2017 Shooting Practice Expectations: Another area to consider when players look to improve their production as a player in our basketball program is their ability to make shots. For most players shooting is the most fun part of basketball. If you have the physical ability to make aggressive cuts leading to open shots, you have to have the ability make those open shots. We prefer to put five capable to great shooters on the floor at a time. All our players have the ability to improve their shooting ability before next season. We know improvement will only happen if we put in the effort. Our challenge to every player is to shoot 10,000 shots in the month of June and July. We know that any player shooting 10,000 shots will come to tryouts next season as a better shooter, and will be in a better position to help our team. We don’t care where you shoot those shots. We know that some players shoot in their driveway or backyard courts, some shoot at the community center, some shoot at sunshine, and others hire personal trainers to practice shooting. We are offering gym time twice a week to hopefully get 300 shots in 45 minutes. Here is additional information on the shooting program: What is it? A 45-minute session solely dedicating to shooting. You must be registered and we expect you to attend. Don’t register if you aren’t going to come. It is free to register for those interested. When is it? At 7:00 pm before open gym on Tues. and Thurs. or at 9:30 after open gym on Tues and Thurs. Who is it for? There will be 18 spots available to reserve. Players will practice in groups of three. If there are more people interested than spots available, then reservations will be filled by seniority, followed by first come first serve. What is the structure for the shooting session? Players will be placed in groups of three at a hoop. The goal will be for the group to move quickly and average 1 shot every 3 seconds so the group shoots 900 shots combined or 300 shots per person. There will be a mixture competitive and non-competitive shooting drills. 900 shots is a bit of a lofty goal, so we expect players to arrive on time and come with the mindset to be actively shooting, rebounding, and passing for 45 minutes straight. Why is it limited to 18 players? The goal is to get quality shots and also for the coaches to give feedback to the shooters. It gets too crowded in the front gym with more than 4 hoops being used, and more than 2 hoops being used in the back gym. Why do we have to register if it’s free? It’s an attempt to hold players accountable for attending. We are offering this as a free opportunity to get some shooting practice and shooting advice. As coaches we don’t want to spend our time coaching in an empty gym. If we don’t get enough interested players we will cancel it. If we get too many interested players we may expand it. We are hoping players will find it useful to get a workout in that is solely dedicated to shooting and it is condensed into 45 minutes. The other 7,000 shots would require you shooting at a park, in your drive etc…

As part of the tryout process we will have a competitive shooting drill to see who has improved their shooting. We believe improvement is a result of effort. Are you willing to put in the effort to improve your ability to make shots?
