2017 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards State and Territory Award Recipient Ulrich Purwien, Secondary Mindarie Senior College, Western Australia Whilst studying at University, Ulrich was employed to supervise and assist students in the laboratory. His mentor at the time encouraged him to pursue teaching after he saw the way Ulrich engaged with students. Today, as a Senior Science teacher, Ulrich’s passion and enthusiasm to interact with students has not diminished. To promote student enthusiasm and enjoyment of a topic, Ulrich uses online environments such as Schoology, Kahoot and Kahn Academy, or embraces the reverse classroom where students for homework watch a video or PowerPoint so that the new content isn’t so foreign the following day. Ulrich believes that the primary goal is to move students to increasing their independence where they understand, appreciate and accept responsibility for the choices they make and in doing so, maximise their opportunities. To develop students into young adults for society, Ulrich is keen to invite guest speakers to give personal accounts about issues faced by students, to motivate and educate young minds for their future.
