Interim Head Coach Bart Sullivan After the passing of Coach Jack McGetrick, the only coach in the program’s history, Bellarmine University entrusted Bart Sullivan to continue the program. Sullivan has been an assistant under McGetrick during the past two seasons that saw improved

play on the field. After a 9-9 season in 2009, the Knights came back with a 9-6 record, the best since moving to a full D-I schedule. A career that started at DublinCoffman High School in his hometown of Dublin, Ohio, Sullivan was a standout member at the University of Denver from 2003-2006. Playing in 59 games and starting the final 31 games of his career on defense while helping the Pioneers to three Great Western Lacrosse League Championships including the school’s first outright title in 2006. In his senior season, Sullivan was named team captain and went on to help Denver to a NCAA tournament birth. As a junior he was named the team’s Defensive MVP and was a member of 2005 Face-Off Classic All-Tournament team. Prior to coming to Bellarmine, Sullivan had coaching stops at Denison University in 2007 and at his alma mater, the University of Denver, in 2008. As an assistant

at Denison, he helped the Big Red to an 11-4 record and an appearance in the Div-III NCAA tournament, the 15th appearance in the program’s history. After just one season at Denison, Sullivan went back to Denver to help coach the Pioneers to a 10-7 record and another birth into the GWLL tournament. The Pioneers went on to compete in the NCAA tournament for the second time in the school’s history. At Denver, Sullivan coached faceoffs and a defense that held opponents to just 9.9 goals per game. Sullivan graduated from the University of Denver in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts of in mathematics and is currently working toward his MBA from Bellarmine’s W. Fielding Rubel School of Business. Sullivan currently lives in Louisville with his wife, Terin, and they are expecting their first child in September.

Assistant Coach Bill Gleason Bill Gleason is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Bellarmine University Lacrosse team. Prior to coaching at Bellarmine, Gleason coached at his alma mater, West Genesee High School in Syracuse, New York. Gleason has been a part of a winning tradition dating back to his days at West Genesee, where he helped the program to back to back New York State Championships in 2002 and 2003. During his time at West Genesee he played under legendary lacrosse coaches Mike Messere and Bob Deegan. After graduating from West Genesee in 2003, Gleaseon went on to play for SUNYCortland. During his time there, Gleason and the Red Dragons went on to the NCAA Div-III National Championships three times. In 2006 SUNY-Cortland won the school’s first National Championship, defeating No. 1 knights 2011

Salisbury 13-12 in overtime. While getting to play in multiple National Championship games, Gleason was also fortunate to play under three separate and influential head coaches during his career including Lelan Rogers (Syracuse University), Rich Barnes (Ithaca College), and Steve Beville (SUNY-Cortland). All coaches provided a very diverse yet effective coaching style and philosophy that Gleason brings to Bellarmine’s program. Academically, Gleason achieved a Bachelors of Science in Financial Management with a minor in Computer Applications. He is currently working on his master’s in business administration at Bellarmine and currently resides in Louisville, Ky.

JACK McGETRICK Jack McGetrick, the founding coach of the Bellarmine lacrosse program, died in October after a long and courageous battle with cancer. “Black Jack,” as he was known to his players, came to Bellarmine in 2004 to get the program off the ground, and the Knights started competing at the NCAA Division I level in 2005. In his six years with Bellarmine, the Knights posted a 45-41 record, ending with a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory at Ohio State on May 1, 2010. McGetrick was known as a fierce competitor throughout his career, and continued to compete even after being diagnosed with cancer in 2008. McGetrick never missed a game or a practice despite enduring harsh chemotherapy. Before coming to Bellarmine, he spent 11 seasons as coach of the University of Hartford, where he posted an overall record of 87-74 (the most wins and best winning percentage of any coach in Hartford’s history), and was recognized as the national coach of the year in 1997. McGetrick’s career collegiate coaching record is 132-115, which ranks among the top 50 of all time.

