2015 - 2016 Yearbook & Member Directory
Welcome to the first Yearbook & Directory of the Arabian Sport Horse Alliance, Inc.! This inaugural 2015-2016 Arabian Sport Horse Alliance Yearbook and Member Directory celebrates the activities of the Alliance in his first two years and shines a spotlight on our members to help promote their farms and horses. This publication is intended to be analogous to the yearbooks that many of the sport horse registries publish annually. Contents include: • Articles about our first honorees for the Lifetime Achievement, Horse of the Year, Hall of Fame Person, and Hall of Fame Horse Awards • Information and winner lists of the ASHA Highlight Awards that recognize achievements of Arabian-bred horses and ponies in all-breed sport horse competitions • Winners of the 2015 Year End Competition Awards (2016 winners announced in early 2017) • Charter Member list • Sponsor “Thank Yous” • Farm Profile pages for Member Farms • Stallion Profile pages for Farm Members’ Stallions • Youth Member Spotlights • A few informational/educational articles • A summary of the organization’s activities to date and goals for the future • A directory of members who joined in 2015 -2016 with a listing of their horses for those who elected to include them Thank you all to all our Charter Members and Members for joining the Alliance and helping to build a unique organization to serve the “big tent” of the Arabian sport horse community. The Board of Directors are deeply honored by and grateful for your support of the organization. The Alliance brings together people from a number of registries and all the sport horse disciplines. While the needs and concerns of a member new to the sport horse disciplines may differ from those of a member who has been breeding and competing Arabian-bred horses at upper levels for decades, what we all share is a deep appreciation for the qualities offered by Arabian bred sport horses and a desire to connect with others who share that passion. The Alliance was created as a member based organization to help join together the various segments of the sport horse community involved with Arabian-bred horses so we could work together to support and promote efforts to raise the profile of Arabianbred sport horses and ponies. Ultimately, YOUR participation with and dedication to the Arabian-bred sport horse is at the heart of the Alliance. Whether you are a breeder, amateur exhibitor, promising youth participant, or talented professional; whether you focus on Arabians, Shagya-Arabians, Anglo-Arabians, Half-breds, or part-breds in sport registries the Alliance welcomes you and hopes you will help us to build this organization to serve this incredible community of people who appreciate the many talents and qualities of Arabian-bred sport horses.

uilding a member based organization from scratch requires a massive amount of work behind the scenes to create systems and tools to manage the day to day functions, develop programs, and work towards our long term goals. Our BOD and officers generously serve the organization as hard working volunteers who are striving to make a difference for the community.
N
oran (Oran x Nerina by Rissalix) was a 1956 chestnut Arabian stallion bred by Lady Wentworth. There are a number of
significant details about Noran that make him worthy of being rescued from obscurity and recognized by an Arabian Sport Horse Alliance Hall of Fame Award. Purchased by Dr H C E M Houtappel and exported to the Netherlands in 1960, Noran was an influential sire. He won many prizes in the show ring including Champion Stallion of the Netherlands in 1959. First hand reports indicate that Noran was noted for superlative movement. Noran sired 32 purebred foals in the Dutch Stud Book including
ing success and the lineage patterns associated with it is

