TITLE-GAME REMATCH Appalachian State and UMass are playing for just the second time, and the first meeting was a showdown for the FCS national title in 2006. Coached by Jerry Moore, the Mountaineers won that game 28-17 in Chattanooga, Tenn., to claim the second of their three consecutive titles from 2005-07. They defeated Northern Iowa in the 2005 championship game and Delaware in the 2007 championship game. When the Mountaineers and Minutemen squared off 11 years ago, running back Kevin Richardson helped App State cap a 14-1 season by rushing for 179 yards and four touchdowns. His 4-yard touchdown with 13:22 left broke a 14-all tie, and the Mountaineers led 21-17 before he scored a 1-yard TD with 1:51 remaining to finish a 14-play, 80-yard drive that lasted nearly seven minutes. UMass played its first FBS season in 2012, and App State started competing in the FBS in 2014. 2
ONE OF NATION’S BEST LAST 39 GAMES App State is 32-7 over its last 39 games, which is tied for the fourth-best mark in the country during that stretch. The Mountaineers won their last six games in their FBS debut in 2014, went 11-2 in 2015 and had a 10-3 record in 2016 to post backto-back seasons with double-figure victories. App State claimed a share of its first Sun Belt title and a second straight Camellia Bowl win in 2016. The losses during the 39-game stretch have come against Georgia, Clemson, Tennessee, Miami, Troy, Arkansas State and Wake Forest. At the time of those games, Clemson, Tennessee, Miami and Georgia were all nationally ranked.

SCORCHING RUN IN THE SUN BELT App State, which steps away from its league schedule this weekend, is 24-4 in conference play since joining the Sun Belt, including a 24-2 mark since starting 0-2 in 2014. During the 24-2 stretch, the Mountaineers are 12-1 at home and 12-1 on the road. QB IN ELITE COMPANY Senior QB Taylor Lamb leads active FBS quarterbacks with 45 career games played entering Saturday, and he’s 32-11 as a starter. He became App State’s career leader for touchdown passes, breaking a first-place tie with Armanti Edwards, when he threw his 75th and 76th TD passes during a 37-29 win last weekend against Coastal Carolina. With 1,624 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions this season, Lamb leads the Sun Belt Conference in yards per completion (12.99) and is 33rd nationally in passing efficiency (144.8). Of the 37 quarterbacks with at least 13 TD passes this year, only five have less than three interceptions. @appstatesports • @AppState_FB

SCOTT SATTERFIELD HEAD COACH FIFTH SEASON (37-20)
The Mountaineers ranked among the Sun Belt’s top two in 19 of the league’s 33 statistical categories during the season. Thirteen Mountaineers earned All-Sun Belt recognition under Satterfield’s tutelage in 2015, including a league-high-tying five first-team honorees and the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in defensive end Ronald Blair. Appalachian State’s historic 2015 campaign came on the heels of a breakout season in 2014, when Satterfield led the Mountaineers to an impressive 7-5 record in their first full season in the FBS ranks. That mark included a six-game winning streak to close the season, all in Sun Belt play. Eleven of Satterfield’s Mountaineers earned All-Sun Belt recognition in their first year in the conference, highlighted by first-team honorees Kendall Lamm and Doug Middleton and Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Taylor Lamb. Satterfield was named Appalachian State’s 20th head coach on Dec. 14, 2012. He is only the sixth Appalachian alumnus to ever serve in the role, joining Graydon Eggers ‘24 (1928), Francis Hoover ‘40 (1945), Press Mull ‘47 (1951), Bob Broome ‘40 (195658) and Carl Messere ‘61 (1965-70) Prior to his return to Appalachian, Satterfield spent one season as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Toledo (2009) and two as the offensive coordinator at Florida International (2010-11). In his only season at Toledo, the Rockets ranked 20th nationally in passing (278.5 yards per game) and 14th in total offense (438.3 ypg), averages that were 89 and 104 yards better than the season prior to his arrival. In his two seasons at FIU, Satterfield helped lead the Golden Panthers to the first two bowl appearances in school history, including a victory over Toledo in the 2010 Little Caesars Bowl. After going 3-9 and averaging 321 yards of offense the year prior to his arrival, FIU won 15 games and averaged 380 yards in Satterfield’s two seasons as offensive coordinator.
