Our Calvary Family is pleased to WELCOME you to our Celebration of the Season of Pentecost. Thank you for joining us in our joyous celebration of love, life, service and fellowship demonstrated to us by our Master and Savior Jesus Christ and carried by us throughout the year! On Sundays, we normally have two distinct liturgies (services). Both include the Eucharist (Communion). During Lent, our 8 AM Sunday Service celebrates the Eucharist with the words of our traditional Rite I liturgy from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. The 10:15 AM Service uses the more contemporary language of our Rite II Liturgy. Additionally: * The 8:00 AM liturgy is celebrated, usually without music. * The 10:15 AM liturgy is a sung Eucharist. During the Season of Pentecost, both Sunday services follow the Rite II Liturgy. For your information and convenience, nursery care is available during the 10:15 AM Service as well as Sunday School for children and youth. We encourage you and your family to try each service to see what fits you best. At Calvary, everyone celebrates the Eucharist, and we pray that these worship experiences will be a wonderful way to connect all parishioners regardless of age. We strive to build a community where all feel a sense of hope and compassion from a church that welcomes all of God’s children. Please complete a visitor’s card found in the pew rack and place it in the collection tray. We invite you to join us following the service for coffee and fellowship in the meeting rooms in the south end of the Education Wing.

The Rev. Michael D. Rasicci, Rector 222 South Batavia Avenue, Batavia, Illinois 60510-2564 (630) 879-3378 [email protected] www.calvaryepiscopalbatavia.church 3

INFORMATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Nursery Care: Nursery Care is available for infants and toddlers during the 10:15 AM Sunday Service. Youth Christian Education: Youth Christian Education begins at 10:00 AM on Sunday. Our program provides the foundation for a life guided by Christ, emphasizing “love thy neighbor” and service to others. The program is focused on building new relationships and emphasizing that church is fun, and that God loves everyone, without exception. Here, we invite all children and families into our ministry. At Calvary, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve God by teaching and forming the next ambassadors of the church. You are always welcome; please join us! First Holy Communion: Youth participation in preparation for their first Holy Communion is coordinated by the Director of Youth Christian Education. Adults should contact the Rector. Confirmation: Youth Confirmation is coordinated by the Director of Youth Christian Education. Confirmation for adults requires participation in Confirmation Classes scheduled in the Spring.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Our Responsibility: What better evidence exists to prove the Grace and Love of our Lord, Jesus Christ than the childhood development of our children? At Calvary, we take that responsibility very cheerfully, yet extremely seriously. Our Director of Youth Christian Ed, Adam McCluskey is a graduate of the General Theological Seminary in New York and completed his studies as a Seminarian at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church in New York City. Adam is well trained for his role. The entire staff at Calvary as well as those volunteers directly responsible for your son or daughter’s Christian Education are subject to a background investigation and must complete the Keeping God’s Children Safe Program. Your child’s safety is as important to us as is his or her Christian Education. Your active participation is not only welcome but is essential to your child’s Christian development! 4

When he could have asked God for power or riches, King Solomon instead asks God to give him an understanding mind with which to govern God’s people.

First Lesson

1 Kings 2: 10-12; 3: 3-14 LEM: A Reading from the Second Book of Kings

David slept with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So, Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I should give you." And Solomon said, "You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?" It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, "Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is 10

right, I now do according to your word. Indeed, I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life." LEM: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm

Psalm 111

Please read the Psalm responsively, dividing at the asterisk

Please chant the Psalm to the following tone

1

Hallelujah!

2

Great are the deeds of the LORD! * they are studied by all who delight in them.

3

His work is full of majesty and splendor, * and his righteousness endures for ever.

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.

11

4

He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.

5

He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant.

6

He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations.

7

The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure.

8

They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity.

He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant for ever; * holy and awesome is his Name. 9

10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; * those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures for ever. Christ’s followers are urged to act wisely, giving thanks to God for his goodness and living according to God’s will.

Second Lesson

Ephesians 5:15-20 Reader: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians:

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So, do not be foolish, but 12

understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

The Holy Gospel

John 6: 51-58 Priest: +The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Priest: Jesus said, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So, Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father

13

sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever." Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Gospel Acclamation

Homily – Fr. Rasicci Profession of Faith Priest: Let us profess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed. All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. 14

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People Priest: Living Father, Holy Wisdom, you have come to us in Jesus as the living bread given for the life of the world: Accept our prayers on behalf of the whole human family, that all may abide in you, and live and walk in 15

your ways, as we pray: Feed your creation with your eternal life; may Christ abide in us. LEM: Nurture your Church, O God, with the food and drink of eternal life as we celebrate our Eucharist on this feast day of Christ’s resurrection; Fill us with your Spirit as we sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. [pause for silent prayer]

Feed your creation with your eternal life. People: May Christ abide in us. LEM: Guide the leaders of our nation and all who wield power and authority in the world, that they may have wisdom and understanding to discern between good and evil. [pause for silent prayer]

