ABOUT THE LADY WARRIORS

HOW THEY GOT HERE

No. 7 Midland University earned an automatic bid to the National Championship final site in Sioux City by winning the 2015 GPAC Postseason Tournament. The Lady Warriors only dropped one set throughout their title run. Midland swept (RV) Doane College in the quarterfinals, defeated No. 9 Hastings College in four sets and dispensed of No. 16 Concordia University in straight sets in the championship match. The Warriors have been assigned to Pool F of the National Tournament field alongside No. 6 Vanguard University (Calif.), No. 19 Southern Oregon University and No. 22 College of Coastal Georgia.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Midland is making just its third-ever appearance at the National Championship, but the Warriors have become a staple in Sioux City in recent years. This smarks the third straight season that Midland has earned a bye to the final site of the tournament as Coach Giesselmann has turned the Warriors into a perennial national contender. Midland has an all-time record of 3-5 at the National Championship, earning all three wins in 2013 en route to the ‘Elite 8’. That season, Midland was eliminated by the eventual National Champion, University of Texas-Brownsville, in four sets. The Warriors were swept in pool play last season, having been assigned to arguably the toughest pool; which was the only pool to not advance a three-match winner to the final bracket. Midland lost in five sets to No. 15 Georgetown College and No. 24 College of Idaho before being eliminated in four sets by No. 3 Concordia University (Calif.). Coach Giesselmann owns a 24-16 career record over six appearances at the National Tournament.

BESTING THE BEST

Entering the National Championship, Midland owns a 16-3 record in 2015 against teams that have been ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll at the time of the match. That mark included eight of the Warriors’ 13 non-conference opponents, and six in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Among Midland’s biggest non-conference wins were a sweep of then-No. 10 Columbia College and a five-set thriller over then-No. 5 Rocky Mountain College. The GPAC was arguably the toughest conference in the NAIA this season, having the most teams ranked or receiving votes in every release of the Coaches’ Poll this year. Midland went 13-3 in conference play this season, matching the program record (2013) for the most wins in GPAC play.

HOW SWEEP IT IS

The Lady Warriors have racked up 19 sweeps this season which is tied for the all-time record in program history. The 2013 Midland squad also amassed 19 straight-set victories. On the flip side, the Warriors were only swept once this year, and a total of just three times over the past three seasons.

LEADERS OF THE ‘PAC

Midland had a total of six players named to the 2015 GPAC Volleyball All-Conference Team. Middle blocker Priscilla O’Dowd was named the GPAC Freshman of the Year, and Paul Giesselmann shared Coach of the Year Honors (with Chad Hanson – Dordt and Scott Matters – Concordia). Nicole Venditte was named the GPAC Assistant Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. O’Dowd is the first player in program history to win the rookie honor. Ashlee Harms was named to the All-GPAC First Team for the third straight season, and KC Heimann netted First Team honors for the first time in her career after being named to the Second Team the previous two seasons. Freshman Jessica Peters was also named to the First Team, marking the fifth straight season a Warriors setter was billed as the best in the GPAC (previously Megan Farley – 4x). Darcy Barry and Molly Pettit each garnered All-GPAC Honorable Mention in 2015. Barry was recognized for the first time in her career, having thrived this year as Midland’s starting libero. She ranked 10th in the GPAC in digs (436) and service aces (35), recording career bests in both categories. Barry’s dig total this season ranks eighth all-time in Warrior history.

EVENT CENTER ELECTRICITY

Midland volleyball has not only grown at the national level, but become a staple on campus and in the Fremont community. The Warriors drew a total of 13,901 fans over 13 home matches this season at the Midland Event Center. Over 1,300 Warrior fans packed the place on four occasions this year with a season-best crowd of 1,908 in attendance on October 14, 2015. The all-time attendance record for volleyball at the Event Center was set on October 23, 2013 with 2,027 fans.

TOP 10 AGAIN, AND AGAIN

On September 10, 2013 Midland University moved up the rankings from No. 13 to No. 8 in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. The Warriors then held a Top 10 rating for 18 straight releases of the poll before falling to No. 11 on October 14, 2014. In 2015, Midland was ranked in the Top 10 in 11 of 12 released of the poll, only slipping outside to No. 11 on one occasion. The Warriors held the No. 2 position in the October 13th release, marking the highest ranking in program history. Midland has been ranked in the Top 25 Poll in all but one release since Week 1 of the 2012 season (Final Poll).

ABOUT THE LADY WARRIORS

OUT OF HARMS WAY

2015 SENIOR CLASS NO SENIORITIS

Five Midland seniors will be playing their final collegiate matches at this year’s National Tournament - Jordyn Bymers, Ashlee Harms, Brooke Peterson, Molly Pettit and Katie Thomas. That group helped guide the Warriors to four straight conference tournaments, including the championship match in three consecutive seasons, winning the GPAC title twice (2013 & ’15). The 2015 senior class enters Nationals with a combined 111-30 record and contributed to a pair of 22-match winning streaks in their careers.

