Teams are awarded three points for each conference win in regulation or overtime, and one point for an overtime tie. Conference games still tied after a five-minute overtime advance to a three-player shootout with the team that wins the shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (SW in the standings). A shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the shootout receives just one point for the tie.

Saturday’s Highlights and Notes • Three of the four best-of-three NCHC quarterfinal series ended in sweeps Saturday night as top-seeded No. 1/1 North Dakota, fourth-seeded No. 8/7 Denver and sixth-seeded St. Cloud State all punched their ticket to next weekend’s NCHC Frozen Faceoff with a game two win. UND and Denver are making return trips to the Frozen Faceoff with DU looking to defend last year’s title, while SCSU earned its first trip to the Frozen Faceoff and is the only road team to win its series so far. • After two quarterfinal series went three games last season, only one quarterfinal series is heading to a decisive third game this year as seventh-seeded Western Michigan defeated second-seeded No. 5/5 Miami, 7-5, Saturday in Oxford to tie the series at 1-1. Both teams made the Frozen Faceoff last year winning their series in two games as SCSU will be the lone newcomer this season. The win was WMU’s first over Miami this season in six tries (1-4-1) while the 12 goals were the most combined goals in an NCHC Tournament game in the conference’s two-year history. Freshman forward Frederik Tiffels led the Broncos with two goals, his third multi-goal game this year but first since Dec. 12. • Although three of four Frozen Faceoff teams are known, the semifinal match-ups are still dependent on the result of Sunday’s game three between Miami and WMU. Should Miami win, UND would face St. Cloud State in one semifinal and Miami would battle Denver in the other semifinal. Should the Broncos win, North Dakota would face WMU in one semifinal while the Pioneers and Huskies would meet in the other semifinal. Teams are reseeded for the Frozen Faceoff semifinals. • DU sophomore goaltender Evan Cowley stopped all 36 shots he faced to backstop Denver to a 4-0 shutout of No. 6/6 Minnesota Duluth Saturday and secure a Frozen Faceoff berth. It was his third shutout of the season (and his career) but his first against an NCHC opponent. UMD was swept in a weekend series for the first time all season. • UND senior forward Connor Gaarder scored the game-winning goal Saturday late in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and give North Dakota a 3-2 win over Colorado College. Gaarder has now scored a goal in five of his last six games after just three goals in his first 31 games this season. Of his eight goals this year, five are game-winners with four of those game-winning goals coming in UND’s last five victories.

Weekend Update: March 15
Saturday Recaps UND, Denver and SCSU Advance to Frozen Faceoff with Sweeps Saturday Broncos top Miami, 7-5, to force lone game three Sunday
Saturday, March 14 Following Saturday’s quarterfinal games, the field for the 2015 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Frozen Faceoff is nearly complete as three teams punched their tickets to the NCHC’s championship weekend by completing sweeps while one series will go to game three on Sunday. Top-seeded North Dakota and fourth-seeded Denver both wrapped up sweeps to book return trips to the Frozen Faceoff while sixth-seeded St. Cloud State will be the only team to make its first Frozen Faceoff appearance this season. No. 1/1 North Dakota completed its sweep of eighth-seeded Colorado College with a 3-2 win over the Tigers Saturday night in Grand Forks as senior forward Connor Gaarder scored with less than two minutes left to play to break a 2-2 tie. UND placed third at last year’s Frozen Faceoff while the Tigers season came to a close with the sweep. Joining North Dakota in Minneapolis is No. 8/7 Denver, which blanked No. 6/6 Minnesota Duluth, 4-0, behind a 36-save shutout from sophomore goalie Evan Cowley to complete its quarterfinal series sweep in Denver. The Pioneers now have a chance to defend their Frozen Faceoff title from last season. St. Cloud State earned its first trip to the Frozen Faceoff with a 3-1 win at third-seeded No. 7/8 Omaha Saturday night to complete a sweep, striking once each period while sophomore goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped 35 shots in net. The Huskies won game one in double overtime on Friday. The final spot in the Frozen Faceoff will be determined Sunday night in Oxford as seventh-seeded Western Michigan put up seven goals in a 7-5 win at second-seeded No. 5/5 Miami Saturday to force a decisive game three. Freshman forward Frederik Tiffels had two goals in the win for WMU. Sunday’s game three between the RedHawks and Broncos is set for 7:05 p.m. ET and can be seen on NCHC.tv. Should Miami win, UND would face SCSU in one semifinal at the Frozen Faceoff, while