being exported to the US. Noran is most often remembered as the sire of the Anglo-Arabian showjumper “Rex The Robber” ( X Berenice xx) who was successful in international show jumping in the 1970s with Alwin Schockemöhle including earning a silver medal at the European Championships in 1973. Less well known is that Noran was approved for breeding in the KWPN (Dutch Warmblood) studbook and sired a number of KWPN offspring including a 1973 bay stallion name Olympus who became the first international Grand Prix dressage horse for the Netherlands with rider Dirk Jan Dekker before being sold to Japan in 1986. Siring two international sport horses, Rex the Robber and Olympus, was an incredible achievement for an Arabian stallion. Interestingly, Noran is just one example of horses that blended Oran and Rissalix lineage to produce elite sport horse ability in both purebreds and when Rex The Robber
crossed with other breeds. Noran has modern descent in the US, the UK, and Europe. Recognizing this kind of breed14
Early in our planning for the organization, we recognized that in order to function from an online base, we needed tools to help us stay organized and process information. There are two inter-connected tools that have been invaluable. Firstly, thanks to Entice Web Design we have a fairly sophisticated website that looks fantastic, and gives us tools like secure commerce functions and web forms. The web forms on the site allow us to not just process memberships, but also to post the member farm profiles and member ads directly from member submitted forms. This “automation” is a great tool for a small volunteer run organization. As the Alliance grows, we will be able to continue to develop the website to offer more features that will help promote the interests of our members and offer the membership some useful tools for showcasing their Arabian-bred sport horses and their breeding programs. Secondly, Charter Farm member Thom Jones-Low donated many hours of his time to create an off-line database that allows us to import the information from web forms (like membership contact information and horse recording information) so that we can store that information easily and accessibly. We can then import the stored information into publications like the ASHA Member Yearbook & Directory and the ASHA Stallion Roster. Thom has also added features to the database to store records of the ASHA Competition Points Program and calculate the points as the results are entered. These database functions are essential to our small volunteer staff for managing many of our programs and services. While much of the BOD’s efforts have been on administrative tasks, we have also been able to engage in outreach
efforts to forge connections and explore opportunities to broaden support for and promotion of Arabian-bred sport horses in the wider sport horse world. Since launching the organization just 18 months ago, we have: • Published a Member Handbook (updated annually), a newsletter, and our first Stallion Roster for our Charter Farm and Farm members’ Arabian, Shagya-Arabian, AngloArabian, Half-Arabian, and partbred Arabian stallions. • Implemented our Year End Competition Awards Program giving out awards in 15 competition categories the first year and expanding it for the 2016 competition to include separate recognition categories for Youth Riders and for Arabian-breds competing in Pony Divisions • Joined the USEF as an Alliance Partner Member • Joined the US Sport Horse Breeders Association as a business member • Bestowed multiple Highlight Awards to recognize Arabianbred horses at prominent allbreed sport horse competitions. We were able to offer a few Highlight Awards just a few months after the organization launched in 2015, and are proud to have expanded the program in 2016 to include the National Dressage Pony Cup, the Young Horse Show Series, the 2016 Nutrena USEA American Eventing Championships presented by Land Rover, Starr Vaughn Summer Dressage, and the USDF CDS Northern Jr./ Young Riders Championships • Held our first election to fill two expired Board Member positions • Sought nominations for and then selected honorees for our major recognition awards –Lifetime Achievement, Horse of the Year, Hall of Fame Person, and Hall of Fame Horse. • Held the first ASHA Annual Membership Meeting online • Held fun door prize drawings at AHA SHN in 2015 & 2016 • Advertised on the back cover of the Sport Horse Nationals show programs 15

If Shagya-Arabians are Sport Horses, Why Haven’t I Heard of Them?
