2012 Newsletter The Tipoff Event - December 7, 2011 The first annual 2011 Tipoff Event was a great success. Thank you to all the corporate sponsors and private donors. We were able to raise almost $27,000 for the Justin S. Monaghan, P.E., Fund for Geotechnical Engineering. About 100 attendees came to honor Justin’s memory and enjoyed a meal and the URI basketball game against Virginia Tech. Russ Morgan from GZA thanked everyone on behalf of the family and GZA. Professor George Tsiatas, head of the Civil Engineering Department, thanked everyone on behalf of University of Rhode Island. Professor Chris Baxter presented a plaque that is now posted in the geotechnical laboratory. The plaque describes Justin’s career and service to the geotechnical and engineering community.

2011 Use of Funds Some of the things accomplished with the Funds in 2011 and 2012: 

The URI geotechnical laboratory was beautified. Old cabinets were removed, and replaced with 3 framed geotechnical engineering photographs (including the photo to the right), along with the Justin S. Monaghan plaque. A civil engineering graduate student was sponsored to attend the ASCE GeoCongress conference in Oakland, California in March, 2012. The student attended with Professor Aaron Bradshaw, and who presented a paper related to their research in foundations for offshore wind. The 2011 Sponsor Board was laminated and featured prominently on the door of the geotechnical laboratory.
