2012 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

Florence UGANDA

Florence lives in the Soroti District of eastern Uganda, where she suffered prolonged, obstructed labor. Her baby did not survive, and Florence found she had begun to leak urine. It didn’t take long for the entire village to turn against Florence. They felt she was unclean; they shunned her and considered her an outcast. Yet her husband Michael stood by his wife, supporting her and defending her — which soon led the village to turn against him, as well. Florence soon met an outreach worker from TERREWODE, the Association for the Rehabilitation and Re-Orientation of

We are delighted to share with you the Fistula Foundation Annual Report for 2012. This was a tremendous year of growth for us. Thanks to donors like you, our annual revenue grew by more than 40 percent, allowing us to treat more women in more places than ever before. Despite our growing reach, we are driven by the nature of our great challenge. For every woman that we are able to help, there are 50 more like her who remain in need of surgery that can help transform their lives. The need is tremendous and this is a challenge we cannot face alone. We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to work with not only stellar partners in the field, but with a host of organizations and corporations that bring invaluable knowledge, expertise and even funding to the table. We work diligently to put your generous donations to work in the field quickly and effectively, since that is where lives are changed. As you read this report about our recent activities, we hope that you will be inspired by the projects that your donations have funded, the lives you’ve changed and that you will gain greater insight into the principles that guide our work.

Women for Development, a Fistula Foundation partner, who explained that her injury was a curable condition. She was taken

Sincerely,

to the Soroti Regional Hospital, where she underwent successful surgery for her obstetric fistula. Today, Florence is dry and no longer leaking urine.

Carine CAMEROON

One year after her marriage at the age of 15, Carine became pregnant with her first child. Like most women in her village, she went into labor at home. After four excruciating days of labor, her mother took her to a hospital, but by the time they arrived the baby had died and Carine was left with an obstetric fistula. When her husband learned of her incontinence, he left her. For eight long years, Carine suffered with her obstetric fistula.

Driven

Finally, Carine learned about free fistula surgeries funded by Fistula Foundation at a location across the Cameroon border in N’Djamena, Chad, at the Center for Reproductive Health and Fistula Repair. Under their expert care, Carine’s fistula was successfully repaired and today she is living a new life.

Obstetric fistula destroys the lives of women. Most women who develop a fistula do so when trying to give birth to their first child. Without treatment they are too often ostracized and marginalized and are unable to contribute to their families and communities. We are driven to help women receive surgery that can transform their lives. For every woman we help we know there are at least 50 like her who still need care. Lili ANGOLA

Pregnant at 14, Lili’s body was not prepared to give birth. After five days of labor, she lost the baby and began to leak urine and feces. Four years later, she received surgery from the Evangelical Medical Centre of Lubango and finally regained her health.  CEML

SUDAN

For every woman who receives life-transforming treatment, 50 go without. We are committed to reducing this staggering backlog.

Sujata suffered with fistula for 37 years. A widow, she moved between her three children’s homes, but the wives of her sons did not enjoy long visits by their smelly mother-inlaw. Thanks to International Nepal Fellowship, Sujata is finally healed and no longer suffers the embarrassment of her incontinence.

Alradya was 15 when she became pregnant. After two days of obstructed labor, her baby was stillborn and she soon began to leak urine. She found help from Women and Health Alliance International at Dr. Abbo’s Fistula Center in Khartoum and is now healthy once again.

Expanding Access to Treatment We have partnered with TERREWODE (the Association for Re-Orientation and Rehabilitation of Women for Development), one of the few institutions in Uganda supporting routine fistula treatment with regional and national referral hospitals. Our funding is helping to bring treatment to more than 300 women and assisting with the expansion of the organization’s Obstetric Fistula Awareness and Advocacy Network, which has increased patient referrals from local district health centers to larger regional and national hospitals that can provide fistula treatment.

Focused

Putting Obstetric Fistula on the Map The first-ever Global Fistula Map, released by Direct Relief, Fistula Foundation and UNFPA this year, is the single most comprehensive source for understanding worldwide availability of treatment for women living with obstetric fistula. It is a major step forward in helping to understand the global capacity to treat women living with fistula, and will help streamline resource allocation, highlight service gaps, and provide opportunities for further collaboration to ensure women with fistula receive the care they need.

We do one thing and we do it well: treat obstetric fistula. There is a tremendous backlog of women who are in desperate need of care. We are working to reverse this trend by providing our partners in the field with human and financial resources that enable as many women as possible to receive the treatment they need. Increasing the Number of Trained Surgeons Our partner FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) is working to build the field of trained fistula surgeons, and this year began implementing a Train-the-Trainer program that utilizes their recently developed Global Competency-Based Training Manual, the first internationally developed, standardsbased manual of its kind. Fistula Foundation funded the training this year of ten surgeons who originate from countries where fistula is most prevalent.

Doubling Surgical Capacity

“After my operation I was moved to this new and beautiful ward full of light. It makes most of us feel good even if we are in pain. The environment is fresh. Thank you to CCBRT and its partners for making this happen.”