Scott Satterfield has enjoyed success at every stop of his 24-year playing and coaching career, most notably in his 21 years at Appalachian State University, where the 2017 season marks his fifth season as the Mountaineers’ head coach. Satterfield has taken the Mountaineers to new heights as the Apps have made the move to the FBS level in impressive fashion. He led App State to a Sun Belt-record 11 wins in the program’s first bowl-eligible season and captured the Sun Belt Conference championship last season en route to consecutive 10-win seasons. With a 24-4 record in three-plus seasons in the Sun Belt, back-to-back bowl wins and 10-win seasons, and a conference championship, Satterfield has quickly established App State as one of the premier programs, not only in the Sun Belt, but across all the Group of 5 conferences. The Mountaineers are 31-5 against G5 opponents in their three-plus seasons at the FBS level under Satterfield, including a 31-28 win over Toledo in the 2016 Camellia Bowl. It was the second consecutive bowl title for App State, making it the first program in FBS history to do so in its first two seasons. App State’s 11 victories in 2015 were the most by a program in its first season of bowl eligibility after completing the transition from I-AA/FCS to I-A/FBS. App State put together one of the most statistically complete seasons in league history in 2016. The Mountaineers allowed 94 points in their eight Sun Belt games, marking the fewest points allowed in conference play in the FBS, and they were sixth nationally in interceptions (20). The Mountaineers finished 7-1 in league play, leading the conference in Scoring Defense (17.0 ppg), Total Defense (326.0), Rushing Offense (245.6 ypg), and Turnover Margin (+8), and Time of Possession (33:25). In conference play, App led the league in Total Offense (452.5 ypg). A WIN FOR APP STATE WOULD - Give the Mountaineers a 32-5 record against fellow Group of Five programs since they made their FBS debut in 2014. - Give fifth-year head coach Scott Satterfield a 38-20 record and put him in a tie for fourth place on the list for career victories by an App State coach. Sparky Woods is currently in sole possession of fourth with a 38-19-2 record from 1984-88. The top three are Jerry Moore (215-87 from 1989-2012), E.C. Duggins (57-25-3 from 1947-50, 1952-55) and Jim Brakefield (47-48-4 from 1971-79). NO TRESPASSING Senior RT Beau Nunn (35 career starts) and senior RG Colby Gossett (40 straight starts) have been mainstays on one of the nation’s most consistent offensive lines. App has ranked in the top 20 in rushing offense and sacks allowed for three straight years. Since the start of 2015, led by its “Legion of Boone” secondary, App State’s defense ranks fourth nationally with 47 interceptions (18 in 2015, 20 in 2016, nine in 2017). Northern Illinois has 49 (22, 14, 13) in the same span, and Utah (22, 18, 10) has 50. San Diego State (23, 26, 8) leads the nation with 57, including 28 by its cornerbacks.

