JON P. YANKEE, MBA, CFP®

2013 PLANNER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Jon P. Yankee, MBA, CFP®, founded Fox, Joss & Yankee in January of 2006 with Marjorie Fox and Dan Joss. In addition to his duties as a Partner, Senior Financial Advisor, and Chief Financial Officer of the firm, Jon leads the development and implementation of the firm’s human capital strategy and its well-known summer associate (internship) program. Mr. Yankee was, in November 2012, named one of the DC/Metro area’s top financial advisors by Washingtonian magazine. In addition, during the fall of 2012, Jon was also named by Northern Virginia magazine in its “Top Financial Professionals” edition under the category of Investment management. In addition, in May of 2013, Jon’s firm was named the sixth “Best Place to Work” by Washington Business Journal. Jon is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), National Capital Area Chapter, serving as c-chair of its Membership Committee. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast/MidAtlantic Region of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) and is a NAPFA-Registered Financial Advisor. Mr. Yankee has been a speaker at a number of industry events and conferences focusing on internship programs and his firm’s hiring practices and strategies. He has also been quoted in publications such as Investment News, Financial Planning, The Journal of Financial Planning, Investment Advisor, Bloomberg Wealth Manager, Registered Rep., Forbes.com, Men’s Health, Financial Week, Bankrate.com, Wall Street Journal Online, and Dow Jones Newswire. Jon earned his Master of Business Administration in International Management with a focus on Finance from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management, in 1998. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies with a concentration in Asian Studies and Japanese from the University of Richmond in 1992. He also completed undergraduate work at Kansai University of Foreign Studies in Osaka, Japan from 1990-1991. Prior to founding FJY, Jon was a Lead Advisor at Rembert, Pendleton, & Fox (RPF), where he earned his Certified Financial Planner™ certification following coursework at the College for Financial Planning in Denver, CO. Mr. Yankee specializes in portfolio design and implementation, retirement planning, education planning, and cash management for professionals, retirees, young families, and non-profit/charitable organizations. Prior to joining RPF, Mr. Yankee was a Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch and a Financial Analyst with the Aerospace Division of Honeywell in Phoenix, AZ. He also worked five years in Honolulu, HI as a Program Manager for the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), an organization of chief executives that fosters and promotes the development of trade and trade policy throughout the Asia Pacific region. Jon lives in Ashburn, VA, with his wife, daughter, son, and their two Labrador Retrievers. He enjoys spending his free time with his family, in addition to playing and coaching soccer. He holds a National Youth Coaching License from the U.S. Soccer Federation and will soon be pursuing his National “D” License.

MICHAEL R. KALAS, CFP®, AIF® 2013 NORMA SEVERNS AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP

Michael is the President of Potomac Financial Private Client Group, LLC, a financial services company in McLean, VA. Michael provides comprehensive planning for individuals in the key areas of retirement, risk management, and estate planning, as well as corporate benefit planning for institutional, public, and privately held companies. Michael is qualified in the areas of personal financial planning, risk management, estate planning, asset allocation, and investments. He was awarded the title of Retirement Planning Specialist at his previous broker-dealer based on the receipt of a Certificate in Retirement Planning from The Wharton School of Business. Michael is the lead financial planner and wealth distribution strategist for an integrated wealth management team that focuses on providing customized financial planning strategies to individuals, families, and businesses. He is a frequent guest lecturer on financial planning topics and is actively involved with the Department of Defense providing financial planning seminars for senior officers retiring from military service. Michael was chosen by the Financial Planning Association (FPA) to provide pro bono financial planning for victims of the 9-11 attack and for military personnel returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Michael has been a CFP® professional since 1992. He is a former career Naval Officer who specialized in finance and logistics. His 23-year Navy career spanned both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. While on active duty, he was promoted from Midshipman to U.S. Navy Captain (O-6). He holds a BS from the U.S. Naval Academy and an MBA from Southern Illinois University. Along with his Pro Bono work with the FPA, Michael has been on the Investment Advisory Committee of the US Navy Supply Corps Foundation for 15 years and its former Chairman and Treasurer. Their mission is to provide college scholarships to the dependents of military service members. He is also currently on the Finance and Stewardship committees of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, MD. Michael resides in Potomac, MD and has been married to Deborah for 33 years. They recently welcomed their first grandchild, Henry into the family.

TIMOTHY W. JONES, CFP®

2013 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Timothy W. Jones, CFP®, MPA, currently serves as Chairman at CJM Wealth Advisers, Ltd. Tim is a graduate of Cornell University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1969 and Master of Public Administration degree in 1971. He traveled to the Washington, DC-area in 1971 to attend Engineer Officer Basic School at Fort Belvoir and after a brief period of active duty, went to work with Fairfax County Government as the Assistant Director of the Office of Management and Budget for nine years and then as the Director of Data Processing for six years. Tim moved into the financial planning business in 1987, getting his Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) practitioner designation from the College for Financial Planning in 1989. Tim assists with the management of the corporation, serves on the investment committee, and is a mentor to the younger planners in the organization. In addition to his management responsibilities of the firm, Tim provides a full range of financial planning services including investment, retirement, and long-term care planning for his clients. Tim was also named Financial Planner of the Year in 2006 by the National Capital Area Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. Tim continues his leadership and teaching practices in the local community. Tim taught courses with Fairfax County Adult Education from 1990 to 2000, as well as courses with the Fairfax Education Center, Freddie Mac, Verizon, E-Systems, and other organizations and corporations. Tim served on the Board of the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP) for eight years, completing his service as the President from 1996-1997. Tim annually assists with the Financial Planning Association’s January Educational Symposium. Tim has been named as one of the area’s best financial planners by Washingtonian Magazine, and has appeared in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, The Washington Post and FOX (DC), as a respected authority in the financial planning community. Tim is married to Mary Ellen, his wife of 43 years. They have 3 children and 7 grandchildren and reside in Herndon, VA

The criteria for the Leadership Awards were developed in 2003 and refined by subsequent committees. Each year these Awards are presented to the individuals who have been nominated by the members and selected by the Award Selection Committee. 1)