By Adele Furby

ou are not alone. In Europe the breed is often referred to as the “New-Old” breed. And in truth, it is. It is “new” because Shagya-Arabians are being rediscovered by many around the world, and “old” because Shagya-Arabian breeding began over 225 years ago, in 1789, when the Babolna State Stud in Hungary was founded. The Shagya-Arabian breed was developed to be an elite riding and driving horse for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, as well as an all-purpose military horse during the era when the horse was essential for every country’s defense. Concurrently the Shagya-Arabian served as an “improvement” horse--a horse to be used in crossbred breeding to upgrade other breeds. Based largely on desert Arabian bloodlines, traces of several Arabianinfluenced Transylvanian light horse breeds as well as the Spanish progenitors of the Lipizzaner breed and English Thoroughbred can be seen in Shagya pedigrees. However, these traces are at least 10 generations removed from current Shagya-Arabians pedigrees. The breed acquired its name from an original Arabian stallion bred by the Bani Saher tribe, foaled in 1830 in what is now Syria. Of the Koheil Siglavy strain, he, along with a number of other desert Arabians was imported to Babolna by an Austro-Hungarian horse-buying expedition in 1836. This original “SHAGYA d.b.” was remarkably strong and tall, standing almost 16 hands. He exerted such a strong influence over the breed that eventually the
Purebred Shagya-Arabian Society International (the ISG), the international breeding organization for Shagya-Arabians, adopted this name for a breed which had variously been known in Europe as “Araberrasse” (Arabian-bred), “Babolna Arabians”, or “part-bred Arabs”. This official adoption of the term “Shagya-Arabian” did not occur until 1978 when the breed and it’s name was accepted by WAHO as a distinct sub-species of Arabian horse. So you can see why even in Europe, while the Shagya-Arabian horse itself is not so unknown, common usage of the name for the breed is relatively new. As an example, in August of 1989 while at the Purebred Shagya Society International Championship Show in St. Gallen, Switzerland, a Swiss judge of the riding classes said to me, “You know, a number of years ago I had a horse that I now realize was a Shagya-Arabian, but at the time he was just considered a partbred Arab with no special breed identity. This is the first time I’ve judged riding classes at a Shagya-Arabian show and when I look back I realize it was the best riding horse I ever hadl! Strong praise from a credible source for a “new-old” breed! The Babolna State Stud, located between Vienna and Budapest, developed the breed’s sport horse qualities and genetic strength through the most effective methods. Firstly, it maintained a rigorous set of performance tests for both mares and stallions before they were accepted for breeding. Methods included a 480-mile ride in 10 days across plains, forest, and mountains, 2-mile sprints,
For many years the “flagship” stallion in Europe of the Shagya-Arabian breed, Danish-bred SHAGAL stood a full 16.1 hands and was a talented jumper and dressage horse. He was used as an improvement stallion in Denmark for Danish Warmbloods and Germany for Trakehners. He crowned his career by becoming chief stallion at the Babolna State Stud to help bring the Babolna State Stud back to its former breeding glory.

and long-distance driving. \Mares as well as stallions were also sent to the headquarters of cavalry regiments near established hunt clubs and officers would ride them in the hunting field. A careful record was made describing the horse’s jumping, speed, condition, disposition, as well as how good a keeper the horse was. Mares and stallions which did not meet the highest standards in these performance tests were all sold at auction or sent to other state studs to be used as outcrosses/improves for breeds such as the Kisber Felver and the Gidran. Secondly, besides using culling coupled with performance testing, the Hungarians were able to use extensive progeny testing. New desert Arabian stallions were bred to 30 mares for each of three successive years. Ten of the stud’s best, ten of the middle quality, and ten of the lowest quality mares were used, and at the end of the three-year period, all the offspring were brought up before the breeding committee for evaluation. If the offspring were not judged to be good enough, the entire group was sold. Consequently, very few stallions were actually allowed to continue in the breed.
saved from the slaughterhouse in this way. Consequently, the torch of purebred Shagy-Arabian breeding was passed on to West Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Switzerland. In recent times Shagya-Arabian breeders have also organized breeding groups in Norway, Sweden, Italy, France, North America, Venezuela and Columbia. Also, since 1989, along with the revitalization of the Shagya-Arabian breed in Babolna itself, the eastern European countries of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Rumania have managed to continue their traditional ShagyaArabian breeding programs and they have also joined the ISGArabian as full participating members. Over the past 20 years, the annual world-wide foal crop for Purebred Shagya-Arabians has averaged around 500 individuals. For many years the country with the most active Shagya-Arabian breeding was the country we most often associate with sport horse breeding--Germany, although in recent years the revival of ShagyaArabian breeding in Hungary in particular has resulted in an upsurge in numbers there as well. In Germany Shagyas have an excellent reputation as sport horses. They compete regularly at the various stallion performance tests against the Warmblood breeds, and several times have come out champion or reserve champion at these tests.