For Appalachian State, 27 of its 47 picks since the start of 2015 have come from its cornerbacks. A second-year player who started as a true freshman, Duck has nine picks in 20 career games to lead the nation since the beginning of the 2016 season. Of the 13 active FBS players with at least 10 career interceptions, all 13 are seniors. THREE STRIKES AND YOU’RE OUT By forcing 37 three-and-outs in 89 defensive possessions, App is second among Group of Five teams and 10th nationally with a 41.6 percentage. Michigan is first at 54.4. App forced three-and-outs on 8 of 13 series vs. Wake Forest, 9 of 12 vs. Savannah State, 5 of 12 at Georgia and 6 of 14 at Idaho. DEEP THREAT Redshirt freshman Jalen Virgil caught five passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns last weekend against Coastal Carolina. In addition to scores of 83 and 53 yards, he also had a 39-yard reception. With 308 yards this year, his per-catch average of 22.0 yards ranks seventh nationally among players with at least 14 receptions. The 186 receiving yards were the most by an App State player since Sean Price had 231 against Georgia Southern in 2012, making Virgil’s total the highest in the FBS era. 12 APPS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-SUN BELT NEW ORLEANS - A league-best 12 Appalachian State Mountaineers, including Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Jalin Moore (Shelby, N.C./Crest), have been named to the 2017 Sun Belt Preseason All-Conference Football Teams, the league announced on Friday. Moore was joined on the first team offense by senior wide receiver Shaedon Meadors (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes), guard Colby Gossett (Cumming, Ga./ North Forsyth) and tackle Beau Nunn (York, S.C./ Work Comp.). Linebacker Eric Boggs (Belton, S.C./ Belton-Honea Path), defensive tackle Tee Sims (Covington, Ga./Eastside) and cornerback Clifton Duck (Matthews, N.C./Butler) landed on the first team defense. Quarterback Taylor Lamb (Calhoun, Ga./Calhoun) and tackle Vic Johnson (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) were named to the second team offense, joined by nose tackle Myquon Stout (China Grove, N.C./Carson), linebacker Devan Stringer (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville), and placekicker Michael Rubino (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) on the second team defense and special teams. Moore, Lamb, and a wealth of experience on both sides of the ball are a big reason the Mountaineers, under fifth-year Head Coach Scott Satterfield (32-18 at App State), were picked as the preseason favorite in the Sun Belt by the league head coaches on Thursday. App is coming off a 10-3 season in which it claimed the program’s first Sun Belt Conference championship and a second consecutive bowl win, a 31-28 win over Toledo the in 2016 Raycom Camellia Bowl. Moore rushed for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns en route to being named the 2016 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. He burst onto the scene in the fourth game of the season, bulldozing Akron with 257 yards rushing and three touchdowns to earn Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honors. He would rush for 100 yards or more in six consecutive games and in eight of App’s next nine games. Gossett and Nunn paved the way for a rushing offense that piled up 250.9 yards per game, the second-highest total in Sun Belt history, second only to App State in 2015. Gossett started every game, while Nunn missed two games late in the season, but returned for the Camellia Bowl win. On top of Moore’s success, the duo helped then-senior Marcus Cox surpass 5,000 yards for his career and join Moore with over 1,000 yards rushing on the season. Meadors earned a first-team nod after 45 catches for 716 yards as a junior. He had three consecutive 100-yard receiving games in the first half of Sun Belt play, also landing on SportsCenter’s Top 10 with an acrobatic catch over a Georgia Southern defender in a late-October win.

• Led the Sun Belt in 2016 with 1,402 yards rushing, which led to him being named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. Named the Preseason Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year in 2017. • Rushed for 241 yards and two touchdowns on just 19 carries against New Mexico State on Oct. 7. • Posted a career-high 257 rushing yards on 39 tries last year at Akron and came off bench to rush for 244 yards on 27 carries at Idaho as freshman in 2015. • Moore is one of only two active FBS backs with at least three games of 240-plus rushing yards. The other is LSU’s Derris Guice (276 vs. Ole Miss last weekend, 285 vs. Texas A&M in 2016, 252 vs. Arkansas in 2016). • App State was 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions at Idaho, and Moore had an 18-yard run on a fourthand-2 play from App’s 44 when the Mountaineers were trailing 20-0 in the third quarter. App State scored on the next play and rallied to win 23-20. • Because of injuries or game circumstances, Moore has been limited to roughly one half of play in three games this season. GAME 1 Final APPALACHIAN ST. 0 0 0 10 10 #15 Georgia 7 14 10 0 31
2017 APPALACHIAN STATE FOOTBALL
Sept. 2 - Sanford Stadium - Athens, Ga. - 92,746
Senior quarterback Taylor Lamb completed 18 of his 27 passes for 128 yards and had a late touchdown run contribute to his team-leading 66 rushing yards for the Mountaineers, who trailed 21-0 at halftime with a sellout crowd of 92,746 in attendance for the ESPN game in Sanford Stadium. “I think Georgia is a really fine football team,” App State coach Scott Satterfield said. “They’re obviously very talented. They have so many seniors that have played a lot of football in the SEC, and that really showed against us tonight. We made too many mistakes. You can’t do that against an average football team and expect it to turn out very well, but especially against a caliber of team like Georgia.” Georgia (1-0) led 31-0 before Appalachian safety Desmond Franklin intercepted a fourth-quarter pass and returned the ball 26 yards to Georgia’s 21. Two plays later, Lamb rushed up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown with 5:41 remaining.
