A Roadmap for Success The Detroit region is flipping the narrative of economic progress. Today, nearly a decade after the Great Recession, our communities are growing, anchored by responsible and collaborative government leadership, billions of dollars in private sector investments, world-class universities and health institutions, and a rich ecosystem of tech and mobility entrepreneurs eager to create the next big thing. The 11-county region continues to outpace the nation in several key areas, but there is still work to do. Together with the business and philanthropic communities, Forward Detroit’s goal is to ensure the region is educated, employed and healthy to compete in the 21st century global economy. This report highlights the successes of Forward Detroit’s economic initiatives in the past year.

Strategy to Position the Region for Global Competitiveness Forward Detroit, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s economic development strategy, is built to ensure the 11-county Detroit region is educated, employed and healthy to compete in the 21st century global economy. To cultivate the existing talent pipeline and market the region as a desirable place for new talent to live, work and play, Forward Detroit is focused on education reform, access to and retaining students in higher education institutions, and maintaining Michigan’s leadership in patent development.

AFFORDABLE ENROLLMENT Detroit Drives Degrees strengthens the talent pipeline by advancing access to postsecondary education, boosting student success, and retaining and attracting talent. Macomb, Oakland and Wayne county schools participated in Detroit Drives Degrees’ first “Race to the FAFSA Line” Challenge during the 2016-2017 school year.

There was $90 million in federal aid that went unclaimed in Michigan last year. To put this funding into the hands of students, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) unlocks thousands of dollars in Pell Grants.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Comprised of presidents and provosts of community colleges and universities charged with setting the regionwide strategy for education attainment.

The Detroit Promise offers a tuition-free path to postsecondary education for eligible Detroitresident students graduating from a Detroit high school. Between the 2015 and 2016 academic years, the Detroit Promise saw a 10 percent increase in students enrolled in higher education institutions with the expansion into four-year universities.

417 Detroit Promise students were connected to one-on-one support to help them adjust, navigate and remain enrolled in college through the Campus Coach program.

CONNECTING OUR REGION Leading business voice for the Regional Transit Authority’s (RTA) Master Plan and key partner in Citizens for Connecting Our Communities, a coalition of more than 200 business, labor and government leaders.

CARE STORY

HealthForward launched this year to convene health care leaders to drive economic development and improve wellness outcomes. Through stakeholder meetings, HealthForward has begun to identify areas where the business community can make an impact on technology, innovation, and improving the health and productivity of the workforce.

The Chamber served as a lead voice, along with a coalition of statewide economic development partners and support from Gov. Rick Snyder, to educate lawmakers on the importance of the Michigan Thrive Initiative. The legislation, which passed with bipartisan support, unleashes $5 billion in major brownfield redevelopment projects across the state. It is a critical component of Michigan’s long-term growth and is expected to catalyze a surge in population.

CONNECTIONS SUCCESS MICHauto’s Discover Auto career series connects students with leading universities in Michigan to promote the exciting, high-tech career opportunities that exist for engineers in the automotive industry. Over the past couple of years, more than 25 automotive suppliers and manufacturers have exposed nearly 1,000 students to the industry.

Collaborated with Mayor Mike Duggan and My Brother’s Keeper Alliance to connect young men of color in Detroit with regional employers who provided 300 full-time and 100 seasonal jobs during the “Pathways to Success” job fair.

The Chamber traveled across the globe for investment missions and hosted nine international delegations from seven countries to highlight the region’s revitalization, manufacturing and talent assets.

In partnership with Business Leaders for Michigan, MICHauto convened 300 global leaders from 12 countries to discuss how mobility can be leveraged to solve pressing societal challenges.

More then 35 automotive leaders from across the state participated in a discussion on challenges and opportunities for the industry with Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan at “Auto on the Island” during the Mackinac Policy Conference. Follow-up and action items have been established by MICHauto and KPMG.

MICHauto convened 30 automotive and mobility, government and philanthropic leaders monthly in support of the city of Detroit’s mobility transformation plan.

SECURING THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY MICHauto partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) to launch a marketing campaign to promote the collective mobility efforts and innovation across Michigan. Positioning Michigan as the leader in connected and automated vehicle policies, MICHauto was a lead voice educating policy makers on the SAVE Act and supported the MEDC and Ann Arbor SPARK in the creation of the American Center for Mobility. The Chamber, in partnership with the MEDC and WeWork Detroit, created the PlanetM Landing Zone in Detroit to help secure Michigan’s future as the center of the North American automotive industry. The Landing Zone will allow natural collisions to occur between global mobility startups and Michigan’s traditional automotive industry.