2011 Season preview

The theme for the 2011 Bellarmine University lacrosse team will be one of strength and perseverance. After the death of Coach Jack McGetrick, the only coach in the young program’s history, Bart Sullivan takes over as interim Head Coach and looks to replace a talented group of seniors from last year’s team including Chase Williams, Derek Hopcroft, and Jarrett Davis, who were all drafted into the National Lacrosse League. Bellarmine is coming off one of their best seasons, finishing 2010 with a 9-6 record. The mark is the best since moving to a full Division I schedule. The season ended with on an uptick as the Knights upended Ohio State in in dramatic fashion, besting the Buckeyes 14-13 in overtime at Ohio State. The team also saw success individually as Chase Williams was named Inside Lacrosse’s National Player of the Week after getting four goals and three assists against Robert Morris. To fill the void left by the departing seniors, Sullivan could turn to junior Austin Bright, who is the team’s leading scorer after getting 12 goals and five assists last season, to make up the lost production. Junior Luke Acton also returns to his attack position after playing in all 15 games last season.

knights 2011

The midfield is full of players who look to expand their roles from last season. Juniors Trevor Timmerberg and Colton Clark will see plenty of action this season. While the offense will see plenty of new faces, the defense returns some of their stalwarts. Ross Doan, Drew Soeder, and Austin Powell all return after starting every game last season. The strength of Bellarmine’s team could well be between the pipes as the Knights return two solid goalies in senior Scott Bowles and sophomore Dillon Ward. Last year, the players split time and were very effective. Bellarmine will get challenged early and often during the 2011 season. After opening the season with two games at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium against Detroit on February 12 and Mercer on February 19, the Knights will go on a five game road trip as they take on Delaware, No. 14 Lloyola; which opens up ECAC play; No. 6 Maryland, Harvard, and Hartford. The rest of the home games consist of Virginia Military Institute on March 16, Air Force Academy on April 9, University of Denver on April 23, and the season finale against Ohio State on April 30.

Owsley B. Frazier Stadium In August of 2007, Bellarmine unveiled the $5.1 million Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, which includes Joseph P. and Janet A. Clayton Field, to the public. The new home for Bellarmine lacrosse took approximately 18 months to build and has several outstanding features including: Artificial Turf – The artificial turf product, called “24/7,” was produced and installed by the Motz Group and is the same turf currently used by the Miami Dolphins and University of Kentucky football team. It has permanent markings for lacrosse, soccer and field hockey and has an exceptional drainage system to allow for extensive play in all conditions. Lighting – Lighting has been installed at the field to allow for night play. The Musco Lighting system features redirected lighting which bends spill lighting back on to the field, drastically reducing the amount of illumination falling outside the stadium’s perimeter. Musco Lighting has installed lights at some of the nation’s premier sports facilities including Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers), Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers), Qwest Field (Seattle Seahawks), and Daytona International Speedway. Capacity – Chairback bench seating is available for approximately 2,000 spectators. Press Box – The fully enclosed press box features climate control, seating for 24 people, and data ports for internet access. Track Surface – The track is an eight-lane, 400-meter track, featuring three long jump pits, two pole vault areas, a high jump pit, and a steeplechase water jump pit. The surface is a dual-durometer, polyurethane poured surface provided by Beynon Sport Surfaces, the same company which has installed tracks at other top college facilities over the past three years including Auburn, Illinois, Louisiana State, North Carolina, Oregon, and Wisconsin. The stadium also has a scoreboard with scrolling message center, concession stand, public address system, officials’ locker rooms, storage areas, and public restrooms. knights 2011

