Our Calvary Family is pleased to WELCOME you to our Celebration of the Season of Pentecost. Thank you for joining us in our joyous celebration of love, life, service and fellowship demonstrated to us by our Master and Savior Jesus Christ and carried by us throughout the year! On Sundays, we normally have two distinct liturgies (services). Both include the Eucharist (Communion). During Lent, our 8 AM Sunday Service celebrates the Eucharist with the words of our traditional Rite I liturgy from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. The 10:15 AM Service uses the more contemporary language of our Rite II Liturgy. Additionally: * The 8:00 AM liturgy is celebrated, usually without music. * The 10:15 AM liturgy is a sung Eucharist. During the Season of Pentecost, both Sunday services follow the Rite II Liturgy. For your information and convenience, nursery care is available during the 10:15 AM Service as well as Sunday School for children and youth. We encourage you and your family to try each service to see what fits you best. At Calvary, everyone celebrates the Eucharist, and we pray that these worship experiences will be a wonderful way to connect all parishioners regardless of age. We strive to build a community where all feel a sense of hope and compassion from a church that welcomes all of God’s children. Please complete a visitor’s card found in the pew rack and place it in the collection tray. We invite you to join us following the service for coffee and fellowship in the meeting rooms in the south end of the Education Wing.

The Rev. Michael D. Rasicci, Rector 222 South Batavia Avenue, Batavia, Illinois 60510-2564 (630) 879-3378 [email protected] www.calvaryepiscopalbatavia.church 3

INFORMATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Nursery Care: Nursery Care is available for infants and toddlers during the 10:15 AM Sunday Service. Youth Christian Education: Youth Christian Education begins at 10:00 AM on Sunday. Our program provides the foundation for a life guided by Christ, emphasizing “love thy neighbor” and service to others. The program is focused on building new relationships and emphasizing that church is fun and that God loves everyone, without exception. Here, we invite all children and families into our ministry. At Calvary, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve God by teaching and forming the next ambassadors of the church. You are always welcome; please join us! First Holy Communion: Youth participation in preparation for their first Holy Communion is coordinated by the Director of Youth Christian Education. Adults should contact the Rector. Confirmation: Youth Confirmation is coordinated by the Director of Youth Christian Education. Confirmation for adults requires participation in Confirmation Classes scheduled in the Spring.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Our Responsibility: What better evidence exists to prove the Grace and Love of our Lord, Jesus Christ than the childhood development of our children? At Calvary, we take that responsibility very cheerfully, yet extremely seriously. Our Director of Youth Christian Ed, Adam McCluskey is a graduate of the General Theological Seminary in New York and completed his studies as a Seminarian at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church in New York City. Adam is well trained for his role. The entire staff at Calvary as well as those volunteers directly responsible for your son or daughter’s Christian Education are subject to a background investigation and must complete the Keeping God’s Children Safe Program. Your child’s safety is as important to us as is his or her Christian Education. Your active participation is not only welcome but is essential to your child’s Christian development! 4

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. Using a story with heart-rending imagery, the prophet Nathan convinces David to admit to his sins of murder and adultery.

First Lesson

2 Samuel 11: 26- 12:13a LEM: A Reading from the Second Book of Samuel

When

the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she made lamentation for him. When the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD, and the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meager fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him.” Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, “As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul; I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more. Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have

10

killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. Thus says the LORD: I will raise up trouble against you from within your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this very sun. For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.” David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” LEM: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm

Psalm 51: 1-13

Please read the Psalm responsively, dividing at the asterisk

Please chant the Psalm to the following tone

1

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; * in your great compassion blot out my offenses.

2

Wash me through and through from my wickedness * and cleanse me from my sin.

11

3

For I know my transgressions, * and my sin is ever before me.

4

Against you only have I sinned * and done what is evil in your sight.

5

And so you are justified when you speak * and upright in your judgment.

6

Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, * a sinner from my mother's womb.

7

For behold, you look for truth deep within me, * and will make me understand wisdom secretly.

8

Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; * wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

9

Make me hear of joy and gladness, * that the body you have broken may rejoice.

10

Hide your face from my sins * and blot out all my iniquities.

11

Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me.

12

Cast me not away from your presence * and take not your holy Spirit from me.

The new Christians at Ephesus are reminded that they now are members of the family of God, and they must make a clean break with their past.

