EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S LETTER Dear Friends-

Have you ever seen that bumper sticker “Midwives help people out”? It’s my favorite because, yes, midwives love catching sweet, wrinkly babies, but we also love helping mothers. It’s been said that midwifery, like the ministry, is a calling and it’s true. Service to women and their families is our work and “helping people out” is our calling. In Haiti, where the need for more midwives is so great, this calling is amplified. The calling burns

accepted into our 10th class. These women and men have a strong desire to serve and an ambition to improve the health of the mothers and babies in Haiti. I have no doubt that, with the support and training Midwives For Haiti offers, they will succeed.

Our staff and volunteers work incredibly hard to help people out. From managers to teachers to drivers and security guards, every single person on our team of 69, including 61 Haitians, is working to improve maternal and infant health in Haiti. Of course, none of

brightly in each of our 155 graduates and also the 30 new students that have been

this work on the frontlines or behind the scenes is possible without our faithful supporters. This annual report is a snapshot of our collective efforts in 2017 and I’m proud to share it with you.

Here are some of the highlights and our plans for 2018:

19,773 patient visits in the Central Plateau. Our programs are under constant review and we continue • In 2017, our five health intervention programs collectively provided

to adapt quickly to ensure we are operating at full capacity.

• We graduated 32 skilled birth attendants in Class 9. Skilled birth attendance is the single most critical intervention to save the lives of women and infants and with every SBA we train, she will care for an estimated 2,000 women and babies throughout her career. We’ve now trained 155 SBAs, about 20% of the skilled maternity providers working in Haiti. That’s

Mobile Prenatal Clinic numbers have nearly doubled within a year to 13,506

patient visits, an increase of 89%, and we must continue to meet the needs of these mothers. Our mobile clinic data is sent to Haiti’s Ministry of Health to help strengthen existing infrastructure as we work alongside the government.

• Our

10th class of SBAs begin in late March and we’ve extended the education

program to 14-months. They are an incredibly bright group and we are proud to welcome them to the Nadene Brunk Eads School.

• Our

310,000 safer births for the women and children of Haiti.

79 midwives, nurses, and doctors volunteered over 3,000 hours to support our

students and programs in 2017. We need volunteers to help in Haiti with our 10th class and have posted our 2018-2019 curriculum on our website.

• We continue to keep our U.S. overhead low and

89% of our total spending goes to our

programs in Haiti.

Our success is a testament to the people of Haiti who work tirelessly to change the story of maternal and child health in their country, and the foundations and individuals who believe such change is possible. In return for your support, we offer you commitment, transparency, and results.