Owsley B. Frazier Stadium In the fall of 2007, Bellarmine dedicated the $5.1 million Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on the school’s campus, just off of Newburg Road. This state-of-the-art facility is now the home of Bellarmine’s soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and track teams. The artificial field surface, called the Joseph P. and Janet A. Clayton Field, was installed by the Motz Group and is the same “24/7” product as can be found at the football fields used by the Miami Dolphins and the University of Kentucky. The track facilities include an eight-lane dual-durometer polyurethane poured surface provided by Benyon Sport Surfaces, as well as three long jump pits, two pole vault areas, a high jump pit, and a water steeplechase pit. The field can also be fully lit for night play. It seats approximately 2,000 spectators and has a concession stand and press box facility. Knights Field Bellarmine’s baseball and softball teams each have a home at Knights Field. Both diamonds are natural grass and are located on campus. The baseball field was built in 1954 and has been renovated several times. It now features an elevated press box overlooking home plate as well as covered dugouts, bullpens, a batting cage and a large electronic scoreboard in right field. The field dimensions are 360 feet down the left field line (where the fence is now 20-feet hight), 385 feet to dead center, and 340 feet down the right-field line. The softball field has a full service concession stand located behind home plate as well as covered dugouts and an electronic scoreboard located in left field. The field dimensions are 190 feet down the foul lines and 220 feet to center. Both fields have bleacher seating to accommodate 300 spectators as well as ample hillside grass seating.

Knights Hall Knights Hall is home to Bellarmine basketball and volleyball. Built in 1960, Knights Hall has an atmosphere all its own and can seat up to 2,400 passionate Knight fans in its current configuration. While “retro” in appearance, Knights Hall has plenty of modern amenities. The newly remodeled President’s room, complete with couches and a bar, overlooks the court from the east baseline, while the recently re-painted court includes the BU logo and the NBA charge line. The scorers’ bench features five back-lit tables and a modern sound and public address system. Besides housing all of Bellarmine’s home basketball and volleyball contests, Knights Hall is also used for numerous high school games, graduation ceremonies, and concerts. The Hall was dedicated in 1960 with a home game against the University of Louisville and has since featured some great matchups starting in the ’60s with rival and NAIA national champion Kentucky State, to Fly Williams and his teams from Austin Peay, all the way up to the Knight’s women’s basketball regional championship games of the ’90s. The arena has also hosted some very special guests including Mother Teresa, the Grateful Dead, Jimmy Buffett and Pete Rose among others. In 2007, Knights Hall was featured on ESPN when NBA greats such as Bill Walton, Darrell Griffith, and Kenny “Sky” Walker judged the McDonald’s High School All-American Slam Dunk Contest.

Eddie Weber tennis complex Home to the men’s and women’s tennis teams, the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex features six hard surface courts, which were recently converted from clay. The Knights tennis teams also practice and compete on three indoor courts within the adjacent Sports, Recreation and Fitness facility. knights 2011

Bellarmine University Bellarmine University is a vibrant community of educational excellence and ethical awareness that consistently ranks among the nation’s best colleges and universities. Our students pursue an education based in the liberal arts – and in the distinguished, inclusive Catholic tradition of educational excellence, the oldest and most rewarding in the western world. It is a lifelong education, worthy of the university’s namesake, Saint Robert Bellarmine, and of his invitation to each of us to learn and live in veritatis amore -- in the love of all that is beautiful, true and good in life. BELL-er-mun Bellarmine is growing rapidly, not only with great new campus amenities and academic programs, but also in regional and national prominence. As we grow, more and more people are adding “Bellarmine” to their lists of top schools. Around here, we say “BELLer-mun” in “LOU-a-vuhl.” This is one of the friendliest campuses and places in the world, so we’ll still love you no matter how you pronounce these names. BU is named after Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621), the brilliant Jesuit, who was a Cardinal and who was canonized in 1930. A Campus on the Move Our lush, 135-acre campus currently comprises more than 30 buildings, including the world-class W.L. Lyons Brown Library, the Norton Health Science Center, and halls that are home to the nursing, education, and the arts and sciences. Bellarmine boasts seven residence halls (with an eighth currently under construction), a pristine architectural gem of a chapel, campus center, and university quadrangle. Our recreational facilities include indoor and outdoor tennis courts; fitness center; and athletic fields including a state-of-the-art Frazier Stadium that’s home to lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, and track & field. Our campus on three hills and our award-winning architecture, evoke the beautiful Italian hill towns of Tuscany, birthplace of our patron.