APP NOTES - Senior quarterback Taylor Lamb rushed for a team-leading 66 yards on 10 official carries, including a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Eight of his carries netted 90 yards, but two sacks cut 24 yards off his total. - With his 32-yard run in the first quarter, Lamb has had a carry of at least 30 yards in four straight games and a carry of at least 20 yards in seven straight games. - Running back Jalin Moore finished with four catches for 34 yards, all in the first half. In his first two seasons with the Mountaineers, Moore totaled five catches for 32 yards. - Senior linebacker Devan Stringer recorded a sack, his first since the 2015 regular-season finale against South Alabama. He now has 5.5 sacks in his career. - Senior safety A.J. Howard led App State with 11 tackles, two off his career high of 13 against Liberty as a true freshman in 2014. - Sophomore defenders Desmond Franklin (safety) and Jordan Fehr (linebacker) posted their first career interceptions. - True freshmen Thomas Hennigan and Malik Williams started at receiver for the Mountaineers. The last time a true freshman receiver started a season opener for App State was the Michigan game in 2014.

An interception by sophomore linebacker Jordan Fehr set up a final possession for redshirt freshman quarterback Zac Thomas, who led the Mountaineers (0-1) into field-goal range before Michael Rubino converted a 43-yard kick in the last minute. “I was proud of the way our guys finished,” Satterfield said. “We talk in our program all the time about how we finish. That’s what we’re made of, and what we did in the fourth quarter is going to make our football team. We’ll build off that and take a positive out of this game.” App State junior running back Jalin Moore added 38 yards on 13 carries and made a career-high four catches for 34 yards.

2017 APPALACHIAN STATE FOOTBALL
Sept. 9 - Kidd Brewer Stadium - Boone, N.C. - 20,109
Lamb tied Appalachian State’s single-game record by throwing five touchdown passes in a 54-7 victory against Savannah State on Saturday. He played only two quarters of the 2017 home opener, completing 12 of his 15 passes for 327 yards as the Mountaineers (1-1) took a 45-0 lead into halftime of the gold-themed game in Kidd Brewer Stadium. “I thought our guys came in and executed almost flawlessly in the first half,” App State head coach Scott Satterfield said. “It was almost a near-perfect first half for us really in all facets of the game. We’re really proud of that because Savannah State hadn’t played a game coming into the season, so you don’t ever really know what you’re going to see, but our guys adjusted really well.” Lamb matched the five-TD total accomplished previously by four App State quarterbacks: DeAndre Presley in 2010, Armanti Edwards in 2008, Richie Williams in 2004 and Pat Murphy in 1967 and 1968. In surpassing his previous single-game high of four touchdown passes, Lamb connected twice with tight end Collin Reed and once apiece with tight end Levi Duffield, receiver Zy Letman and receiver Jalen Virgil. Scoring receptions by Duffield (57 yards), Reed (68 yards) and Virgil (56 yards) eclipsed 50 yards. “The game plan really came together with what we wanted to do,” Lamb said. “It was almost perfect in the first half on the offensive side of the ball. We had some missed keys here and there, but at halftime we pretty much knew some of us were done to get those young guys playing and get them some good game reps.” Junior running back Jalin Moore opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run, part of a nine-carry appearance that ended with 57 rushing yards, and Michael Rubino’s 38-yard field goal came before App State’s sixth touchdown of the half against the FCS-level Tigers (0-1). Thanks to a 50-yard touchdown run
