Total regional impact is the total value of an event to the local economy including direct and indirect spending. HOW is Total regional Impact calculated? Total regional impact is calculated using an industry output factor multiplied by direct attendee spending. Direct attendee spending is determined by multiplying the total number of event attendees by direct spending factor per attendee. The direct attendee spending factor for conventions is based on average attendee length of stay of just less than four days. However, the figure varies depending on actual event duration and attendee length of stay. Attendance projections are provided to the Corporation by the event planner or show manager. How is total regional impact different from total economic impact? Beginning in 2015, the San Diego Convention Center Corporation has started using a more conservative multiplier to estimate regional impact from events at the facility. The revised Economic and Fiscal Revenue Analysis of San Diego Visitors conducted by CIC Research yielded an output multiplier of 1.69 in order to more accurately reflect the regional impact from direct attendee spending. The new multiplier has also been adopted by the San Diego Tourism Authority allowing for a consistent approach across the visitor industry of San Diego.

Medical Meetings Summary

Medical meetings are estimated to generate $421 million in regional impact from 16 events in 2015.The medical meetings market is highly competitive as they typically have larger budgets, perform well in economic downturns and their attendees often times extend their stay to enjoy all the host city has to offer.

Direct Attendee Spending One of the major benefits the convention center brings to San Diego is out-of-town visitors who spend significant sums for accommodations, dining, entertainment, shopping and other needs. Event organizers also spend money for products and services to organize and produce their events. More than $600 million is forecast to be spent in 2015, creating a positive cycle of economic activity for local San Diego businesses.

Tax revenues

More than $21 million is expected to be generated in 2015. Convention attendees fuel hotel room tax and sales tax revenues that in turn, help to reduce the tax burden on local taxpayers. It also helps the city to pay for services like police and fire protection, libraries and parks and beach and street maintenance.

Tax revenues help pay for police and fire protection

Attendance Approximately 849,950 guests are forecast to

attend events in 2015. This includes 544,074 primary event attendees as well as 305,876 locals who are secondary event attendees coming to the Center for community, consumer and other San Diego-based events. This year marks our highest attendance figures since 2008 and current figures are expected to increase as the year progresses.

JOBS The direct spending associated with conventions and meetings rolls into all areas of the local economy and creates and ecosystem of jobs in San Diego. There are approximately 12,500 jobs throughout the San Diego region directly connected to, or indirectly supported by conventions held in our facility.

HOTEL ROOM NIGHTS In 2015, the convention center is forecasting nearly

690,000 room nights to be utilized by convention attendees as part of the contracted room blocks arranged in advance by meeting planners. Industry studies have suggested approximately 30-40% of attendees stay at hotels not associated with the contracted hotel room block. The method by which the San Diego Convention Center calculates hotel room night numbers, consistent with industry practices, is based on estimates provided to us by clients at the time of booking. This does not take into account the amount of additional rooms that are booked out of the contracted room nights.
