2013 OFFICIAL RESULTS BOOK November 17, 2013

Greetings from the Event Organizers Dear Athletes and Friends...

ist Charles Dudley Warner, “Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” For the 11th Annual Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay last November, all of our crossed fingers must have been enough as race-day dawned calm, cool and cloudy: perfect running conditions. The sun even broke through for many enjoying the post-race celebration in Custom House Plaza at Monterey State Historic Park. Thousands set personal records on the rolling, flowing 13.1mile course. Of course, about 20-percent were sure to set PR’s as it was their first-ever half marathon! Whether it was your first or hundredth half, we hope you had a great experience and will make plans to join us again next year—and tell your friends. This event is produced by the same team of dedicated volunteers and staff that produce the Big Sur International Marathon weekend of events in April and the Run in the Name of Love 5K in Carmel on Father’s Day. Our non-profit organization’s mission is to serve the community by providing a world-class marathon and related fun events that raise money to benefit local charities while promoting health and fitness. The volunteer groups and organizations that handed you your race number and T-shirt, installed the fencing for your start corral, handed you a cup of water on the course, placed a medal around your neck when you finished, provided tasty refreshments after the race, and tore everything down and cleaned up within hours of the last finisher all receive financial grants. In total, in the 29-year history of the BSIM organization, more than $3.3 million has been awarded to these hard-working groups, military units and organizations. Please see the list of these organizations on page 39.

As event organizers, we work for months on the things we can control and hope for the best for the things we can’t. Weather is one of those things that, to quote novel-

Grove and California State Parks for extending a hospitable welcome mat. As an example of their commitment: a small restaurant grease fire flared up only a block away and 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the Pacific Grove Lighthouse 5K, held the day before the half marathon. After quickly assessing the situation, area fire and public safety officials determined they could control the fire without disrupting the start or race course and gave us the green light for an on-time start. Lucky? Perhaps a bit. We may cross our fingers now and then but we will continue to dedicate ourselves to improving our events for your safety, enjoyment and to help you reach your goals. Thanks again for your participation and best wishes for your training and racing.

Elite Review

Robb Hallock

Elite runners in the deepest field ever assembled for the Half Marathon on Monterey Bay woke up race morning to almost perfect running conditions.

Temperatures in the low 50’s and calm winds made a new course record a strong possibility. Although the course champion, Jacob Chemtai of the AmeriKenyan Running Club out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, missed the course record by 11 seconds, this race proved to be the fastest across the board in the event’s 11-year history.

The first mile of the race saw a pack of 14 runners take the lead. A noticeable runner at the back of this pack was Sarah Kiptoo, a very fast woman among the elite men. T
