Installing the French edition of Dragon NaturallySpeaking® v10.1 for use in bilingual English/French environments Click here for the current Bilingual French/English Editions of Dragon for Windows. The French edition of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred includes all the features of both the French and the English versions. It is not necessary to install the English-only edition on computers that have been equipped with the French edition. There are some specific steps required to switch the interface between the two languages, and this document will explain how English-Speaking users can install the French edition and switch the interface from its French default to English. The software can be switched between the two languages at any time - even as a user is dictating within a single page onscreen. The first challenge for an English-Speaking user is navigating through the initial installation of the software, during which all the onscreen prompts appear in French. Here are the typical steps to follow: 1.

Insert the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred French DVD disc.

If the installation doesn't start automatically, locate the "Setup.exe" file and double-click it.

3.

Wait until the "Suivant >" button on the Welcome (Bienvenue) screen becomes active. This could take a few seconds. Then click the "Suivant >" button.

Enter a user name in the "Nom utilisateur:" box, and your Organization name in the "Organisation:" box as well as the serial number from your Dragon disc envelope (your IT Administrator may have this information).

In many cases, the standard installation is sufficient. It is possible to designate an installation location other than the local "C:" drive. To do that, click the "Modifier..." button and browse to a different directory.

If hard drive space for the application is extremely limited, it is possible to slightly reduce the size of the installation by using a custom installation (Installation personnalisée). Most of the files are required for a bilingual installation, but the British English (Anglais britannique) pronunciation information could optionally be excluded from the installation. Most Canadian English speakers use the "American English" (Anglais américain) pronunciation models. This would save about 200 MB of disk space out of the usual total of 1690 MB. In general we suggest that the standard install (Installation standard) be used, rather than the custom option.

10. Click the "Suivant >" button. We generally recommend leaving the "Quick Start" feature unchecked (Activer l'option Démarrage rapide pour...). Quick Start loads part of the program code into memory whenever the computer is booted, and adds a microphone icon to the System Tray. This allows easier access to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and reduces the time required for the software to load when a user is ready to begin dictation. By leaving Quick Start unchecked, you will allow more of the computer's RAM to be used by other applications when Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not loaded.

11. Click the "Installer" button. The installation will take 15 minutes or more, depending on the speed of the DVD-ROM drive and/or the local network.

12. Click the "Terminer" button. Once the installation is complete, there will be a Dragon NaturallySpeaking icon on the desktop, and the following items will be added to the "All Programs" portion of the Start Menu. For diagnostic purposes, the Dragon Log can be accessed by selecting "Afficher le fichier journal Dragon" from the submenu. The Installation log can be accessed by selecting "Afficher le fichier journal d'installation".

Switching from French to English (and back again)... In order to switch between languages in Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred French, there must be at least one user file set up for each language. If the preferred "default" language will be English, we suggest that an English user file be created immediately after installation and prior to the deployment of the master image to other computers. Dragon NaturallySpeaking remembers the language that was used the last time the software was run. Once an English user file has been created, the software will continue to launch with its English interface until the next time a French user file is loaded. The first time Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred French is run after installation, it will launch using its French interface. Here are the steps to follow to create an English user file at first launch: 1.

Double-click the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.1 icon on the desktop.

Users of the OSAPAC release of Dragon will need to click the green "Démarrer Dragon NaturallySpeaking" button in order to launch the Dragon program.

Enter a user name into the "Nom:" box. It's a good idea to include the language in your user name i.e. "Claudette Smith English"

Select "US English" from the drop-down "Langue:" menu. Do not choose UK English unless you actually speak with a British accent.

Leave the "Accent:" set to "Général".

6.

If you are using a microphone plugged into the regular sound input and output jacks on the computer, leave the "Source de dictée:" set to the default setting. If your microphone connects to the PC with a USB plug, select "Microphone USB" from the drop-down menu.

Leave the "Vocabulaire:" set to "General" for adult voices. Click the "Aucun" button to select the quickest user enrolment option.

Click "Suivant >" to continue the user setup process.

At this point the software will switch to its English interface and you should follow the remaining prompts to set the microphone volume:

Uncheck "Run Accuracy Tuning…". Click "Don't run Data Collecting…".

Click "Begin dictating". Click Next.

Click "OK". Note: If Microsoft Office or Corel WordPerfect are installed before Dragon, the Natural Language commands for those programs will be activated automatically.

After the interface has been switched to English, it is possible to delete the English user file and the software will still remember to open up in English the next time it is run. To delete the user file, open the "NaturallySpeaking" menu, select "Close User" to close any open file, select "Manage Users...", select the user file to be deleted and click the "Delete" button.

Switching back to English when Dragon NaturallySpeaking French opens with its French interface. 1.

Click the green "Démarrer Dragon NaturallySpeaking" button.
