Tips for Pitching Colorado Nonprofit Week Local Stories Get some attention for the impact your nonprofit is making in the community with these media pitching tips: •

Start by customizing this Press Release Template. Add in details about how your organization is participating in the week’s activities.

Determine if the event or activity is good for media. Think about what would appeal most to readers and viewers. You can use Colorado Nonprofit Week as the news hook to get interest, but it does not need to be the lead.

Gather all available details before pitching to the media outlet. You should be prepared with answers to the 5 W’s: who, what, when, where and why.

Pitch the appropriate contact. Most of the time, you will have better luck reaching out to an individual reporter rather than the editor. Be sure to check the outlet’s website or staff listing to determine the best contact. It is good practice to CC the editor on your email to a reporter, as reporters typically have to run a story idea by their editor first for approval.

Be considerate of the reporter’s timeline and limited resources. They are working on tight deadlines, so make it easy for them to do their job. Keep your pitch brief, offer credible sources for interviews, and avoid sending attachments with your emails.

Offer high-resolution photos. Some smaller local media outlets do not have a staff photographer available, so it is helpful to arrange for your own photos to be taken at your event. If that is the case, be sure to include a detailed caption with correctly spelled names and titles to submit afterward.

Take advantage of YourHub. Denver Post’s YourHub is a great place to post event re-caps with photos if you are unable to secure media coverage from the local papers.

Follow up! Once the story is published, you can share the link via social media (be sure to tag (@) the news source and/or reporter) and post it to your website. And most importantly, remember to send a ‘thank you’ email to the reporter.