Feed your creation with your eternal life. People: May Christ abide in us. LEM: Be the bread of life for those who lack and suffer hunger throughout the world, that all who suffer may know the nourishment of your love. [pause for silent prayer]

Feed your creation with your eternal life. People: May Christ abide in us. LEM: Invite our community to the banquet of your divine life, where we may know the works of your hands, which are faithfulness and justice, full of majesty and splendor. [pause for silent prayer]

Feed your creation with your eternal life. 16

People: May Christ abide in us. LEM: Let your nurturing life renew and strengthen those for whom we pray, especially for those members of the United States Armed Forces and NATO Forces and civilians affected by the fighting in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, the Sudan and other areas of armed conflict and those affected by civil strife in Nicaragua and Venezuela; those whose names are inscribed on the Intercessory Prayer List, in the Intention Books, or in this week’s bulletin, and those you may wish to add now. [please add names either aloud or in silence]

We thank you for the living bread that came down from heaven; hear our prayers of gratitude, especially for the United Church of South India, its Moderator, Bishops, Clergy and Faithful; Congregations in the Waukegan Deanery: Trinity, Highland Park; Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest; Holy Family, Lake Villa; St. Lawrence, Libertyville and St. Paul McHenry. For those who have finished and for those who are about to begin the Julian Year Program. For our Companion Dioceses of Southeast Mexico and Renk, South Sudan. For those celebrating birthdays this week: Jim Asay, Jr., Haley VanDuyn, Erik Turner and Erich Keime. Are there any others? [pause] For those celebrating Anniversaries this week: Sue and Fred Bauernschmidt and Christy and Mike Moran. Are there any others? [pause] May all who have died abide in you and rejoice at the banquet of your heavenly feast especially Robert Napierkowski and those whose names you would like to mention now: [pause for additional names and silent prayer] Feed your creation with your eternal life. People: May Christ abide in us. 17

Priest: Generous God, you call all people into your banquet to eat and drink of the true food and true drink that you give for the life of the world: Bless our celebration with the power of your presence, that we may grow in wisdom and faithfulness, through Jesus Christ our Savior. People: Amen.

Prayer for the Mission of Our Parish [The Prayer for Mission may be found inside the front cover of the bulletin]

Confession of Sin Priest: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. [Pause for silent examination of our consciences and to ask forgiveness]

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

18

Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. All: Amen.

The Peace Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And also with you.

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Priest: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. 19

Commented [DE1]:

Priest: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. People: Glory to you forever and ever. Priest: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. People: By your will they were created and have their being. Priest: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight Priest: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. All: By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. 20

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel

Priest: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” [The Acolyte strikes the chime to remind us of Christ’s presence under the form of bread]

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you 21

and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” [The Acolyte strikes the chime to remind us of Christ’s presence under the form of wine]

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, All: We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. All: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. All: AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 22

The Breaking of the Bread Priest: People:

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

VBS/Sunday Youth Days Our Sunday Service Days began with a great start this past Sunday! Youth from ages 1 to 16 enjoyed learning about the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000. We had great discussions about people in communities around the world who do not have the money to eat regularly. We related to our neighbors by talking about what we feel like when we are hungry or in need, and we talked about how we can feed the hungry like Jesus did. We accomplished this by making 47 (!) sack lunches for the guests of Lazarus House, a St. Charles homeless shelter, complete with decorated lunch sacks. A fun and fulfilling time was had by all! Join us this coming Sunday following the 10:15 service for the second installment of Sunday Service Days, and join in on the fun, fellowship, and philanthropy! For more information or to sign up, please contact the church office.

31

Please hold these people in your daily prayers. We also ask that you pray for the forgotten, the poor and the oppressed.

Loose cash placed in the collection plate is provided to the general fund. Every 3rd Sunday, the Open Plate Collection (meaning loose cash) placed in the plate is directed automatically to the Rector's Discretionary Fund. During a special Red Bowl Collection (generally occurring on the 4th Sunday of the month), all gifts (checks and cash) are provided to the announced charity which is listed in the bulletin. And, as always, thank you for your generous financial support!

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL CALVARY PARISHIONERSThe Calvary Cook Book Committee is soliciting photographs showing how people in the 21st Century prepare meals. Specifically, the Committee asks for you to submit a photograph of you and members of your family preparing meals. If you are the only member of your family and you submit a photo, you will have fulfilled the requirement. If your family is blended, short, tall or however you would define it, your photo will be welcome. (Our first ever cook book cover showed a drawing made by Dave Sperry’s Mom of a woman preparing a meal in a kitchen.) The Cook Book Committee wants to stick with that theme but update for this Millennium. Please make your submission by September 2nd. We will vote on the cover picture at the Annual Picnic. All photos will be included within the Cook Book. However, the Cook Book Committee reserves the right to exclude photos determined to be inappropriate or in poor taste. The following photo is an example of inappropriate. Good Luck!