APP NOTES - In its last four home openers, App State has posted a 4-0 record while outscoring its opponents 200-14. It won 66-0 against Campbell in 2014, 49-0 against Howard in 2015, 31-7 against Old Dominion in 2016 and 54-7 against Savannah State on Saturday. The 2014 opener against Campbell was also 45-0 at halftime. The Mountaineers limited Savannah State to six first downs and 114 total yards. It was their lowest yardage total allowed since Georgia State managed only 62 yards in a 44-0 loss to App State on Nov. 1, 2014. Despite playing only two quarters, Taylor Lamb completed 12 of his 15 passes for 327 yards and five touchdowns. Five touchdown passes tied the school record set previously by four App State quarterbacks: DeAndre Presley in 2010 (vs. The Citadel), Armanti Edwards in 2008 (vs. Wofford), Richie Williams in 2004 (vs. Northwestern State) and Pat Murphy in 1967 (vs. Presbyterian) and 1968 (vs. Wofford). Lamb’s previous high for touchdown passes in a game was four (vs. Texas State in 2016, ODU in 2015). Lamb’s 327 passing yards are the second-highest total of his career. He had 397 passing yards against Liberty as a freshman. Lamb increased his career total to 68 touchdown passes. He’s six behind Armanti Edwards, the school record-holder with 74 touchdown throws from 2006-09. Sophomore tight end Collin Reed had three catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He entered the game with five career catches for 26 yards and one touchdown, with four of the catches, 27 of the yards and the touchdown occurring in a spot start against Louisiana last season.

in the fourth quarter, senior Terrence Upshaw led the Mountaineers with 86 yards on 10 carries. Lamb, who had his biggest passing yardage game since he threw for a career-high 397 yards against Liberty as a freshman, increased his career total to 68 touchdown passes. Heading into next weekend’s Sun Belt Conference opener at Texas State, he’s only six behind Edwards, the school record-holder with 74 touchdown throws from 2006-09. “We wanted to push the ball down the field today,” Satterfield said. “It’s got to be a part of our offense to help open up the run game.” Duffield’s 57-yard touchdown seven minutes into Saturday’s game was the longest catch by an App State tight end since Ben Jorden had a 58-yard reception against Presbyterian in 2008, but Reed topped both of those gains on his 68-yard touchdown with 12:30 left in the second quarter.

App State Makes Late Stand to Win SBC Opener SAN MARCOS, Texas - Appalachian State delivered a Lone Star stand. With quarterback Taylor Lamb igniting a comeback by throwing several thirddown completions to true freshman receivers and senior safety A.J. Howard making a tackle at the 1-yard line on the final play, the Mountaineers rallied to claim a 20-13 victory at Texas State in their Sun Belt Conference opener Saturday night. It was also the program’s first game played in that football-rich state. Even the drama was bigger in Texas. The Bobcats recovered a fumble at their 1-yard line with 2:26 remaining and converted three third downs before reaching the App State 7 with 10 seconds left. Damian Williams completed an over-the-middle pass to Elijah King, and Howard made the game-saving tackle a few moments before time expired with Texas State rushing to set up another snap. A video review confirmed that no time remained and no touchdown was scored. App State (2-1, 1-0) trailed 10-0 before newcomer Thomas Hennigan scored his first college touchdown on a third-and-goal pass from Lamb with 29 seconds remaining in the first half. Michael Rubino tied the game on a 27-yard field goal to end the opening series of the second half, and the Mountaineers pulled ahead for good on Terrence Upshaw’s 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. The teams traded fourth-quarter field goals, with James Sherman making a 38yard kick before Rubino increased to lead to 20-13 on a 46-yard kick, and Clifton Duck’s 41-yard interception return to the Texas State 14 put the Mountaineers in position to seal the outcome. After failing to convert any of its first five third-down chances, App State was 3-for-3 on its breakthrough touchdown drive and 4-for-5 during its stretch of 17 consecutive points. Lamb overcame a slow start to complete 17 of his 28 passes for 167 yards, and Upshaw rushed for 60 yards while carrying most of the second-half workload. Hennigan had 57 yards on six catches, including third-down conversions of 11 and 6 yards on App State’s first scoring drive, and true freshman Malik Williams’ 28-yard gain on a third-and-10 pass set up the go-ahead touchdown. Defensively, App State sacked Texas State quarterback Damian Williams four times, led by sacks from Anthony Flory, Rashaad Townes and Tee Sims, with Tae Hayes and Myquon Stout also combining on a takedown. The Mountaineers won despite being outgained 385-283 and finishing with seven fewer minutes of possession.

