EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The economy continues to recover from the “Great Recession.” Unemployment rates are gradually declining but the national workforce participation rate remains lower than prerecession figures. Silicon Valley’s economy continues to show positive signs of recovery and the workforce participation rate and number of available jobs continues to grow. Silicon Valley (Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties) workforce participation is slightly higher than prerecession figures. The national unemployment rate has dropped 1.4% the past 12 months to 6.1%, more than twice the rate it declined last FY. California continues to create jobs, bringing the state unemployment rate down 1.6% in the past 12 months to 7.4%. Santa Clara County, the heart of Silicon Valley, experienced substantial job growth; the county unemployment rate dropped 1.8% in the past 12 months to 5.4%. The San Jose State University Career Center experienced an increased demand for recruiting services. The number of employers connecting with SJSU for recruitment has grown significantly. SJSU job fairs have completely sold out the last three years, attracting approximately 1,300 recruiters to campus 2013/2014. As a result of the economic improvement and the SJSU Career Center’s robust job development strategy, 75,347 jobs and internships were made available to our students, alumni, and the community, a 42% increase over last FY. The SJSU Career Center attracted 2,755 new employers, an 11% increase from last FY, and 4,219 new recruiters and hiring representatives, a 5% increase over last FY. Collectively, the SJSU Career Center works with approximately 24,000 recruiters and hiring representatives from 17,000+ employers locally, nationally, and around the globe. The SJSU Career Center housed 11,820 internships, an 87% increase compared to last FY and 46,403 full-time job opportunities, a 48% increase over last FY. The student employment rate dropped approximately 8% from 66% to 58% in FY 2013/2014. Earned income also declined by $658 to an average earning of $11,577. Approximately 50% of the jobs obtained were internships. SJSU is a recruitment choice for tens of thousands of recruiters. The top ten industries represented are 1) engineering, IT, technology 2) business, finance, professional services 3) non-profit, government, public service 4) education 5) communications, advertising, publishing 6) manufacturing & distribution 7) healthcare 8) hospitality 9) retail, wholesale 10) construction, architecture, contracting. Areas showing increasing recruitment requests by employers pertain to computer and software engineering, programming and development, cyber security, technical writing, marketing, sales, social media, education (K-12), supply chain, user interface, big data, behavioral therapy, accounting, home healthcare aids, digital media, and finance. PURPOSE AND OVERVIEW  The San Jose State University (SJSU) Career Center specializes in college recruitment and prepares students and alumni job seekers for professional careers. This report summarizes the unique trends of college recruitment from SJSU to provide an overview and glimpse into the job market as it pertains to Silicon Valley’s largest educational institution of professionals. The SJSU Career Center analyzes jobs and internship data from seasonal, temporary, contract, part-time and permanent full-time employment opportunities. The following analysis summarizes the local economic landscape, the SJSU Career Center’s approach and strategy to job development/creation, information and statistics pertaining to recruitment events, job availability, wage/salary, student and recent graduate employment income, employment rate, unemployment rate, and will provide a general economic forecast.   ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE FY13/14 was a year of continued decline in national, state, and county unemployment. Santa Clara County unemployment dropped more rapidly than the national and state rates. National The national unemployment rate has decreased from 7.5% in June 2013 to 6.1% in June 2014, a 1.4% decrease1. This is a faster decline than last year. Although unemployment appears to decline nationally, the decline is in part due to a smaller ratio of individuals in the workforce. The 12 month average of the workforce participation rate in FY12/13 was 63.5% while FY13/14 was slightly lower at 63%. In June 2013, the estimated participation rate of the