Thirdly, the Hungarians were able to maintain athletic ability and genetic strength through judicious line Elegant and a convincing performer, German-bred PAMINO Purebred Shagya-Arabreeding coupled with was several times halter champion and was reserve cham- bian have also contribcareful and regularly pion of the 100 day stallion performance test in Warendorf uted significantly to the repeated (usually once against a couple of dozen of the best Hannoverian stal- development of those self every 4 generations) lions in Germany. JORDI was bred in Poland, and it was there that Another reason why the Shagya-Arabians have remained relatively unknown is that political and geographic factors have played a big role in its recent history. A large majority of the world’s Shagya-Arabians were in the wrong place at the wrong time during the final days of World War II. Many were killed or slaughtered for food, still others were captured as prizes of war and eventually lost. Shortly thereafter, when the Communist regime took over Hungary in the 1950’s Shagya-Arabian breeding at the Babolna State Stud was given pitifully low priority. Fortunately, knowledgeable horse breeders in western European countries were able to salvage some of the most superior remnants of the Shagya-Arabian bloodstock--many were
her famous son RAMSES was born, although he eventually stood at stud in Germany. RAMSES’s sire was the English Thoroughbred RITTERSPORN XX. RAMSES is probably best known to Americans as the sire of the famous CONDUS, but RAMSES actually spread his positive influence over seven different German Warmblood breeds, and is called a “Century stallion” in Europe. Most of the German Warmbloods whose name begins with the letter “R” are descendants of RAMSES. He is considered especially remarkable for his ability to sire top jumper as well as dressage horses. And his dam was a Shagya-Arabian.

The other three most influential Shagya-Arabians in warmblood breeding are GAZAL VII, LAPIS, and BAJAR. GAZAL VII was head stallion at the Babolna State Stud for many years, and was imported into Germany in the 1960’s. He and several of his sons and grandsons have stood at the Hanoverian State Stud at Celle, and were also used for Trakehners, Holsteiners, and Westphalians. Interestingly, his grandson AMOR was also leased to the Austrian State Lipizzaner stud in Piber in order to help regenerate that breed. The Yugoslavian-born LAPIS was ridden by a German officer to Russia and back during World War II, surviving many hardships in the Russian winter campaign and taking his rider safely back to Germany, where he was bred to a Hungarian-bred mare of largely Thoroughbred breeding to produce the famous BURNUS, a horse who qualified for the German Olympic Team in both dressage and eventing. BURNUS has become another legend in German Warmblood breeding, producing such horses as the eventing champion WINDFALL who was eventually exported to the USA. In recent years the German-bred BAJAR has risen to the top in terms of the numbers of his descendants who are winners in dressage and jumping on an international level. Among them was the BAJAR daughter WHITE GIRL, a mare out of a Trakehner mare who was on the German eventing Olympic team in Atlanta.

So, what is this breed actually like? The purebred Shagya-Arabian is a medium-size (15 hh--16.lhh) horse of distinctly Arabian character exhibiting the sport horse qualities of substantial bone, strong rectangular frame, long sloping pelvis, prominent withers and good saddle position, broad strong coupling with a harmonious topline, inherent jumping ability, powerful elastic gaits, and high rideability. Equally important is the Shagya-Arabian’s inborn calmness, friendliness towards humans and a great work ethic. With some of the oldest written pedigrees in the horse breeding world the breed has nearly unrivaled genetic predictability. The best introduction is to see one in person, because in person you can experience their elegant and flowing movement coupled with their proud, yet down-to-earth working disposition.
ment and each ride that we have together. It has been a rewarding show season, but even more importantly I have had the privilege of spending time with Rebel improving our connection, learning new things and being grateful for each moment. We have had many people in our corner on this journey. I’d like to thank each and every one that has supported us on this adventure, whether it be a kind word, sending prayers or healing energy or a positive thought. It has made all the difference. The Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry: A Modern Approach to Historic Breeding Excellence
In
July, 2012, the Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry (PShR) was accepted as a member of the International Shagya Araber Gesellschaft (ISG). The PShR prides itself in combining the traditional testing procedures used worldwide with modern standards including the Interior test and mare performance testing. Testing provides valuable information for breeders seeking appropriate breeding stock and it provides documented information for buyers seeking accurate information when selecting the perfect riding horse.
