11th International Symposium of Facial Plastic Surgery Thank you for being here to join us for this memorable educational event as we celebrate the Academy’s 50th Anniversary

Jonathan M. Sykes, MD Symposium Chair

Anthony P. Sclafani, MD Program Chair

Greetings to all and welcome to the 11th International Symposium of Facial Plastic Surgery! Every four years, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) and the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies (IFFPSS) host an international symposium that brings together facial plastic surgeons from all over the world and in the specialties of facial plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, dermatologic surgery, plastic and cosmetic surgery. This year’s symposium features the latest trends and technologies in facial plastic surgery by offering lectures, panels, workshops and instruction courses led by experts in the field and an exhibition of over 100 companies displaying and introducing their latest products and services. What makes this meeting even more special is the commemoration and celebration of the Academy’s 50th Anniversary. Building on the traditions of the AAFPRS, this meeting explores the latest in techniques and technologies in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Internationally renowned facial plastic surgeons will be joined by colleagues from plastic surgery, dermatology and oculoplastic surgery in discussing the nuances of facial plastic surgery. Cadaver labs focusing on rhinoplasty, facelift, endoscopic brow and midface lift, and blepharoplasty and ptosis repair provide hands-on experience to practice the nuances of specific procedures, while separate workshops on energy-based skin rejuvenation and hair restoration provide in-depth coverage of these topics. A two-day practice management course will cover marketing, social media and the Internet and staffing issues in your practice. This symposium will be held in New York City and in the heart of Times Square which promises to be a venue that will bring fun and excitement to every member of your family. The cultural, recreational and educational opportunities of New York are all within a short distance from the meeting. Like New York itself, take advantage of all that this Symposium offers! Busy, knowledge-filled days, exciting, enjoyable nights- this will be a meeting you never forget! Join us in New York, “The City That Never Sleeps,” for cutting-edge daytime education and fantastic New York experiences afterwards.

INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FACIAL PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY SOCIETIES

Welcome back to "the city that never sleeps", "the Big Apple", "the capital of the world", the Empire City, Gotham, "the center of the universe", or at least our universe this week of the meeting. No matter what you call it, it is New York City and it is great to be back for the 11th International Symposium of Facial Plastic Surgery!

On behalf of the IFFPSS, welcome to the 11th International Symposium. Drs. Sclafani and Sykes have made a great effort to put together a great program that includes all aspects of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and involves a distinguished faculty from all over the world, with the city of New York as the perfect frame for such a wonderful event.

Edward H. Farrior, MD

Jose Juan MontesBracchini, MD

Could any place be more alive than this great city? The shows, the food, the arts, and most of all the conglamoration of the world's most renowned facial plastic surgeons assembled by the meeting chairs Drs. Sykes and Sclafani. It is extra special because we are celebrating our Academy’s 50th Anniversary. . The week will be spectacular with courses, presentations, panels, and seminars addressing the tried and true as well as the latest advances in fillers, neuromodulators, reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Speakers have been assembled from facial plastic surgery, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, and the corporate world to help us all improve our patient care and practice management.

Following the steps of previous symposia, the expected attendance of the 11th Symposium promises to be record-breaking. I am sure that we will have the opportunity to hear from the very best in each area, concepts, tips and pearls of surgical and non surgical procedures, analysis, and results that will finally result in the well being of our patients.

What is being offered by our course directors is magnificent and not a moment should be missed, however, it is important that we all save some energy for Broadway, Fifth Avenue, the Museums of Modern Art, and Natural History and that grand lady the Statue of Liberty, to mention only a few and barely scratching the surface of what is available to do and see.

Los doctores Sclafani y Sykes han hecho un gran esfuerzo en conjuntar un programa que abarca todos los aspectos de la cirugía plástica y reconstructiva facial y que incluye una distinguida lista de profesores de todas partes del mundo.

Dr. Robert Simons and the 50th Anniversary Committee have worked hard to have a special surprise for everyone that I am indeed looking forward to. This will be a great week, in a great city with a great group of our colleagues from around the world. Please help yourself to her hospitality.

As president of the IFFPSS, I invite you to attend the ceremony of the Efrain Davalos Award, and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the AAFPRS, as well as the numerous social events that will be part of the program.

50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) will celebrate its 50th Anniversary at this meeting. Big surprises are in store for all meeting attendees, members and nonmembers alike. The 11th International Symposium is sponsored by the AAFPRS Foundation and the IFFPSS.