Wake Forest Edges App State BOONE, N.C. - On a record-breaking Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium, Appalachian State lost 20-19 against undefeated ACC program Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons’ first-ever trip to Boone drew a stadium-record 35,126 fans, topping the previous mark of 34,658 set last year during Miami’s visit. It’s also a record in the 23-game series involving App State and Wake Forest, including 22 games played in Winston-Salem from 1975-2001. The sixth lead change of a back-and-forth game occurred on Wake Forest kicker Mike Weaver’s 25-yard field goal with 7:22 left, and the Demon Deacons blocked a 39-yard field goal attempt with five seconds remaining. After Wake Forest converted a field goal on its first drive of the game, App State’s defense forced five consecutive three-and-outs and allowed only one first down on the Deacons’ last six possessions of the first half. Eric Boggs’ 11 tackles and 10 from Devan Stringer led a defense that held its high-scoring opponent 23.7 points below its season average and forced eight three-and-outs in 13 possessions. Senior quarterback Taylor Lamb completed 26 of his career-high 50 attempts for 372 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers (2-2). True freshman Thomas Hennigan had five catches for 74 yards, and T.J. Watkins’ three catches for 102 yards included an 84-yard touchdown. Making his fifth career start, senior running back Terrence Upshaw rushed for a game-high 86 yards on 15 carries against the Deacons (4-0). The Mountaineers took a 6-3 lead with 2:49 left in the first quarter on Lamb’s 20yard touchdown pass to tight end Levi Duffield. Lamb handed the ball to Upshaw, who ran right before flipping the ball backward to receiver Malik Williams. As Williams ran back to the left, he lateraled the ball to Lamb, who fired a pass down the right sideline to Duffield. Michael Rubino’s 38-yard field goal with 1:58 left in the second quarter gave App State a 9-3 halftime lead, and the Mountaineers answered John Wolford’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Greg Dortch with 7:52 remaining in the third quarter with a go-ahead touchdown 50 seconds later. Lamb’s shovel pass to the speedy Watkins turned into an 84-yard touchdown that pushed the Mountaineers ahead 16-10. Wake Forest moved ahead 17-16 on Wolford’s 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cam Serigne with 3:24 left in the third quarter, and App State regained the lead again on Rubino’s 39-yard field goal with 10:35 remaining. Weaver’s field goal put the Deacons ahead 20-19, setting up the dramatic finish.

APP NOTES - Taylor Lamb improved to 30-11 as a starter, tying D.J. Campbell (30-17 from 1989-92) for the second-most wins by a starting quarterback in school history. Armanti Edwards was 42-7. - Appalachian State’s six interceptions set a school record and tied the record for the most interceptions by a defense in a game involving two Sun Belt Conference teams. The previous App State record of five occurred against Elon in 1968 and Mississippi College in 1991. - In the same game, Tae Hayes and Clifton Duck tied the App State single-game record for interceptions. Mark LeGree had three against Wofford in 2008, and Larry McKenzie had three against Davidson in 1973. - Hayes, a junior, now has four career interceptions. Duck, a sophomore, increased his career total to nine. - App State erased a fourth-quarter deficit in a home win for the first time since its 31-29 victory against UL Monroe in 2014. In that game, UL Monroe scored a go-ahead touchdown with 1:42 left, and App State’s Bentlee Critcher made a 39-yard field goal with 29 seconds left. The Mountaineers trailed in overtime but not in the fourth quarter of a triple-overtime victory against Troy in 2015 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. - Jalin Moore is currently the only active FBS back with three games of at least 240 rushing yards, as he gained 244 at Idaho in 2015 and a career-high 257 at Akron last season. Entering Saturday, Tulsa’s D’Angelo Brewer, LSU’s Derrius Guice and Stanford’s Bryce Love had two games with at least 240 yards.