chance to learn from expert European judges while enjoying time spent together with friends, old and new. The PShR invests in the expense and organizational efforts to bring experienced ISG approved Shagya-Arabian judges from Europe. We have had judges with FEI judging experience in eventing and dressage, judges who have worked at and/or been directors at Shagya-Arabian State Studs, and judges that are currently active in the ISG. The use of European judges has helped the PShR assure accurate studbook placement for breeding stock in North America and require mandatory performance testing of stallions.
The PShR is committed to a system of inspections and performance testing in North America to determine and recognize:
WHAT HAPPENS AT A PShR INSPECTION?
• Shagya-Arabian breeding stock
Mares and Stallions are “inspected” while Geldings and Shagya Sporthorses are “evaluated.” Both consist of multiple, mandatory phases. For Mares and Stallions, successful completion of these requirements results in PShR Licensing and placement in the PShR Studbooks per their performance and pedigree. The PShR Studbooks are recognized by all members of the ISG worldwide. For Geldings and Shagya Sporthorses, evaluation and the successful com-
• Showcase the Shagya-Arabian geldings and Shagya Sporthorses • Open to all Shagya-Arabians and Shagya sport horses, even those not registered with the PShR • Open to Purebred Arabians seeking breeding approval and/or testing validation WHY AN INSPECTION? The PShR uses a performance based inspection to determine breeding stock and recognize (and appreciate) the progeny resulting from performance breeding. The Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry has aligned with the ISG and uses a “European style” inspection and licensing system comprised of multiple tests and standards. The mandatory requirements for breeding animals includes the presentation of the horse in-hand, mandatory SCID test for all purebred Arabians seeking Shagya-Arabian breeding approval, free jumping, DNA must be on file, Interior test, rideablilty with test riders, and an onsite veterinary exam. In addition to the mandatory requirements, all breeding animals must compete in their choice of competition. For example, mares seeking Book I placement they may either 1) complete 500 miles of distance riding, 2) place in the USDF All-Breed division at training level, compete at “E” level in eventing or jumping or obtain points as a meritorious mare by producing a significant number of performance proven offspring.
1. All mares and stallions seeking licensing and breeding approval must stand for examination by the licensed Veterinarian at the inspection site. Geldings and Shagya Sporthorses stand as well for documentation. The horse’s height, girth and cannon bone will be measured; the pulse and respiration will be taken; the eyes, mouth, teeth and jaw, legs and hooves will be examined. The purpose of the exam is to look for anomalies, heart defects, existing faults of teeth or testicles, deficiencies or other conditions indicating genetic predisposition. The exam also will include, but is not limited to, a flexion test and trot out on a hard surface. The horse should willingly cooperate with the examination protocol. Geldings previously used for breeding may not be presented for stallion breeding approval per the ISG guidelines but may be evaluated as a gelding. 2. The in-hand presentation includes the triangle as per the USDF specifications. In addition, horses are allowed to show at liberty. USDF criteria for in-hand presentation includes appropriate dress of the handler, horses well groomed, and a bridle on horses 2 years of age or older. 3. The Interior Test is designed to determine the character and temperament of the horse in an unusual situation. The horse is scored on his willingness to walk beside the handler in an easily managed fashion. 4. To complete the Rideability test, horses four years of age or older are ridden at a walk, trot and canter in the discipline style of the riders’ choice. Each horse is ridden by the owner and two test riders. The judges and test riders score the horse based on their overall impression, willingness to work and temperament.
pletion of the mandatory tests along with performance testing results in certification and recognition. The inspection process takes place over the course of several days, depending on the number of horses to be inspected and what phases will be participated in by each horse and his owner/handler. Participants can complete any phases of the inspection they want, it is not necessary to complete all phases at one time. For example, if a horse is too young to be ridden or not yet trained in jumping, these phases can be completed at a later date. One of the simplest tests to prepare for and complete is the Interior Test, which makes it a good place to start.
