Mayor�Ken�Hewitt's�Message Through� Haldimand� County’s� new� Rethink� Your Waste� promotion� strategy,� staff� are� encouraging residents� to� make� better� disposal� decisions� by avoiding� the� garbage� can� and� considering� how waste� can� be� reduced,� reused� or� recycled� instead. Whether� it� be� using� the� blue� and� black� box� for recycling�paper�and�containers,�buying�only�what�you need� from� the� grocery� store,� raking� leaves� into� a yard� waste� bag,� setting� up� a� backyard� composter, attending�a�hazardous�waste�event,�or�even�recycling a� computer–� there� are� many� methods� that� can prevent�waste�from�going�to�landfill.�Reducing�our consumption,�recycling�more,�reusing�what�we�can�and�disposing�less�is�the�mentality that�will�help�preserve�our�soils,�air�and�ecosystems�for�our�children,�grandchildren�and future�generations. A Message from the General Manager of Public Works 2016�was�a�busy�year�for�the�County,�especially�in�Waste�Management.�Staff�worked�diligently to�roll�out�a�new�Rethink�Your�Waste�promotion�strategy,�facilitate�the�introduction�of�a�new waste�and�recycling�curbside�collector�(Modern�Corporation),�and�develop�new�ways�of�reducing our�eco-footprint. Rethink�Your�Waste�promotions�–�delivered�to�residents�through�brochures,�newspaper�ads, social�media,�placed�on�truck�placards,� and�more�–�provided�information�on�reduction�initiatives and�key�changes�to�assist �residents�in�diverting�waste�from�landfills. �In�conjunction�with�the new�collection�contract,�Haldimand�has�been�working�with�multi-residential�buildings�in�an attempt�to�service�more�residents�and�divert�more�waste. In�November,�Haldimand�County�Council�passed�a�new�by-law�(1736-16)�for�The�Collection of� Waste,� Recyclables� and� Other� Materials.� Waste� Management� staff� worked� diligently� to implement�the�by-law,�to�protect�the�health�and�welfare�of�people,�and�decrease�nuisances by�regulating�and�monitoring�the�collection,�handling�and�disposal�of�waste�and�recyclable material�throughout�the�County.

  Staff�have�continued�with�the�closure�activities�related�to�the�Tom�Howe�Landfill�and�residents will�notice�a�diversion�center�at�the�Canborough�Transfer�Station�to�promote�and�allow�for�more waste�diversion�than�ever�before.

Want�to�recycle�something�that�isn't�picked�up�curbside? Electronics Recycling Is�anything�with�a�plug�considered�a�recyclable electronic�in�Haldimand's�program?   Unfortunately,� the� simple� answer� in� NO.� Ontario� Electronic� Stewardship� (OES) is� a� not� for� profit� organization� that� oversees� government� approved� end-of-life electronics� recycling� in� Ontario� and� is� funded� through� Environmental� Handling Fees�(EHF).�This�means�the�program�will�only�accept�electronics�where�handling fees� are� applied� which� ultimately� cover� recycling� costs� upon� purchase.� For example,�if�you�purchase�a�new�television�in�Ontario�you�will�pay�and�EHF�and free�recycling�options�are�available.�However,�if�you�buy�a�vacuum�there�are�not EHF�associated�with�this�purchase�and�therefore�this�material�will�not�be�accepted in�this�program. What's Flowing Into Your Sewers? It� is� important� to� keep� our� storm� sewers� and� sanitary sewers�free�of�contaminated�substances�and�unnecessary waste.�This�will�help�to�ensure�proper�treatment�and�water quality�of�our�receiving�waters.    

Guidance�Notes�for�Your�Sanitary�Sewer�Connections:

Haldimand�County�Sewer�Use�By-law�1443/14: • No�other�connections�from�the�property�to�the�sanitary�sewer�other�than sanitary�waste. • No�connected�eaves�troughs,�sump�pumps,�or�foundation�drains. • These�types�of�connections�increase�flow�to�the�sewers�causing�potential surcharging�of�sewers�and�basement�flooding�during�high�rainfall�or snow�melt�events.

Think�Before�You�Flush!

When�these�items�are�flushed�down�the�toilet�they�can�cause�problems in�our�homes,�wastewater�treatment�facilities�and�the�environment: • Food�waste�such�as�fats,�oils,�and�greases; • Personal�hygiene�products; • Baby�wipes�and�diapers; • Pharmaceutical�products; • Dental�floss,�cotton�swabs,�Band-Aids,�Q-tips; • Hazardous�chemicals�from�around�the�house; • Cat�litter�and�cigarette�butts.

Items�that�do�not�go�into�the�storm�sewer: • Liquids�with�two�or�more�separate�layers�or having�a�visible�film�or�sheen�such�as�grease and�oils; • Swimming�pool�water; • Dye�or�coloured�materials; • Paint�and�paint�by-products; • Biomedical�waste; • Any�type�of�fuel�or�mixed�fuels; • And�sewage�or�reactive�waste.

Levels�can�change�throughout�the�summer�so�be�sure�to�check�your�local�newspaper�or access�By-law�No.�1420-14�for�any�water�use�restrictions�that�may�occur�in�your�area.