the RedHawks would battle Denver in the other semifinal. Should WMU win, North Dakota would face the Broncos in one semifinal and the Pioneers and Huskies would meet in the other semifinal. The NCHC Frozen Faceoff is set for March 20-21 at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. Both semifinals will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network, along with the championship game. No. 8/7 DENVER 4, No. 6/6 MINNESOTA DULUTH 0 Recap courtesy Denver Athletic Media Relations DENVER - Backstopped by a 36-save shutout performance from sophomore goaltender Evan Cowley, fourth-seeded No. 8/7 Denver skated to a convincing 4-0 win over fifth-seeded No. 6/6 Minnesota Duluth at Magness Arena on Saturday night, completing an opening round playoff sweep of their NCHC rivals and punching their ticket to next weekend’s Frozen Faceoff in the process. After a back-and-forth opening 19 minutes of play, sophomore DU forward Trevor Moore tallied the game’s first marker, banking home a wrist shot off of UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo’s skate to register his 20th goal of the season. Denver took a 2-0 lead courtesy of Boston Bruins prospect Danton Heinen, who put on a clinic in stickhandling after entering Bulldogs territory prior to depositing the 16th marker of his season to the back of Minnesota Duluth’s net at the 7:36 mark of the second period. Senior forward Matt Tabrum put the hosts up by three 12:38 into the middle frame, rifling home his second goal of 2014-15 with

linemates Larkin Jacobson and Grant Arnold both drawing helpers on the play. Edmonton Oilers prospect and Hobey Baker Award candidate Joey LaLeggia then put the finishing touches on DU’s lopsided victory late in the third stanza, netting an empty-net marker with 2:23 remaining in regulation to give the Crimson & Gold the win by a four-goal margin. Denver will continue its conference postseason title defense on Friday, March 20 at Target Center in Minneapolis versus a TBD opponent. UMD, meanwhile, now awaits its NCAA Tournament destination in two weeks. WESTERN MICHIGAN 7, No. 5/5 MIAMI 5 Recap courtesy WMU Athletic Media Relations OXFORD, Ohio - Western Michigan forced a third and final game in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Quarterfinals after tying up the series 1-1 with a 7-5 win over Miami at Steve Cady Arena on Saturday night. The Broncos had six players with at least two points on the night along with goals by Frederik Tiffels, Nolan LaPorte, Colton Hargrove, Kyle Novak, Chris Dienes and Will Kessel. Sheldon Dries, Justin Kovacs and Hargrove each had two assists. Miami outshot Western Michigan 49-25 on the night but Frank Slubowski made 25 saves in relief of Lukas Hafner to earn the win in net. The RedHawks took a very early 1-0 lead at 2:24 in the first period. Riley Barber finished off a rush beating Hafner for his 18th goal of the season after a feed from Colin Sullivan. WMU’s Tiffels tied the game up with his first of two unassisted goals at 12:11. On a Miami power play the German national created a turnover at the WMU blue line and skated in on MU goalie Ryan McKay and beat him for his 10th goal of the season. The goal was also the second short-handed goal of the weekend for the Broncos. Tiffels struck again just 1:33 into the second period to give WMU a 2-1 lead. The freshman forward picked Barber’s pocket and created another breakaway, this time beating McKay with a top-shelf backhand shot for his 11th goal of the season. Just 44 seconds later LaPorte gave put Western Michigan up 3-1. Some highlight puck movement was capped off by a no-look drop pass by Dries to LaPorte and the junior captain buried it for his 11th goal of the season. Hargrove also picked up an assist on the goal. Austin Czarnik cut the lead to 3-2 on a slap shot from the left point for a power play goal at 8:28 in the second period. The Broncos responded quickly just 1:20 later when Hargrove punched in his 14th of the season. The big forward was hanging around the net with a scrum going on in the corner. LaPorte won the puck and found Hargrove alone in the slot for the easy tap-in. Czarnik scored his second of the night to bring the lead back to one at 4-3 at 11:03. A bad turnover pulled Hafner from the net and he wasn’t able to recover to get back for Czarnik’s shot. After that Slubowski was put in net for the remainder of the game, including 13 saves in the final 8:57 of the second period. WMU responded once again at 14:46 when Novak banked in a shot from behind the net off of the back of McKay and into the net for his fifth of the season to push the lead to 5-3. That spelled the end for McKay and Jay Williams came in for relief. Just before the end of the second Slubowski made a save on a two-on-one chance and WMU broke out during a period of four-