The significance of holding an inspection of this type is two-fold: 1. First, it provides an opportunity to showcase the many talents of the Shagya-Arabian and Shagya Sporthorses and to promote the rare breed to the public. 2. Second, it gives the PShR members and guests a 50
5. The Free Jump, which is a jump chute consisting of three obstacles, in this order: a simple cross-rail, a vertical, and an oxer. The horse would be released into the chute, and the height and spread of the oxer would be increased at the discretion of the judge during the multiple runs through the course. The horse is evaluated on his bascule (well-arched back). HOW TO COMPLETE PERFORMANCE TESTING (KEURING) The PShR provides several options for horses to complete their performance testing in open competition. The complete list for stallions, mares, geldings and Shagya Sporthorses can be found on the PShR website at www. performanceshagyaregistry.org in the RZBO (Breeding guidelines) approved by the ISG. The ISG establishes a minimum standard for performance testing while encouraging a higher level of testing and awards Elite status when specific criteria are met. Shagya Keurings in Europe are com-
parable to Warmblood licensing standards. A couple of examples of minimum performance requirements for licensing include: 5.I.1. Jumping • Placed at least five (5) times in the upper 25% of a class at a level comparable to the RZBO requirement of “LLevel” of 1 meter 20. • Competitions must be recognized by the USEF. 5.I.2. Dressage • Receive the USDF All-Breed award at First Level 5.I.3. 3-day Event • Placed at least five (5) times in the upper 25% of a class at a level comparable to the RZBO requirement “Llevel” of 1 meter 20. • Competitions must be recognized by the USEF. Other options include Endurance riding, Distance Riding, Stallion Testing Trials, Racing, and Meritorious Sire. All in detail on the PShR website. Other disciplines such as Western Riding, Reining, Hunter, Driving and other riding disciplines can be submitted to the PShR for consideration. WHAT ARE THE RESULTS? A breed association or horse owner can passionately and earnestly describe the greatness of their horses, but presenting the horses to be evaluated against unbiased standards adds legitimacy to those claims and the breeding approval process forms a foundation to ensure high quality in the future generations of the breed for others to enjoy. At the most recent PShR inspection tour, the ShagyaArabian mares that were evaluated proved they are more than just pretty faces with good scores for free-jumping, riding, and the interior test. Having a number of Shagya Sporthorses (outcrosses with at least 25% Shagya in their pedigree) presented was an excellent opportunity to visualize the positive influence the Shagya-Arabian has on other breeds. Our beloved Shagya-Arabian geldings, the true ambassadors of our breed, put their hearts into the free-jumping, showed their willingness to work for various riders, and exhibited confidence going through the interior test. The purebred Arabians that were presented exemplified why we maintain a link to original roots of elegance, stamina, and personality. While the Shagya-Arabian is building in numbers, dedicated breeders are ensuring quality over quantity to maintain an elegant and harmonious riding horse. Members of the PShR look forward to a continued and brilliant future for our beloved Shagya-Arabian worldwide. 51

AHSA’S UPCOMING PROJECTS 1. The Alliance is proud to be preparing to seek nominations for the 2nd Annual Honoree awards to recognize significant contributions to the Arabian sport horse community. These awards include a. ASHA Horse of the Year Award to recognize outstanding achievement in sport horse performance or sport horse breeding culminating sometime within the last 18 months. (Horse must be owned by an ASHA member.) b. ASHA Hall of Fame Horse a memorial award to draw attention to an Arabian-bred sport horse from the past. c. ASHA Hall of Fame Individual a posthumous award to memorialize someone who made a significant impact on the Arabian sport horse community
WANTS YOU!