Yard Waste Collection  

Yard�Waste�is�collected�on�your�regular�collection�day�only�in�the urban�areas�of�Caledonia,�Cayuga,�Dunnville,�Hagersville,�Jarvis and�Townsend�at�curbside�according�to�the�following�schedule:  April�24�-�May�27,�2017�(5�Weeks) October�16�-�November�24,�2017�(6�Weeks)   Acceptable�Containers: Place�weeds,�plant�trimmings�and�leaves�in�paper�yard�bags.�No�plastic�bags please!�Bundle�branches�as�shown�below.�There�is�no�bag�limit�for�yard�waste as� long� as� acceptable� containers� are� used.� Missed� your� scheduled� yard� waste collection?�Bring�it�to�the�Canborough�Waste�Management�Facility�for�disposal.   Items�NOT Accepted�in�Your�Yard�Waste:�Kitchen�scraps,�grass�clippings, rocks,� dirt,� sod,� tree� stumps,� larger� branches,� flower� pots/trays,� wood� and� pet waste.�You�may�dispose�of�these�materials�at�the�Canborough�Waste�Management Facility.

Meet Your New Hauler! Please�welcome�Modern�Corporation,�the�County's�new�waste�and�recycling�hauler�since�October�2016! Please�call�Modern�at�1-844-624-3126�for�all�your�curbside�waste�and�recycling�needs. Last� year,� Haldimand� County� awarded� Modern� Corporation� with� the curbside�collection�contract�for�garbage�and�recycling.�Modern�haulers�will be�stopping�at�just�over�20,200�stops�each�week�to�collect�garbage�and recycling�across�the�entire�County.

Overall�the�company�has�done�a�great�job�at�transitioning�into�the�new�role and�will�continue�to�work�closely�with�our�Waste�Management�division�to continuously�make�service�more�efficient�and�improve�the�way�Haldimand County�reduces�their�waste.

Backyard Composting! Backyard�composting�is�a�simple�way�to�reduce�the�amount�of�waste�at�the�curb each�week.�This�process�turns�kitchen�scraps�and�yard�waste�into�a�dark,�nutrientrich�soil�for�your�garden.�By�returning�nutrients�back�to�the�soil,�compost�reduces the�need�for�expensive�fertilizers. You�may�purchase�a�composter�at�the�Canborough Waste�Management�Facility,�Dunnville�Multi-Purpose Building�or�Hagersville�and�Caledonia�Satellite�Offices.

    How�to�get�started? • Purchase�a�backyard�composter�from�Haldimand�County�for�a subsidized�price • Alternate�wet�kitchen�scraps�and�dry�yard�material. • Chop�or�shred�materials�up�before�you�add�them�to�composter�-�this will�speed�up�decomposition. • Composter�contents�should�be�moist�like�a�damp�sponge. • Composting�in�the�winter�is�OK,�the�process�just�slows�down�and�will speed�up�again�in�the�warmer�months.   How�to�ensure�your�compost�doesn’t�smell�unpleasant? • Bad�Odour?�Turn�to�aerate�and�add�dry�materials�to�the�pile�if�it�is�too wet. • Insects�or�Rodents?�Do�not�add�meat,�fish�or�fatty�foods�to�composter and�cover�with�new�soil. • Compost�too�wet?�Add�dry�leaves,�shredded�paper�or�even�relocate to�an�area�with�proper�drainage. • Pile�Not�Heating�or�Smells�Sweet?�Add�grass�clippings�or�manure.

Managing Cottage Waste

Waste�is�always�a�mystery�for�seasonal�cottage�owners�and�renters�around�the�lakeshore area.�Waste�programs�differ�between�municipal�boundaries�and�therefore�not�all�garbage and�recycling�is�treated�the�same�in�comparison�to�where�they�live�full�time.�But�have�no fear!�Haldimand�County�Waste�Management�is�here�help�those�that�own�and�rent�along�the lake.�Below�are�some�tips�to�help�you�manage�your�cottage�waste:   Blue�&�Black�Box�Recycling  • Use�both�your�blue�and�black�recycling�bins�to�separate�recyclable�containers�and�fibres�-�there�is�no�limit�to how�much�recycling�you�set�out! • Set�out�recycling�no�earlier�than�7:00�pm�the�night�before�your�regular�collection�day. • All�bins�should�be�brought�in�by�7:00�pm�on�your�regular�collection�day.�Please�ask�a�neighbour�to�bring�in your�bins�if�you�will�not�be�home�OR�use�clear�bags�to�separate�and�contain�your�recycling. Battery Recycling Haldimand� County� partnered� with� Canadian� Tire� in Dunnville� and� diverted� 3,394� pounds  of� batteries from� the� landfill� in� 2016!� Through� RMC's� municipal battery�funding�program�the�County�received�$848.50 from� battery� diversion� efforst� last� year.� All� funding was  donated� to� Victim� Services� through� Haldimand County's�Charitable�Donations�Committee.

Winter Weather Delays Collection�may�be�affected when�weather�packs�a�punch!  

Snow,� ice� and� wind� can� affect  curbside� collection.� Snow� and� ice� make otherwise�‘flat’�roads�and�lanes�difficult�for�the�trucks�to�navigate�safely, while�hills�can�be�nearly�impossible�to�service�without�the�risk�of�property damage.� Wind� can� also� be� treacherous,� creating� roadblocks� or� hazards involving�overhead�lines.