Hargrove found Dienes trailing and the sophomore defenseman skated to the slot and ripped one past Williams off the cross bar and in for his third goal of the season. The 6-3 lead stood until 16:22 in the third period when Sean Kuraly fired a shot in from the left circle to cut the lead back to two. The extra-attacker goal was his 18th on the season. Miami pulled its goalie once again and cut the lead to 6-5 with 23 seconds remaining after a goal by Blake Coleman. Kessel put the puck into the empty net with 12 seconds left to seal the 7-5 win. The final game of the series is on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET with a Frozen Faceoff berth on the line. ST. CLOUD STATE 3, No. 7/8 OMAHA 1 Recap courtesy St. Cloud State Athletic Media Relations OMAHA, Neb. - Sixth-seeded St. Cloud State punched its ticket to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff with a 3-1 win to complete a series road sweep of third-seeded No. 7/8 Omaha Saturday night. The Huskies defeated the Mavericks 2-1 in double overtime on Friday night. The Huskies will be making their first trip to the Frozen Faceoff to be played at Target Center in Minneapolis, Friday and Saturday, March 20-21. St. Cloud State improved to 18-17-1 overall and climbed to No. 11 in the pairwise rankings. Omaha fell to 18-12-6 overall and now awaits its NCAA Tournament fate in two weeks. Junior center David Morley scored the first goal of the game on the power play at 15:59 of the first period. Omaha’s Brian Cooper was called for a five minute boarding and game misconduct that put the Huskies on the long power play. Morley scored with :36 seconds left in the man advantage. It was his third goal of the weekend as he accounted for both of Friday’s goals. Ben Storm and Mika Ilvonen assisted on the play. Senior center Nick Oliver gave the Huskies a two-goal lead at 11:47 of the second period with a shot just inside the blue line. Joe Rehkamp and Tim Daly were credited with the assists on the play. Omaha’s Grant Gallo scored his second goal of the season on the power play at 16:44 of the third period and was assisted by Ian Brady and Jake Guentzel. A wrap around goal by Huskies junior wing Joey Benik gave the visiting team a two goal cushion at 17:37 of the third period. The Huskies were outshot 16-5 in the third period and 36-28 for the game. Sophomore goaltender Charlie Lindgren had 35 saves for a weekend total of 80 saves.
No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 3, COLORADO COLLEGE 2 Recap courtesy UND Athletic Communications GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Senior Connor Gaarder doesn’t score a lot of goals for his University of North Dakota hockey team, just eight in 37 games this season to be exact. But the reputation that the senior center from Edina, Minn., has earned as “Big Game’’ Gaarder came to the front again tonight at a perfect time for his team. Gaarder’s eighth goal of the season with 82 seconds remaining in regulation play lifted UND to a 3-2 National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory and a sweep of the first-round playoff series with Colorado College at Ralph Engelstad Arena. Gaarder drove to the net on a 2-on-1 rush with freshman wing Austin Poganski and dove to tip in the centering pass past the right shoulder of CC goalie Tyler Marble (28 saves). That sent UND to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at the Target Center in Minneapolis next weekend. Gaarder’s fifth goal in the last six games gave UND (27-7-3) a sweep of the six games against the Tigers this season and ended the season for the Tigers (6-26-3). UND had a battle on its hands all night against the Tigers, fighting to extend their season at least another game. Teemu Kivahalme scored on a point shot to give CC the first lead at 15:23 of the first period. It was a goal quickly answered by the fourth goal of the season for UND defenseman Jordan Schmaltz at 16:16 on a setup from younger brother Nick Schmaltz. UND went ahead 2-1 at 9:40 of the second period when senior wing Brendan O’Donnell one-timed a perfect pass out of the corner from senior defenseman Nick Mattson for O’Donnell’s 13th of the season. But CC tied it on a wraparound by sophomore wing Luc Gerdes off the body of UND goalie Zane McIntyre (31 saves) at 6:10 of the third period. That came two minutes after the Tigers had a killed a 5-on-3 UND power play lasting 91 seconds, limiting UND to just three outside shots on goal. Gaarder then delivered the game-winning goal (his fifth this season) in the closing minutes to send UND on to the conference tournament for the 13th straight year. UND, after beating the Tigers 5-1 Friday night in the series opener, had to battle to the finish to prevail tonight. But when it was over, NCHC commissioner Josh Fenton was on hand to present the Penrose Cup as league regular-season champions to UND in front of thunderous, appreciative fans as UND closed out its final home game of the season in style. UND will play either St. Cloud State or Western Michigan in one of two NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinals on Friday at Target Center in Minneapolis.