Six INTs, Moore’s 241 Yards Lead App State Past Aggies BOONE, N.C. - Hat tricks by pass-hungry defenders Tae Hayes and Clifton Duck coincided with a timely aerial contribution from an unlikely source. Appalachian State’s defense set a school record with six interceptions, including a record-tying three apiece from its two starting cornerbacks, and true freshman wide receiver Malik Williams threw the tiebreaking touchdown on a trick play with 5:45 remaining in the Mountaineers’ 45-31 homecoming victory against New Mexico State on Saturday. App State (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) trailed twice in the fourth quarter and overcame a fourth-quarter deficit in a victory at Kidd Brewer Stadium for the first time since its 31-29 win against UL Monroe in 2014. Williams, a high school quarterback, connected with true freshman Thomas Hennigan on a 27-yard score that pushed App State ahead 38-31. A fourth-down stop by linebacker Eric Boggs preceded a 56-yard touchdown run from Jalin Moore, who finished with 241 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, and Duck’s final interception with 1:16 left sealed the outcome. Hayes and Duck tied Mark LeGree (2008 against Wofford) and Larry McKenzie (1973 against Davidson) for the most single-game picks in school history. Moore is currently the only active FBS back with three games of at least 240 rushing yards, as he gained 244 at Idaho in 2015 and a career-high 257 at Akron last season. Terrence Upshaw added two touchdown runs, including a tying effort midway through the fourth quarter, as App State scored 31 points off the first five turnovers by New Mexico State (2-4, 0-2). Seventy-three seconds after the Mountaineers tied the game thanks to quarterback Taylor Lamb’s 38-yard touchdown run with 10:31 remaining in the game, New Mexico State quarterback Tyler Rogers threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Jason Huntley. Moore’s 41-yard carry started a drive that ended with Upshaw’s 10-yard touchdown run with 7:13 left, and Duck’s 39-yard interception return to the Aggies’ 29 set up the go-ahead score. Lamb looked right and fired a behind-the-line lateral to Williams, who hit Hennigan in stride in the end zone, allowing the Mountaineers to break a 31-all tie.

Epic Comeback Lifts App State over Idaho MOSCOW, Idaho - The Kibbie Comeback kept Appalachian State undefeated in Sun Belt Conference play. App State mounted its biggest rally in seven years and moved atop the Sun Belt standings with a 23-20 victory at Idaho on Saturday. The Mountaineers (4-2, 3-0) trailed 20-0 early in the third quarter in the Kibbie Dome before coming back behind a sack-hungry, turnover-minded defense and three touchdown throws from senior quarterback Taylor Lamb, who tied Armanti Edwards’ school record of 74 career TD passes. It was App State’s biggest comeback since it erased a 35-14 deficit in the fourth quarter of a 42-41 victory at Chattanooga in the 2010 opener. Lamb’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Ike Lewis helped tie the game with 10:04 left, and Michael Rubino made a go-ahead field goal from 31 yards out with 7:24 remaining. Idaho (2-4, 1-2) started its final drive by regaining possession at its 46-yard line with 2:23 remaining, and Tee Sims had a hand in two sacks leading up to a fourthand-24 pass that was completed but stopped a yard short of the marker with 50 seconds left. After App State fell behind 20-0, the last six drives against the Mountaineers’ defense covered a total of 17 yards, including the 23-yard pass on the Vandals’ last offensive play. Their first 22 plays of the second half produced 34 yards and the team’s lone first down after the break. The Mountaineers totaled six sacks, and Idaho’s 17 plays over its last six possessions included three sacks, two lost fumbles and five incompletions. Sims was credited with 2.5 sacks, and Boggs made two fourth-quarter fumble recoveries. Lamb threw for 155 yards, and Lewis scored twice while catching six passes for a career-high 101 yards. Idaho forced a turnover on the first play of the third quarter, but an App State defensive stand triggered a fourth-and-1 scenario from the Mountaineers’ 2-yard line and led to a short field goal that pushed the Vandals ahead 20-0. The Mountaineers went 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions in scoring touchdowns on each of their next two drives. Facing a fourth-and-2 situation from its 44 with nine minutes left in the third quarter, Jalin Moore gained 18 yards to set up Lewis’ 38-yard touchdown reception on a one-handed catch of a short pass from Lamb.

