African descent to fight in World War II. However, Marcellus Burke’s The Black Knights reveals that Germany had the first aviators of African descent serving in the Luftwaffe. Hitler’s military had black pilots flying before the Tuskegee Airmen ever made an appearance. Enlisting in the army at age 17, Burke served as a combat engineer and cartographer (map maker) in World War II and knows first hand that African Americans were not adequately credited for their contributions in Germany, Russia or Great Britain. The high level of disrespect leveled by the media toward our pastor emeritus during the presidential election of 2008, particularly the disregard for Dr. Wright’s illustrious military career, motivated Mr. Burke to write The Black Knights. He began the book in 2009, at the age of 82, because of the scarcity of information on the role African American played in World War II and he seeks to rectify this. Though the characters in The Black Knights are fictional, the events and other details are real. excerpted/adapted from Chicago Independent Bulletin, Marcie Hill, Dec. 2014

On behalf of the Endeleo Institute, Trinity United Church of Christ and Real Men Charities, we would like to thank everyone for your servant leadership in engaging residents of Lowden Homes for fellowship and a healthy food tasting on Father’s Day. This was truly a ministry moment and we couldn’t have done it without you. Special, special thanks to all of our volunteers (especially our wonderful chefs), Trinity ministries and staff for your incredible sacrifice. We thank Lowden Homes for going out of their way to accommodate us in presenting the first ever, Real Men Cook event, which was the prelaunch to Trinity UCC’s Farmers Market. (Saturdays, July 9th – September 24 from 8:00am - 1:00 pm) The goal was to provide a bit of food for the soul, praying that the aroma and spirit of love would extend beyond the walls of our church to the community. We thank all of the contributors who helped make it possible. Please mark your calendars for July 9th as this summer season, we collectively change our minds and eat for life.

Thank you.