CATCH 22

In 2013, Midland started the season red-hot and put together a 22-match winning streak. That unprecedented feat appeared to be untouchable, as the previous record was only 10 straight matches. However, the 2015 Lady Warriors burst out of the gates and proceeded to tie the record with 22 consecutive wins. Midland’s bid to break the record was halted though in five sets by then-No. 17 Concordia University (Neb.). That loss sent the Warriors on a threematch losing skid, their longest since 2010. Midland rebounded though, and has since won seven streak matches entering the National Tournament.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Thirteen Midland University sports were recognized by the NAIA this past summer as 2014-15 Scholar-Teams, including the Warrior Volleyball Team. The Lady Warriors ranked second among Midland teams with a 3.62 cumulative GPA, which tied for fifth nationally compared to other NAIA volleyball programs. Midland’s volleyball team also accrued the highest GPA in the conference. For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade-point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes. Midland also earned the AVCA Team Academic Award in the 2014-15 season. Both Ashlee Harms and Katie Thomas were individually named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes last year. Additionally, Harms was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in 2014 & ’15.

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

Seniors Ashlee Harms and Molly Pettit, along with junior Anna Grovijohn, are Midland’s Team Captains, as selected by their peers and coaching staff.

@Midland_Sports

Outside hitter Ashlee Harms will close out her stellar Warrior career at the National Tournament. She ranked seventh in the GPAC this season with 356 kills, tied for eighth with 93 blocks and was 13th with a .226 hitting percentage. Harms enters Nationals ranked fourth all-time in Midland history with 1,131 kills. She is also in the Warrior Top 10 in block assists (1st – 337), hitting percentage (7th – .220) and solo blocks (T8th – 43). Her 356 kills and 81 block assists this year each rank 10th all-time in a single season at Midland. The three-time All-GPAC First Team representative eclipsed the 1,000 kill mark for her career on October 7th vs. Nebraska Wesleyan University. Harms has been named the GPAC Volleyball Attacker of the Week four times in her career. A model student-athlete, Harms has twice been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Distrtict Team for her combined effort in the classroom and on the court. Academic All-Americans will be named at the conclusion of the National Championship.

DYNAMIC DUO

Freshmen Priscilla O’Dowd (MB) and Jessica Peters (S) lived up to their billing as the highlights of Midland’s Class of 2019. The duo was previously teammates at Papillion LaVista High School in Omaha, Nebraska. The last set of high school teammates to join the Warriors was Megan Farley and Mackenzie Scheef, (Syracuse H.S.) who coincidently also played at setter and middle blocker. Scheef capped her career at Midland as a 2013 Second Team AllAmerican, and Farley was named a Second Team All-American in 2013 & 2014. O’Dowd, the 2015 GPAC Freshman of the Year, led the team in blocks (169), hitting percentage (.383) and kills (421). She ranked second in the GPAC in blocks and hitting percentage, and was third this season in kills. Additionally, O’Dowd ranked sixth in the NAIA in blocks and hitting percentage. Her 151 block assists in 2015 set a new Warrior single-season record. Peters ranked third in the GPAC with 1,234 set assists, which is fourth all-time in Midland single-season history entering Nationals. Her 10.7 assists per game rank 15th in the NAIA this year.

MILESTONE MARCH

Junior KC Heimann floored her 1,000th career kill on October 2nd against Mount Marty College. The outside hitter enters Nationals ranked third in kills (1,143) in Warrior history, and appears poised to become the all-time record holder as a senior next year. Senior Jordyn Bymers currently ranks third all-time in Midland history with 137 career service aces. Fellow senior Molly Pettit also eclipsed a milestone this season, surpassing 1,500 career digs. She currently ranks third all-time in that category (1,636) and is ninth all-time with 84 career service aces. Pettit, a four-year starter, has played in 141 career matches, tying her with Megan Farley on the career list among Midland’s Top 5.

HOME GROWN TALENT

Midland’s full roster consists of 27 student-athletes, 24 of whom originate from the state of Nebraska. The only other states represented on the Warriors’ roster are Iowa (2) and North Dakota (1). Fifteen of the 16 players on the National Championship roster originate from the Husker state.

