♦ ♦ ♦ 20th Anniversary Edition: February 2010 ♦ ♦ ♦ Elliot Scientific is now offering the Ethernal SlowLight ultra-narrow (200 Hz) linewidth 1064 nm and 1550 nm fibre lasers in powers up to 200 mW after signing a distribution agreement with Orbits Lightwave of California. This range will be significantly extended with lasers having powers up to 10 W later this year. The systems are housed in hermetically-sealed athermal modules that minimise frequency drift with respect to temperature and dispense with the need for energy consuming temperature control. This novel packaging technology also greatly reduces susceptibility to shock and vibration by five orders of magnitude. Orbits Lightwave's breakthrough technology, the virtual ring laser oscillator, enables travelling wave and slow light oscillation in a compact, linear, all-fibre cavity to realise higher power, ultra low FM and AM noise performance, and a higher sidemode suppression ratio. It also effectively increases the cavity lifetime. For more information on this advanced range of fibre lasers, please visit the new Orbits Lightwave product page or email [email protected].

HOLOEYE's PLUTO Spatial Light Modulator enters a new phase HOLOEYE's PLUTO phase-only spatial light modulators (SLM) are based on reflective LCOS microdisplays with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and are optimized to provide a phase modulation up to and above 2pi out to 1550 nm. Packaged in a very small housing to ensure easy integration into optical setups and applications the PLUTO phase modulator series is offered in 4 versions optimized for the following wavelength ranges:

• • • •

PLUTO-VIS 420 ~ 850 nm Broadband anti-reflection coated PLUTO-NIR 850 ~ 1100 nm AR coated for 1064 nm plus thicker LC layer to guarantee a phase modulation of over 2pi still at 1064 nm PLUTO-NIR-2 750 ~ 950 nm Developed after interest from the femtosecond laser and biophotonics communities PLUTO-TELCO 1550 nm Version optimized for common telecommunication ranges up to 1550 nm

PLUTO SLMs have a reflectivity of about 60% and diffraction efficiencies of more than 80%, so a total light efficiency of > 50% per addressable diffractive device is possible. Operating PLUTO is easy - as with all HOLOEYE SLMs, a quality graphics card is used to send HDTV resolution images at a 60 Hz frame rate to the device via DVI. The PLUTO panel is then simply treated as an external monitor. If you would like to find out more about spatial light modulation, visit our HOLOEYE pages or email our Sales Team.

Optical Force Microscopy gets boost from Elliot Scientific E4100 QPD System Elliot Scientific is now shipping production versions of the successfully field-proven E4100 QPD to allow researchers to measure optical trapping forces. By imaging an interference pattern onto a quadrant photodetector (QPD) and utilising dedicated software, an operator can monitor the position of a trapped particle with nanometer resolution. The measurement software also allows the user to calibrate the motion of a single trapped object and thus makes it possible to calculate the forces exerted — this makes optical tweezing particularly attractive for a growing number of scientists probing bio-mechanical systems. Several different configurations to match possible user requirements are available within the E4100 range. Elliot Scientific can supply a complete Force Measurement Optical Tweezer plug'n'play system, or this capability can be added to an existing tweezer installation. Retrofitting to a good quality microscope is also a viable alternative if there are budget limitations. Multiple QPDs and/or an auxiliary probe beam are among a number of other options also on offer. For more information on this and our other trapping system, visit our tweezer pages or email our Sales Team.

Zero-Order Waveplates at Multiple-Order Prices Elliot Scientific waveplates are at prices comparable to ordinary multiple-order waveplates but are far superior in temperature stability and wavelength tolerance. Due to these performance advantages, we only offer zero-order waveplates in all the standard wavelengths and sizes as there is no reason to design-in multiple-order waveplates ever again! The zero-order waveplates are manufactured using a proprietary technique for permanently bonding optically contacted surfaces to produce components that are stable and physically robust, with no adhesives or other materials introduced at the coated surface. The result is the damage threshold of an optically contacted interface with the mechanical strength of a solid component. Thermal matching is maintained, allowing component use over a wide temperature range. For more information on these and our other fast delivery optical components, visit our Optics Pages or email our Optics Sales Team.
