The purpose of CPPD Day is to foster collaboration between faculty interested in quality improvement (QI) and those interested in continuing professional development (CPD). We hope to foster collaboration to meet the shared goal of improving patient care. Course Goals

Presentation Objectives and Faculty Profiles A Checklist for Checklists: Quality and Safety Tools

Upon completion of session, participants will be able to: 1) To develop self-assessment skills in identifying opportunities for quality and safety improvement 2) To become familiar with quality improvement and selectively apply quality and safety improvement interventions in psychiatric practice 3) To improve risk-management approaches to common areas of exposure in psychiatric practice Jared Peck, MD, FRCPC is a psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is the Associate Head of the Ambulatory Psychiatry program and Head of the CBT program. He is faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto in the Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems and Psychotherapies, Humanities and Educational Scholarship divisions. Dr. Peck leads the manager curriculum for residents in the department of psychiatry and coordinates the quality and safety curriculum. He has presented at the American Psychiatric Association and Canadian Psychiatric Association Annual meetings on Quality Improvement. He is currently enrolled in the IDEAS Advanced Learning Program in Quality Improvement. Lesley Wiesenfeld, MD, FRCPC is the Deputy-Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Clinically, she leads the Geriatric Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Wiesenfeld's academic activities include leadership in residency education with focus on resident safety, resident evaluation, resident selection and the manager/quality improvement curriculum. She also participates in a variety of quality improvement and quality assurance activities in hospital, teaching and professional association settings. Her work on the Safe Patients/Safe Staff strategy at Mount Sinai Hospital was recently awarded the 2015 Healthcare Safety Award by the Canadian College of Health Leaders. The Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) Model – Innovation in CPD and Improving Quality of Patient Care Allison Crawford, MD, FRCPC is Co-Chair of ECHO Ontario Mental Health, and the Director of the Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program and Telepsychiatry at CAMH. She is a psychiatrist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. ECHO Ontario Mental Health at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the University of Toronto engages psychiatrists and interprofessional learners at primary care sites across Ontario to form a community of practice. The presentation will describe the ECHO initiative, with a focus on learning mechanisms and related quality improvement. Good Things Come in 3s – Maximizing Section 3 Opportunities in CPPD Andrea Waddell, MEd, MD, FRCPC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Education lead for the Division of Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems. Her area of expertise is in assessment and she has been involved in the use of performance-based learning and assessment programs in undergraduate, postgraduate and CPPD learner. She provides direct clinical teaching and supervision to numerous undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees and provides support to the Department's Education leads in the area of assessment and evaluation. Dr. Waddell completed a fellowship at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education and a Master's Degree in Education at OISE/UT. In addition to being active in medical education, Dr. Waddell is the Medical Director of the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at the University Health Network. The Patient as Educator: Toward Equal Partnerships Lisa Walter, BFA, is an artist and educator. She has worked in the arts professionally throughout her life as an actor, playwright, and visual artist. In 2015, Lisa was a keynote speaker at the Thompson Centre’s annual OCD conference in Toronto, and she co-presented a workshop on ACT for OCD at the International OCD Conference in Boston. She has taught mental healthcare professionals at CAMH, University Health Network, U of T Faculty of Medicine, and the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre. Lisa has also presented audiovisual presentations about her artwork, and creativity and mental illness, at numerous universities and art galleries across Southern Ontario. Carmen Wiebe, MD, FRCPC is a staff psychiatrist in the Borderline Personality Disorder Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She offers individual therapy, group skills training and medication management within the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy programme. She coordinates University of Toronto psychiatry resident exposure to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. She also teaches extensively on BPD and DBT, and has received several teaching awards for DBT courses, including the CPA-COPCE Award for the Most Outstanding Continuing Education Activity in Psychiatry in Canada. In 2013 she received the Junior Faculty Development Award from the Association for Academic Psychiatry. IDEAS: CPD Through Applied QI Training Tara Burra, MD, FRCPC, is the service head for Adult Ambulatory and Aftercare at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. She completed the IDEAS training program in spring 2014 and continues to co-lead the Ambulatory Quality Improvement team at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

Jose Silveira, MD, FRCPC Medical Director of the Mental Health and Addiction Programs and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. Dr. Silveira has guided the reorganization of the continuum of psychiatric services to improve integration throughout the patients’ journey from the front door to the community using QI principles. He is currently in cohort 8 of the IDEAS program. Outcomes-Based CPD: Bridging the Know Do and Do Better Gap Upon completion of session, participants will be able to: 1) Discuss features of outcomes based education in CPD 2) Reflect on a model of Implementation and QI and the role of CPD 3) Appreciate the challenges in outcomes based CPD Peter Selby, MMBS, CCFP, FCFP, MHSc, DipABAM is the Director of Medical Education and a Clinician-Scientist the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He is a Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. He is also a Clinician-Scientist in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Selby is the executive director and creator of the TEACH project – a continuing education certificate program in Applied Counselling for Health with a focus on smoking cessation, through the University of Toronto. Developing Continuing Education and Professional Development Programs to Change Practice Upon completion of session, participants will be able to: 1) Apply process and practice improvement into continuing education initiatives and consider the role of the patient in achieving change 2) Identify useful frameworks, barriers and solutions to integrating practice change into continuing education psychiatric teaching settings. 3) Reflect on their existing continuing education activities and how they can integrate practice improvement. Ivan Silver, MD, MEd, FRCPC joined the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in December 2011 as its' first Vice President of Education. Dr. Silver is a full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, and a practicing psychiatrist at CAMH where his focus is geriatric psychiatry. As the Vice-President of Education at CAMH, he is dedicated to interprofessional collaboration and related education, work-based learning including simulation and e-learning, enriching access to information for everyone at CAMH, linking education to clinical care, outcomes based education, enhancing education scholarship and innovation at CAMH, patient and family education, faculty development and linking health professional education to the principles of knowledge translation, quality and patient safety. Sanjeev Sockalingam, MD, FRCPCP is the Deputy Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Centre for Mental Health and practices in the Medical Psychiatry Program at the University Health Network. He is also the Director of the Toronto Western Hospital Bariatric Surgery Psychosocial Program. At the University of Toronto, Dr. Sockalingam is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and the Director of Continuing Practice and Professional Development. In this role, he is focused on the interface of continuing professional development and quality improvement to enhance psychiatric care and patient outcomes. He is also the Undergraduate Faculty Lead and Director of Curriculum Renewal for the Medical Psychiatry Alliance. Planning Committee