Founded in 1883, Midland University is the product of college and church mergers. Midland College was established in Atchison, Kansas, by the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 15, 1887. The name Midland College was selected because of its central location in the United States. In 1919, the college moved to Fremont, Nebraska. The Fremont property had previously been called Fremont Normal School and Business College. In 1962, Midland merged with Luther Junior College (founded in Wahoo, Nebraska, in 1883). Midland College then became Midland Lutheran College, and finally, in 2010, Midland Lutheran College became Midland University. History of the Midland Warriors Midland University’s history is rooted in multiple institutions, each of which has left its mark on the school and on its mascot. Midland College was first located in Atchison, Kansas, where it was founded by German and Swedish immigrants. The first mascot they selected was the “Tigers,” along with the official colors orange and black. The college was relocated to Fremont in 1919, and the mascot was changed to the “Warriors” in recognition of a theme tied more closely to the history of the founders. Luther College later merged with Midland College in 1962 to create Midland Lutheran College. The Luther College “Vikings” sported blue as their school color prior to the merge. For many years, the Warrior mascot was personified through imagery of a Native American Warrior. This was recognized to be a misfit, however, as Midland’s past was actually routed in European ancestry, and just the name “Warriors” was used without any additional icon. Feeling the absence of a living, breathing figure that appropriately represented the school on and off the field, various warrior types were used in short spurts ranging from “Melvin the Midland Monster” from the early 1990’s to Leonidas, a more recent Spartan Warrior. In 2010, amid Midland Lutheran College’s refounding as Midland University, a new icon was created to reflect Midland’s Nordic history, incorporating both the Luther College Viking blue and the Midland Warrior orange and black. This new Nordic Warrior provides a connection to Midland’s heritage while offering a modern symbol of the strength and determination Midland University student-athletes display as Warriors. Throughout Midland University’s proud history, many changes have taken place. Whether you are connected to Midland from the past, the present, or in the years to come, one thing remains the same. The heart of a Warrior is present in all who call Midland their own.

GIESSELMANN

6th Season • 145-60 Overall; 124-35 GPAC The 2015 campaign will mark Paul Giesselmann’s sixth season as head coach of the Warrior volleyball program. Under his guidance, since arriving in 2010, Midland has posted a 145-60 record and won a pair of GPAC postseason championships. Giesselmann entered the 2015 season with a 343-137 career record as an NAIA head coach. His .715 winning percentage is the 15th best among active volleyball coaches, and those 343 wins rank 19th. Midland appeared in its third straight GPAC postseason title match in 2015, claiming the championship for the second time in two years. This season also marks the Warriors third straight (third all-time) trip to Nationals, all with Giesselmann at the helm. Midland ranked as high as No. 2 in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll in 2015, setting a new high-water mark in program history. In 2013, the Warriors set a new school record with 37 wins, including a 22-match winning streak (tied in 2015) to begin the year which shatterred Midland’s previous mark of 10 set in 1995. Their 13 GPAC wins set a new instituational record (also matched in 2015). Midland was ranked as high as No. 5 during the season in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. Midland won the 2013 GPAC Postseaon Tournament, earning an automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. The Warriors went 2-1 in pool play to advance to the final bracket where they beat conference rival Northwestern (3-1) before falling to the eventual National Champions, University of Texas at Brownsville (3-1) in the “Elite 8”. Midland was ranked No. 7 in the Postseason Coaches Poll. They posted an 8-3 regular season record against teams who qualified for the National Tournament and also went 8-3 against teams who were ranked in the preseason, at the time of the match, or were ranked in the Final Top 25 Poll. In Giesselmann’s previous three years as head coach, the Warriors nearly tripled their GPAC wins total and went from having an eight-win season in 2009 to finishing with 21 wins in 2011 and 2012. Under Giesselmann’s direction, the 2012 team appeared in the semifinal round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament. They also had five postseason award winners, earned 11 GPAC victories and were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll throughout the season for the first time in school history. Additionally, Giesselmann has helped to cultivate success off the court, with his teams winning the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award in three consecutive seasons. Giesselmann joined the Warriors in 2010 after coaching at Creighton University since 2003. At Creighton, Giesselmann served as Creighton’s recruiting coordinator while working heavily with individual on-court training. During his time at Creighton, Giesselmann worked closely with and helped develop the institution’s first two AllAmericans at middle blocker: Kelly Goc and Jessica Hotus. With his recommendations, Creighton offered and signed the top prep players in Nebraska and the Midwest to complete eight top-notch recruiting classes. Creighton’s seven selections to the MVC All-Freshman Team in the last seven years are tied for second-most leaguewide, and the Jays became one of two schools in league history with multiple All-Freshman team picks in consecutive seasons (2004 and 2005). Prior to his service at Creighton, Giesselmann was Head Coach at College of St. Mary from 1994-2001. There he earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and Region Coach of the Year accolades in 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He

also claimed Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in seven straight seasons from 1995-2001. As the College of St. Mary’s all-time winningest coach, Giesselmann led the Flames to a number-two national ranking in 2001 and four national tournament appearances finishing in the NAIA Elite Eight twice and the NAIA Final Four in 2000.