ABOUT THE AAFPRS AND ITS FOUNDATION The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) was founded in 1964 and represents more than 2,500 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons throughout the world. The AAFPRS is a National Medical Specialty Society of the American Medical Association (AMA). The AAFPRS holds an official seat in the AMA House of Delegates and on the American College of Surgeons board of governors. The majority of AAFPRS members and fellows are certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, which includes examination in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures, and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Other AAFPRS members are surgeons certified in ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and dermatology. In 1974, the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS Foundation) was created to address the medical and scientific issues and challenges which confront facial plastic surgeons. The AAFPRS Foundation established a proactive research program and educational resources for leaders in facial plastic surgery. Through courses, workshops, and other scientific presentations, as well as a highly respected fellowship training program, the AAFPRS Foundation has consistently provided quality educational programs for the dissemination of knowledge and information among facial plastic surgeons. In the early 1990s, FACE TO FACE humanitarian programs were established so that AAFPRS members could use their skills and share their talent in helping the less fortunate individuals here and abroad. • FACE TO FACE: International brings AAFPRS members to third world countries where they treat children with facial birth defects and anomalies. • FACE TO FACE: The National Domestic Violence Project allows AAFPRS members to perform surgeries on survivors of domestic abuse here in the United States, who have received injuries to their faces. • The newest member to FACE TO FACE is FACES OF HONOR. This program offers free surgical care for soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty.

EFRAIN DAVALOS AWARD The Efrain Davalos Award award is given every four or five years to a physician outside of the U.S. and Canada who has made significant contributions to facial plastic surgery. At this 11th International Symposium, the distinguished award will be given to Joao Maniglia, MD, from Brazil. He was the Brazilian representative at the IFFPSS from 2000 to 2010 where he significantly helped in making the presence of facial plastic surgery in Brazil stronger. He has been a stalwart contributor through his work in the Federation. Dr. Maniglia will be recognized on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:30am, TRAIN 1, Broadway Ballroom.

ABOUT THE IFFPSS The International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies (IFFPSS) is a group of societies of facial plastic surgeons from various countries around the world. This Federation was formed in 1997 after extensive discussions initiated by the AAFPRS. The member societies of the IFFPSS are: O American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery OASEAN Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery OAustralasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery OBrazilian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery OCanadian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery OColombian Society of Facial Plastic Surgery and Rhinology OEcuadorian Society of Rhinology and Facial Surgery OEuropean Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery OKorean Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery OMexican Society of Rhinology and Facial Surgery OPan Asia Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery OTaiwan Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery OVenezuelan Society of Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery The Federation continues to serve its goal of improving communication and cooperation among all of our societies for many educational programs and other programs that benefit patients. The most important aspect of the history and future of the Federation, however, are the many relationships developed and our ability to improve the quality of facial plastic surgery around the globe.

EVALUATION AND CME CREDITS

MEETING FORMAT

With the launch of the AAFPRS Foundation’s LEARN (Lifelong Educational and Research Network) in 2013, we now have the capability of capturing meeting evaluation responses and award CME credits to participants on line at www.aafprs-learn.org.

This year’s symposium is different from the past--it offers a different format and features more talks and lectures, labs, and workshops. Each day has different “trains” with different schedules. Make sure you pay attention to the daily schedule. There are panels and lectures happening in one “train” while there are instruction courses and free papers happening concurrently. This allows you to pick and choose as you please and not be tied down to one room. Take note that there are three half-day labs on Thursday and two-half day labs on Friday and there is an additional fee to attend the labs. The Exhibit Hall will be open from 9:00am to 6:00pm daily and with varying breaks and lunches, you will be able to access the hall at all times.

ACCREDITATION/CREDIT DESIGNATION

Please note that in order to access your personal LEARN account, you will need to know your AAFPRS log on ID and password. If you do not know your current AAFPRS ID and password, please visit Karen Sloat in the registration area and she will provide you with the necessary information to complete your evaluation and claim your CME Credits. Knowing this information ahead of time will avoid delay in obtaining your credits on-site. There is a Tutorial on the LEARN home page that will describe the various aspects of the site and how each can assist you in building your personal educational experience. Don’t wait; visit the LEARN site today at: http://www.cecity.com/aafprs/2013/tutorial/player.html.

The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor, in Manhattan, New York City. The statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886, was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.