APP NOTES - App State is 4-0 in Sun Belt play for the third straight season. It has won 24 of its last 26 league games and is 12-1 at home during that stretch. - With 76 career touchdown passes, Appalachian State senior quarterback Taylor Lamb is now App State’s alltime leader. He had two touchdown passes after entering Saturday’s game tied for first place with Armanti Edwards, who had 74 from 2006-09. Lamb’s 76 touchdowns have come in 45 games. - Lamb’s 427 passing yards rank second in school history behind the 433 that Edwards had against South Carolina State in 2008. It was the eighth 400-yard passing game in App State history, and Lamb’s previous high was 397 yards against Liberty as a redshirt freshman in 2014. - Lamb is now tied for third place in Sun Belt Conference history with 76 touchdown passes, the same total FAU’s Rusty Smith had from 2005-09. There’s a first-place tie at 81 between Troy’s Corey Robinson (2010-13) and ULM’s Kolton Browning (2010-13). - The attendance of 30,179 ranks seventh in Kidd Brewer Stadium history and was the ninth home crowd of at least 30,000 in school history. Three of the top seven crowds have occurred in the last 10 home games, as a record 35,126 fans attended the Wake Forest game earlier this season and 34,658 attended the Miami game early in the 2016 season. - With redshirt freshman Jalen Virgil catching five passes for 186 yards and senior Ike Lewis posting six catches for 106 yards, it was the first time App State had two 100-yard receivers since 2013, when Tony Washington (129 yards) and Andrew Peacock (127) both hit triple digits against Georgia Southern.

Lamb’s Record-Setting Day Leads App State to SBC Win BOONE, N.C. - A record-breaking day for senior quarterback Taylor Lamb helped first-place Appalachian State remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play. Lamb became the school’s leader in career touchdown passes and threw for 427 yards, the second-highest total in program history, as App State overcame a halftime deficit to win 37-29 against Coastal Carolina before a crowd of 30,179 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Mountaineers (5-2, 4-0) return to action next weekend at UMass and resume their league schedule at ULM on Nov. 4. They have rallied to erase second-half deficits in all four of their league victories. With passes of 83 and 53 yards to redshirt freshman Jalen Virgil (five catches for 186 yards) increasing his career total to 76 touchdown throws, Lamb broke a firstplace tie with Armanti Edwards, who had 74 touchdown passes from 2006-09. Lamb is now tied for third place in Sun Belt history, with two players tied for first at 81, and Lamb’s 427 yards rank second in App State’s single-game history behind only the 433 that Edwards had against South Carolina State in 2008. Afterward, Satterfield presented the game ball to Lamb, who was doused with water by some of his teammates. Virgil’s first score, which came on a deep throw with the Mountaineers already ahead 7-0 early in the first quarter, allowed Lamb to move into sole possession of first place on the school’s career list for TD passes. Michael Rubino made a 38-yard field goal early in the second quarter to give App State a 17-3 advantage. The Chanticleers (1-6, 0-4) scored 19 straight points to take a 22-17 lead before Lamb reconnected with Virgil, who caught a pass along the left sideline at the Coastal Carolina 37 and weaved all the way across the field before reaching the end zone near the right-front pylon for a 23-22 edge with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter. The Mountaineers stretched their lead to 30-22 when redshirt freshman Marcus Williams Jr. scored his first career touchdown on a 1-yard run with 12:47 left, and Okon Godwin’s fumble recovery inside the Coastal Carolina 20 set up another 1-yard TD run from Williams with 6:16 left.
