2016-2017 Club Participation and Impact Report SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF THE AMERICAS

In 2016-2017, 1,467 women received over $2 million in funding through the Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women. This year, funding increased by $196,250 (11%) and 112 additional women received the award (8%). The total of non-cash awards given by clubs was valued at more than $130,806 (120% increase). Additionally, 84% of clubs in Soroptimist International of the Americas participated in the Live Your Dream Awards, which is a 3 percentage point increase from last year. These increases in funding provided to recipients, number of women honored with an award, additional support, and club participation demonstrate clubs’ and regions’ response to our organizational goal of increased collective impact. Increased impact for the Live Your Dream Awards, in addition to 80,000 supporters engaged in LiveYourDream.org, more and diverse funders, and a slowdown in our membership decline prove that we can accomplish more when we work together. To secure our future – and the impact we have on women – we need to continue our efforts to work towards the same goals. SIA is committed to honoring more women disadvantaged by poverty, violence, homelessness, teen pregnancy, illness and other obstacles to living their dreams. SIA’s research found 9.6 million women in our 20 countries and territories who are women head of households living in poverty. For us to grow our collective impact – and for others to understand how our global efforts improve the lives of disadvantaged women – we need to continue investing our resources in the Live Your Dream Awards to strengthen our story of greater impact. To determine the impact of the Live Your Dream Awards, SIA sends a survey to recipients three years after they receive their award. In 2016-2017, SIA sent surveys to 925 women who received an award in the 2013-2014 club year. Recipients from three years ago shared exciting results: • • • • • •

80% increased their standard of living for themselves and their dependents 96% reported increased self-esteem 84% who completed their education secured higher-paying employment 97% earned or are continuing to work towards an educational degree/certification 80% increased their standard of living for themselves and their dependents 94% reported serving as a role model for their dependents

Inspiring Stories In addition to quantifiable results, we also received stories from women about how the program has affected their lives and the lives of their families. From a recipient in the United States who went on to complete her degree as well as experience increased selfesteem, pay-level, and standard of living, and now serves as a role model for her child: “I taught my daughter, through example, that nothing is impossible if you try hard enough. 2016-2017 LIVE YOUR DREAM AWARDS: CLUB PARTICIPATION AND IMPACT REPORT From a recipient in Japan who went on to earn her degree as well as experience increased self-esteem, pay-level, and standard of living, and now serves as a role model for her child: “Ever since I became a mother, I felt big pressure from my responsibilities as a mother and found it stressful. In Japan, generally speaking, once a woman becomes a mother, she no longer lives as a woman and the society expects her to be "a good mother." I found this very stifling. When I received the Live Your Dream Award, I was able to reaffirm myself as a woman. I decided that it was important for me to live my life as I want it rather than try to be a good mother, and this has had positive impact on my daughter.”

From a recipient in Canada who went on to earn her degree, experienced increased self-esteem, pay-level and standard of living, and now serves as a role model for her children: “As a single parent and sole provider for my children, I have been able to move out of low-income housing, be more involved in my children's lives with working a Monday to Friday job and been able to give my children more opportunities in sports and school because of the increase in our standard of living.” From a recipient in the United States who went on to complete her degree as well as experience increased selfesteem, pay-level , and standard of living, and now serves as a role model for her children: “Both of my children have watched me work hard to complete my education and secure a job to support them. Both have told me how proud they are of me for following my dream and working so hard.”

Club Participation In 2016-2017, a total of 1,058 clubs participated in the Live Your Dream Awards and thirteen regions reached 100% participation: America del Sur Region, Brazil Region, Desert Coast Region, Founder Region, Golden West Region, Mexico/Centroamerica Region, Midwestern Region, North Central Region, Northeastern Region, Philippines Region, Sierra Pacific Region, Southern Region, and Taiwan Region.
