Mill MillRoad RoadWinter WinterFair Fair2016 2017 3 3 Welcome

Elliot Harris Chair, Mill Road Winter Fair

As we come to the end of 2017, we’ve got a bit of the old and a bit of the new for you this year. Walking up and down Mill Road you’ll see many of your favourite stalls and entertainment for the whole family, including a line-up of live street performances, arts and crafts, exhibitions, and a range of children’s activities, together with an amazing variety of international and local foods and open days by community groups and faith centres. Even as we carry on everything that makes the Winter Fair so much fun, we’ve also got some surprises for you. Many of these

can be found at the East Road end of the Fair, where you’ll notice that we’ve added all sorts of activities on Petersfield Green opposite Donkey Common. If you pass through these (after stopping to enjoy them!), you’ll find yourself discovering the new activities at Anglia Ruskin University, which is opening its doors to add even more fun to the Winter Fair. This is my first year as Chair of the committee of volunteers who work so hard to put the Winter Fair on, following several years of hard work and leadership from Andrew Phillips, the previous Chair. I’d like to thank Andrew for all of his hard work (and for continuing to produce this brilliant brochure!). I’d also like to thank all of the committee members, volunteers, partners, donors, local residents, Friends of Mill Road Winter Fair and everyone else who makes this wonderful event happen. I’ve worked on a number of festivals over the years and I can honestly say that I’ve

never known one to be so closely linked to the local community where it takes place. Mill Road is a unique place and it deserves to be celebrated. This is your Winter Fair, so I hope you have a great (and warm!) time and maybe even join the MRWF family and get involved, whether at this year’s Fair or in the new year as we begin to plan the next one.

Mill Road Winter Fair 2017 From our Sponsor

The Mill Road Winter Fair 2017 My firm and I are, once again, proud to be the main sponsor for this year’s event and I hope all the hard work from the Committee and volunteers will produce another record breaking fair that everyone who attends will enjoy. The Mill Road area of the City has had an exciting year with new traders starting and residential developments nearing completion, all proving the location is still in high demand for traders, buyers and tenants. The market has changed and prices are static which will help with affordability. We have seen a notable increase in demand from London buyers in most price ranges as they are relocating to the City for work. The economic environment that we are working in now has some uncertainty. The fundamentals are low interest rates, near full employment, and the City having one of the highest GDP’s in the country. With large amounts of investment in the Cambridge area, I believe the future looks positive. Property is still a sound investment especially in the Mill Road area. The supply is constant and access to the railway station, local

schooling, shopping and community activities are all excellent. We sponsored the Ridgefield PTA summer fair and were able to raise just over £1000 towards infrastructure projects in the School. The teams at Bush Sales and Bush Lettings are approachable, caring professionals whose knowledge and advice is second to none in the area. Therefore, the advice we give is realistic and achievable. When you are looking to sell, buy, let or rent we are always happy to help. I hope we all enjoy the Mill Road Winter Fair this year and I thank everyone involved in making the City’s premier event a huge success.

A message from Shapour Meftah, Chair of the Mill Road Traders’ Association I’ve been a trader for more than twenty years now… and I don’t take any of it for granted. Most mornings I still wake up and look forward to facing all the opportunities and challenges the day may bring, although that’s not to say that some days aren’t more difficult than others, and meeting obligations and responsibilities isn’t always easy. I know we are still facing legal issues which have been, and continue to be, troublesome and expensive, but by uniting and facing these challenges together, I hope the experience will end in positive result for us all. Policing our shops and ensuring a secure and safe environment for visitors is essential, and remains a priority.  Being a trader can sometimes be stressful and lonely. However, it is my privilege to communicate with so many smart and determined people from all walks of life. Another year draws to a close – and quite a year it has been! Whether Brexit and the election of Donald Trump filled you with hope or despair, those events are behind us now and our efforts have got to centre on doing our best for the future. Not to engage with the new order is simply ‘not an option’, as the saying goes. Change is always a challenge and the changes we face are on a monumental scale. I take this opportunity to wish you all a very restful and revitalising New Year.
