Take advantage of a Free Home Fire Safety Check (HFSC) - The Service offer a free HFSC which includes the free installation of smoke alarms. Call 0800 169 1234

2.

Christmas tree lights - check they conform to the British Standard and always use a residual current device on outdoor electrical equipment.

3.

Sockets - don’t overload them by ensuring only one plug per socket. Always turn off plugs when not in use.

4.

Escape Plan - make sure you have an escape plan for your family. Keep all escape routes clear.

5.

Cooking - most fires start in the Kitchen. Never leave cooking unattended and avoid cooking when under the influence of alcohol.

6.

Smoke alarms - ensure you have working smoke alarms installed on all levels of your home. Test your smoke alarms weekly and never remove the batteries.

7.

Candles - keep candles, lighters and matches out of reach of children. Never leave burning candles unattended.

8.

Elders & Neighbours - Take the time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours. Call 0800 169 1234 to arrange a free Home Fire Safety Check for a friend or relative.

9.

Smoking - Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished. Smoking materials are the greatest cause of fire related fatalities.

10.

Decorations - don’t attach them to lights or hang them near heaters or fires, as they can quickly catch fire. Ensure Christmas trees are not positioned too close to fires.

11.

Chimneys - make sure your chimney and stove flues are cleaned professionally.

12.

In the event of a fire - GET OUT, STAY OUT and call 999.
