Team Superlatives    

2013 NCAA invite marks the seventh straight season the Frogs have qualified for the championships. TCU went undefeated in 2012-13, recording a 10-0 mark. The Frogs have won 41 straight regular season matches dating back to the 2009-10 campaign. On four occasions, the Frogs broke the 4,700 threshold, including a school-record 4,718 against Kentucky on Nov. 17. TCU has had a tremendous amount of success in the National Championships the last six seasons. They reached the pinnacle in both 2010 and 2012 as they took home the team National Championship as well as the Air Rifle National Championship in both 2010 and 2012. They have notched two fifth-place finishes (2007 and 2009) and a third place finish in 2008 and 2011. Additionally, Scherer took home the individual smallbore national championship in 2010 and 2012. All three seniors (Caitlin Morrissey, Sarah Beard and Sarah Scherer) are three-time All-Americans in both disciplines.

Team Superlatives…cont.    

Hannah Black qualified as an individual in air rifle. She's the first Horned Frog to qualify outside of the team qualifying since Celeste Green in 2006. Team is tied with the best smallbore score with West Virginia (2348), owns the second-best aggregate score (air rifle+smallbore) with a 4718 and the third-best air rifle score (2373). Five of the six TCU shooters own Air Rifle scores inside the top-10. Scherer (599), Beard (597), Morrissey (594), Black (593) and Green (592). Of the top 10 Smallbore scores on the year, TCU owns three of them. Scherer (597), Beard (591) and Lee (587).

USA Shooting Spotlights The Horned Frogs are led by a pair of senior Sarah’s in Scherer and Beard that form a unique duo as the only two collegiate shooters you’ll find competing this week that have made their way into USA Shooting’s exclusive National Team status with their performances in recent years. Catherine Green joins her two teammates as a member of the National Junior Team for USA Shooting. Meanwhile, Caitlin Morrissey has been a member of the National Junior Team as well during her TCU career. In 2012, all Sarah Scherer did was win an NCAA individual and team title and finish seventh in her first Olympic Games. Capping one of the most successful NCAA careers in the history of the sport, Scherer has shown she’s not a one-hit wonder. This season she broke the NCAA record in smallbore, shooting a 597 and combined with her air rifle score of 598, set a new NCAA aggregate score record. Sarah Beard was a fourth-place finisher in the Women’s 50m Three-Position rifle event at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore and is the 2011 National Champion in the event. Beard also was the silver medalist at the 2010 World Championships in the Junior Women’s Prone event as well. Catherine Green burst onto the USA Shooting scene last season with strong performances at the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) and the 2012 USA Shooting National Championships. Green finished second in the Junior Women’s 3P rifle event at Nationals while finishing third in the Junior Women’s Air Rifle. At the Junior Olympic Championships she completed the rare double by winning both Air and 3P Rifle events.

The Quotables . . . Sarah Beard, TCU Senior & USA Shooting National Team Member … “Like many seniors would say, I cannot believe I am heading toward my last NCAA Championships. It has been a tremendous journey since my freshman year here, not just for me, but for my team as well. The NCAA shooting experience is unlike anything else, because individual shooters must learn to deal with depending on the team for a solid performance, while they are also depending on you. We've made history at TCU, and I'm very excited for another opportunity to do so. Although I'm a bit sad that I won't be able to see some from the shooting community as often, I have truly enjoyed getting to know them. Shooting-wise, I feel like this year I have grown considerably compared to last year. NCAA's last year and the Olympic tryouts gave me the chance to learn skills that I would not have learned otherwise, especially with developing my mental game. I'm excited to put this to use in the next week.”

Karen Monez, TCU Head Coach … “Goal set, goal met is how I would describe this season. The team went in believing they could continue their winning record and their high expectations paid off with their third consecutive unbeaten regular season. Consistently finishing each semester with a high team GPA, they have also proven that you can have great academics and win championships.”