12

13

Give me the joy of your saving help again * and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

Second Lesson

Ephesians 4: 1-16 Reader: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians:

I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.” (When it says, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with 13

which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

The Holy Gospel

John 6: 24-35 Priest: +The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Priest: The next day, when the people who remained after the feeding of the five thousand saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may

14

see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, `He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Gospel Acclamation

Homily – Fr. Rasicci Profession of Faith Priest: Let us profess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed. All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, 15

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 16

Prayers of the People Priest: Gracious and generous God, in Christ you have given us the true bread from heaven which gives life to the world: Hear us as we call upon you, and give us all that we need to lead a life worthy of the calling to which we have been called: Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. LEM: Benevolent and kind God, you have given the Church gifts as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry: Build up the body of Christ until all of us come to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. [pause for silent prayer]

Create in us a clean heart, O God People: And renew a right spirit within us. LEM: Just and compassionate One, raise up for us prophets like Nathan to speak truth to power when those in authority abuse the weak or act unjustly. [pause for silent prayer]

Create in us a clean heart, O God People: And renew a right spirit within us. LEM: Merciful and powerful One, look upon all who suffer throughout the world and spread such humility, gentleness, and patience throughout humanity, that we may bear with one another in love, bringing food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty. [pause for silent prayer]

Create in us a clean heart, O God People: And renew a right spirit within us. 17

LEM: Amiable and bounteous One, open our eyes in this community to see the abundant gifts you give us, so that everyone may turn away from our efforts to gain those things that perish and work instead for the food that endures for eternal life. [pause for silent prayer]

Create in us a clean heart, O God People: And renew a right spirit within us. LEM: Loving and healing God, we offer to your generous hand everyone for whom we pray, especially for those members of the United States Armed Forces and NATO Forces and civilians affected by the fighting in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, the Sudan and other areas of armed conflict and those affected by civil strife in Nicaragua and Venezuela; those whose names are inscribed on the Intercessory Prayer List, in the Intention Books, or in this week’s bulletin, and those you may wish to add now. [please add names either aloud or in silence] We bring our words of grateful thanksgiving, especially for the Scottish Episcopal Church, its Primus, Bishops, Clergy and Faithful; Congregations in the Waukegan Deanery: Holy Apostles, Wauconda; Christ Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Waukegan; and St. Ann, Woodstock. For St. Andrew, Veracruz in our Companion Diocese of Southeast Mexico and for St. Bartholomew, Thangrial in our Companion Diocese of Renk, South Sudan. For those celebrating birthdays this week: Tara Unland, MaryAnn Gee, Bryan Schuerman, Ed Kendall and Pete Jeziorski. Are there any others? [pause] For those celebrating Anniversaries this week: Eddie and Maggie

18

Aquije, Lou and Joyce deMartelly and Terry and Norm Sutherland. Are there any others? [pause] May all who have died feast with Christ, the bread of life, at the banquet table of your eternal life. We remember especially those whose names you would like to mention now: [pause for additional names and silent prayer]

Create in us a clean heart, O God People: And renew a right spirit within us. Priest: In Christ who have called us to the one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism: Feed us with your Spirit, O Father, that we may build up your creation in love, and grow up in every way into him who is our head, Jesus Christ our Savior. People: Amen.

Prayer for the Mission of Our Parish [The Prayer for Mission may be found inside the front cover of the bulletin]

Confession of Sin Priest: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. [Pause for silent examination of our consciences and to ask forgiveness]

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. 19

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. All: Amen.

The Peace Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And also with you.

The Great Thanksgiving

Eucharistic Prayer A

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Priest: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

21

Please kneel

Priest: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." [The Acolyte strikes the chime to remind us of Christ’s presence under the form of bread]

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." [The Acolyte strikes the chime to remind us of Christ’s presence under the form of wine]

Priest: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 22

Priest: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blesseds Albrecht Dürer, Mathias Grünewald, Lucas Cranach the Elder and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. All: AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us 23

from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Priest: People:

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Loose cash placed in the collection plate is provided to the general fund. Every 3rd Sunday, the Open Plate Collection (meaning loose cash) placed in the plate is directed automatically to the Rector's Discretionary Fund. During a special Red Bowl Collection (generally occurring on the 4th Sunday of the month), all gifts (checks and cash) are provided to the announced charity which is listed in the bulletin. And, as always, thank you for your generous financial support!

If you choose to manually push the door open, please push the door all of the way open in order for you to safely clear through the doorway. If you only push the door part way, it will attempt to close and you may become injured if you haven’t completely passed through the doorway. 38

Conservation Reminder

. In a world where doors open automatically, lights magically turn on, water flows from a faucet when your hands are near and automatic dryers turn on in a similar fashion; Here at Calvary, we still do some things the old fashioned way. The rest room lights on the first floor are not controlled by a motion sensor. Please make a point to turn off the rest room lights when you depart if you are the sole person inside. All of our sinks require you to turn them on and off manually. Paper will automatically dispense (we aren’t completely backwards) in the first floor restrooms, but please be judicious in deciding on the number of towels used. The toilets also require a manual flush. One thing that is not in short supply and comes automatically at Calvary is courtesy and a warm smile and greeting when meeting visitors and other parishioners. Again, some old fashioned things are still best!