3. The BOD is also working hard behind the scenes to plan for and run the second ASHA Election to fill 4 BOD member positions for a 2 year term (1/1/2017 -12/31/2018) and 2 alternate BOD members for a 1 year term for 2017. All four officer positions, President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer are also up for election. Current holders of BOD positions may run for re-election. otification of the nomination process will go out to the membership and the slate of candidates will be presented after the close of the nomination period. Ballots will be sent to all members to submit their votes. Results will be announced at the 2nd ASHA Annual Meeting.
d. ASHA Lifetime Achievement Award to honor a living individual (or breeding program) who has made a sustained contribution to supporting, advancing, and/or developing some aspect of the Arabian sport horse community. (Read about the 2015 Honorees in this Yearbook & Directory!)
4. We will hold the 2nd Annual Membership Meeting online again this year. We expect to use the same software as last year, “Go to Seminar”. In advance of the meeting the BOD will present some proposals to the membership to be discussed and voted upon at the meeting. Winners of the 2016 Honoree Awards and of the BOD election will be announced. More information will be sent to the membership as plans are finalized.
2. We are close to launching Business Affiliate Memberships with various support levels that will offer opportunities for businesses to help support our mission via sponsorships and informational/educational outreach while in turn providing them with advertising opportunities on the website and in our publications. These supporting memberships will provide additional revenue to strengthen and expand our programs, awards, and activities.
5. Investigate level of interest in member participation in full page ads in various all-breed sport horse publications much like the ads we have been placing in the AHA Sport Horse Nationals Show Program. By placing ads in all-breed publications, we can promote our horses to a wider audience and reach out to others who are involved with Arabian-bred sport horses and ponies who may not be aware of our organization.

Sometimes Adele’s Shagyas is the oldest breeder of Purebred Shagya-Arabians in North America. I introduced the Shagya-Arabian breed to America in 1986 when I imported two stallions and three mares from Europe and founded the North American Shagya-Arabian Society. I subsequently imported another mare from Hungary in 1993. These, plus my original foundation stallion Hungarian Bravo, formed the basis for Adele’s Shagyas bloodstock. For many years I was the biggest producer of both purebred Shagya-Arabians as well as Shagya/Warmblood crosses. Although my background in riding and training and genetics is quite varied, for many years dressage has been my first love. Since 1989 I have been internationally certified as a Shagya-Arabian judge and I have judged many shows in most European countries, as well as Venezuela, I have been the honored to judge the European Championships six times --most recently in 2016. I have also conducted and judged nine Inspection Tours for Shagya-Arabians in North America.

Golden Oaks Arabians & Warmbloods is a small breeding program nestled in the foothills of Northern California. A partnership between Denise Cossuto & Tamara Torti who share a passion for producing Arabian bred sport horses with the amateur owner in mind. Coming from endurance & dressage backgrounds our vision is unique and the resulting foals have been even better than we had dreamed. The foundation of our program is our mares. The Hanoverian approved Arabian, Caraechstrodinair, is our cornerstone mare; she continually produces foals that exceed our expectations. She is the only Arabian mare to receive a "10" at a Hanoverian Inspection and produce a Top Foal at an Inspection. Her offspring are just now making their way into the show ring with AHA Regional Championships in SHIH, SHUS & Dressage. Her Champion offspring include Excepchanel & Magicaul Powers with Landinair, French Rivi Aira GOA & Wild Ivy GOA waiting in the wings. Our Arabian-bred and Warmblood mares are selected for characteristics that lend themselves to producing horses well suited for endurance & dressage. Good minds and trainability are high on our list, along with correct gaits that show the expression needed to be competitive at the open shows & on the endurance trails. We always try to have young prospects for sale and sometimes have riding horses or mares available.