Having suffered with fistula for 12 months, 25-year-old Salha relaxes on her bed as she recovers in the newly constructed Dr. Janis Perialis Fistula Ward at the Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) Disability Hospital in Dar es Salaam. Fistula Foundation funds provided this facility with new mechanical beds, tables, and medical equipment, enabling CCBRT to double its capacity for fistula surgery.

“Fistula Foundation has helped the Edna Adan University Hospital to complete and equip our operating theatres. There are now many women who have been repaired and who are ‘dry’ and able to lead a normal life. This is the greatest gift we can give to the women who have suffered this terrible and humiliating condition that is an obstetric fistula.”

As we work to end the suffering caused by obstetric fistula, nonprofit and corporate partners are a critical piece of our success. These organizations bring invaluable knowledge, expertise and funding to the table, resulting in more women treated and more lives transformed. We work closely with our in-country hospitals and doctors to support targeted solutions that meet local needs. We recognize that our partners in the field know more about their work and their daily challenges than we ever will.

“It is impossible for us to assist every woman suffering from fistula in the DRC, but we also have an obligation to help where we can with funding available. Support from Fistula Foundation allowed us to extend our reach into remote areas of DRC, healing women who would likely still suffer from fistula had the Panzi team not been able to visit and perform fistula repairs through this partnership.”

Denis Mukwege Director and Founder, Panzi Hospital

“The Fistula Foundation has enabled Direct Relief to expand our support for obstetric fistula treatment programs exponentially, from supporting one hospital to 20 hospitals in 14 countries worldwide.”

“WAHA International works to provide fistula care in extremely complex and often politically unstable settings. Your support of WAHA has been crucial, enabling us to deliver care to women who otherwise would have none.”

“Throughout our history, Johnson & Johnson has been committed to the health and well-being of mothers. For nearly a decade we have been a proud partner of Fistula Foundation, helping provide more care to more women with fistula.”

We are proud to be an official maternal mortality partner of the Half the Sky Movement, which brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to raise awareness and empower women worldwide.

In 2012, Fistula Foundation received $100,000 in general operating support from the Google Fund at Tides Foundation. This generous gift allowed us to move more funding into the field, forever changing even more women’s lives.

We are proud to be a partner of UNFPA’s global campaign to improve maternal health and reduce the number of obstetric fistula patients in developing countries.

Nicholas Kristof

For the last decade, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Nicholas Kristof has opened more hearts and minds to the tragedy of obstetric fistula than literally any person ever. Thanks to Kristof, there is a growing, engaged and committed constituency of people who want to help women with fistula receive life-transforming care. Without his consistent and moving writing about obstetric fistula, we believe there would be far fewer women getting care today. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to our shared cause.

Grateful

Carmela Solell-Knepler Fistula Foundation Circle of Friends volunteers are “fistula ambassadors” who work in their communities to raise awareness and funds to help treat obstetric fistula. For the last five years, no supporter has held more Circle of Friends events than Carmela Solell-Knepler, who has worked tirelessly to share information and inspire donations at her church, through theatrical performances and via a number of presentations. We are continuously inspired by her compassion and hard work.

We are deeply grateful to our supporters in the United States and 61 other countries around the world. Because of you, women receive life-transforming treatment. Because of you, thousands of women now lead whole and productive lives. These are women whom you’ve never met, suffering from an injury you’ve likely never encountered – yet, you feel in your heart that you must act to help them. We are grateful for you. Love-A-Sister We are especially grateful to one special group of donors that played a vital role in helping more women receive fistula treatment. A total of 1,035 supporters donated through our Love-A-Sister program this year, contributing $450 each — enough to fund the cost of one fistula surgery. In all, they raised an incredible $314,732, which provided life-transforming surgeries for nearly 700 women.   WAHA International

Amy Oztan

Marymount Manhattan College

Online, she blogs as “Selfish Mom,” but Amy Oztan is anything but. Named by Working Mother as one of the 15 most powerful moms on social media, Amy’s celebrity status landed her an invitation to participate in the “Lose to Win Challenge” by DietBet.com, an online social dieting game that gives players the opportunity to win money through weight loss competitions. Amy competed against six other top bloggers for a $5,000 prize for the charity of their choice. In a remarkable seven-way tie, they all won—and Amy quite unselfishly donated her winnings to Fistula Foundation.

Students at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City performed “Ruined,” a play about the challenges women face in war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Through their performance, cast and crew raised $2,700 for Fistula Foundation Partner Panzi Hospital in DRC. David Mold, Chair of the university’s Division of Fine & Performing Arts, who directed the play, told Fistula Foundation, “It has been amazing for the students to discover that theatre can move people to take action, and they are thrilled to make a difference in the lives of at least six women in the DRC.”

“What the Fistula Foundation does is so important. When a woman with fistula is cured, she can do so many more things - focus on her family, her education, supporting herself financially. This nonprofit funds such wonderful work, and I am so impressed at their financial transparency. I really appreciate knowing where my donations are going. Five stars is not enough to give them!”

Because of donors like you, Fistula Foundation was able to provide life-changing treatment to more women than ever before. We are proud to have earned your trust and your support.

Fistula Foundation is committed to ending the suffering caused by the childbirth injury of obstetric fistula, because we believe no woman should endure a life of misery and isolation simply for trying to bring a child into the world.