Roze Arabians Ltd. grew out of my personal love and admiration for the Arabian as a versatile performance horse. Once I became the owner of my own Egyptian Arabian I was also introduced to their high degree of trainability and their desire to join into a working partnership in any under saddle discipline. My discipline of choice is dressage and my Egyptian partners have eagerly become zealous dance partners. Not only are our horses athletically talented, but they truly enjoy the mental challenges that arise in the dressage arena. Once in the arena they take pleasure in showing off their skills and give their hearts to the endeavor. The Egyptian has developed into more than just a beautiful horse to be shown on the line. Modern Egyptians have proven themselves to be wonderful trail mounts, capable jumpers and loving family horses who know how to take care of the youngest family members. The ability and desire to bond with their human counterparts is truly innate within the breed. The ancestors of today’s Egyptians lived alongside their owners in the tents and pavilions of the Bedouin people. These early horses were bred to be fierce in battle, yet gentle and tractable in the stable. I believe these qualities of bravery and trainability are what make the modern Egyptian the perfect mount for anyone looking to have a long and trusted relationship with their equine partner. I founded Roze Arabians Ltd. with the intent to produce Egyptian Arabians who possess all the qualities of their ancestors and with talent and durability to meet the demands of today’s sport horse enthusiasts. We strive to find horses that are versatile and able to excel in multiple disciplines Arabian was originally intended and incorporate them into our breeding program.

He is performance tested in dressage and has also done some eventing and NATRC rides. Sterling passes on his size, large bone, calm temperament, and beautiful movement. He is heterozygous grey and can produce black and bay offspring. He crosses well with WB, TB, and Arabian mares, and his Shagya daughter is ATA approved. His offspring have won the USDF Breeders Series West Coast current year foal Champion for 2 years, the 2013 CA Dressage Society Stallion of the Year in hand, and the USDF All-Breed awards for Shagya in-hand. Sterling’s paternal grandsire, Shagal, was a 2 time European Shagya-Arabian Champion. His maternal grand-sire, *Oman, sired a Tevis and Haggin’s Cup champion and comes from the highly successful jumping line of Bajar. Excellent semen quality. SCID, CA clear. We are currently focusing on doing endurance and eventing with our mares. Young stock for sale.

competing in the very first dressage test and class over fences offered at “East Coast” way back in the 70s as a junior rider when my father was instrumental in fostering these classes. Fast forward to 2002, the last time AHA held our Sport Horse classes at the “Big Nationals” in Louisville, Kentucky. We were competing at 2:30 am over fences because our sport horse entries had outgrown the show schedule! Then in 2003, I was honored to compete and earn multi Top Tens at the very first inaugural AHA Sport Horse Nationals in Lexington, Virginia! I am proud to be among those that can say, “It has been an incredible journey”. We’ve come a long way, baby! A special thank you to all who have contributed so much over so many years to advance the Arabian Sport Horse Industry to where we are today.

WineGlass Farm has been dedicated to the equine business for over 30 years. WineGlass horses have extensive pedigrees of proven performance for the professional competitor with excellent dispositions for the family sport horse. Our horses have well rounded, cross-discipline backgrounds ranging from polocrosse, distance riding, dressage, jumping and even some calf roping and reining! Our foundation mares, or their dams, have been performance tested. Soundness, trainability, willing attitude and competitive ability are genetically determined and we picked our mares to fit those qualities. The addition of Our Shagya stallion *BUDAPEST in 1990 complemented our foundation mares’ genetic potential. As an individual, *BUDAPEST has brought excellent bone, frame, movement and personality to the WineGlass program. Today *Budapest progeny offer the same qualities of toughness, stamina, rideability and courage that made the Shagya horses admired and desired so many years ago on the famous military stud farms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. *BUDAPEST is one of the few Shagya stallions in the U.S. to have easily completed the stallion performance standards established by the International Shagya Society (ISG). *BUDAPEST is still the only purebred Shagya stallion to receive USDF All-Breed recognition. Achievements of WineGlass progeny include AHA National and Regional Championships in endurance, competitive and sport horse in-hand. AERC careers with over 1,000’s of miles and numerous PShR Specialty and Specialty Plus accomplishments. To remain current in today’s sport horse community, Linda and Olivia are active at the FEI endurance level and as international ISG Shagya judges. We always look forward to the next generation and invite you to visit to see for yourself.
