Seewald led Valparaiso to its best offensive performance since 1994 in a 63-32 PFL victory against Morehead State, Saturday. In just three quarters of action, He completed 14-of24 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Crusaders to a 56-18 lead before he departed. Seewald completed passes to 10 different receivers in the win and five completions went for more than 20 yards. Seewald’s two touchdowns came on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, one a 54yard completion to Jean Rene and the other a 17-yard completion to Kyle Cartales as the Crusaders built a 42-6 halftime lead. He also had a 79-yard completion to Donny Navarro to set up another touchdown.

Warner’s interception return for a touchdown provided the decisive score in Drake’s 17-12 PFL win at Davidson, Saturday. His 38-yard interception return midway through the second quarter gave Drake a 14-0 lead it would hold on to, improving to 4-1 in PFL play. It was Warner’s third interception this season and he also had three tackles (one solo) in the contest. It also was Drake’s first defensive touchdown this season and the program’s first interception return for a touchdown since 2014

Making his first collegiate start, Morris kept Davidson ahead of the field position battle in a 17-12 PFL loss to Drake, Saturday. Punting 10 times in the contest, he averaged 34.7 yards per punt but saw five kicks downed inside the 20-yard line and Drake’s average starting position was its own 21 after a Morris punt. In addition, a Drake returner fumbled one of his punts, helping set up Davidson’s second field goal. Morris boomed a 52-yard punt when given a rare long field to work with, resulting in his lone touchback of the contest.

2017 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE PFL PFL’s 25TH CAMPAIGN | The 2017 season marks the 25th year for the Pioneer Football

League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The league will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA FCS Championship.

25TH TITLE RACE ON LINE IN WEEK 10 | The marquee PFL matchup in Week 10 is the nightcap between Drake and San Diego. The Toreros, unbeaten in their last 18 PFL contests, would clinch a share of their ninth league title with a victory. Meanwhile, a Bulldogs win would create a tie atop the league standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. SAN DIEGO EXTENDS PFL RECORD | San Diego posted its 18th consecutive PFL victory with a Week 9 win at Stetson. It is the second longest active conference win streak in Division I entering Week 10, trailing only Ohio Valley Conference member Jacksonville State’s 29-game conference win streak.

FLYERS TO THE BLOCK | Dayton blocked its sixth kick of the season in its Week 9 contest

against Butler. The Flyers now rank second among FCS teams in blocked kicks, behind only South Carolina State (nine blocked kicks). Redshirt freshman Matt Clifford has blocked two kicks in 2017, one of only 23 FCS defenders to block multiple kicks.

OPPORTUNISTIC DEFENSES | During its Week 9 win against Morehead State, Valparaiso

became the fourth PFL team to record multiple defensive touchdowns in 2017. The Crusaders joined Campbell (four), Marist and Stetson (two each) as teams with multiple defensive scores this season. Campbell is one of 11 FCS squads with four or more defensive touchdowns this season.

CAMELS DEFEND THE AIR | Campbell has picked off a FCS-best 18 passes through Week 9 and is ranked No. 4 among FCS teams in pass efficiency defense (99.33). TWO PFL ROOKIES NAMED TO RICE AWARD WATCH LIST | Campbell quarterback

SMITH’S RICE AWARD RESUME | Smith is ranked among the NCAA’s Top 50 in 15 different statistical categories, including a FCS-best 9.36 yards per carry and ranking third in rushing yards per game (112.4 ypg). He is 10th in total offense (310.6 yards per game) and in points responsibility (18.0 pg) through Week 9 action. DUGGER’S RICE RESUME | Dugger meanwhile is ranked No. 10 in rushing yards per game (100.1) and his 163 total carries this season leads all freshmen by 40 carries and ranks No. 6 among all FCS runners. TOREROS PETERSEN TACKLING BUCHANAN WATCH LIST | San Diego fifth-year defensive lineman Jonathan Petersen was named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List and enters Week 10 among FCS leaders in sacks (2nd, 1.13 per game), forced fumbles (1st, 0.63 per game) and tackles for loss (9th, 1.60). Among FCS active career leaders, he ranks No. 1 in sacks (0.81) and forced fumbles (0.33) per game as well as No. 2 in both career sacks (35.0) and tackles for loss per game (1.44). LAWRENCE MAKING PAYTON AWARD PUSH | San Diego junior quarterback Anthony

Lawrence was the PFL’s lone representative on the Walter Payton Award Watch List. He enters Week 10 ranked among the FCS Top 50 in 12 statistical categories, including ranking seventh in both passing efficiency (165.8) and passing touchdowns (21). Lawrence owns a career 157.31 pass efficiency rating that ranks fifth among NCAA career active leaders.

FEAR THE KICK RETURNERS | The PFL boasts four kick returners among the FCS Top 15 in combined kick return yardage, the most of any FCS conference. Morehead State’s Jaunyea Tarver leads all FCS returners with 1,020 yards. He is joined in the Top 15 by Dayton’s Christian Searles (7th, 697), Valparaiso’s Bailey Gessinger (9th, 691) and Davidson’s Williams Wicks (15th, 589). YOUNG RUSHING LEADERS | The PFL’s youth has run rampant in 2017, with three of the league’s freshmen runners ranked among the FCS Top 25 in rushing yards per game. Campbell quarterback Daniel Smith is third among all FCS runners with 125.8 yards per game with Davidson’s running back Wesley Dugger ranking 10th (100.1 ypg) and San Diego freshman Emilio Martinez checking in at No. 24 (85.3 ypg). DOLPHINS DO RUN | A look at the NCAA FCS team leaders reveals

Jacksonville’s offense is the subdivision’s No. 4 rushing offense, averaging 296.0 yards per game on the ground. The Dolphins rank sixth in team rush attempts (446) and 12th in yards per rush (5.31).

MARIST’S JOHNSON 1ST TO RETURN KICK FOR SCORE |

Marist’s Mekhai Johnson became the first PFL return specialist to return a kickoff for a touchdown in 2017, turning in the score against Jacksonville in Week 4. He remains the only PFL return man to post a kickoff return touchdown in 2017.

RETURNS TO THE HOUSE | Five of the nation’s return men to take a punt back for a touchdown reside in the PFL. Stetson’s JJ Henderson, Davidson’s Austin Wells, Dayton’s Christian Searles, Campbell’s Jaquan Brooks and Valparaiso’s John Regan have each put six on the board after fielding a punt in 2017. DAYTON’S CHAMBERLIN BREAKS MENTOR’S MARK | Dayton

head coach Rich Chamberlin notched his 56th PFL victory in his 75th league game, Oct. 7, when the Flyers defeated Drake. He broke the PFL record for coaching victories set by his former head coach Mike Kelley, who posted 55 league wins (71 games) during his storied career. They are the only two coaches in PFL history to record 50 league wins.

DAYTON’S SCORING STREAK HITS 463 GAMES | The nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout belongs to Dayton, which has extended the streak to 463 games. That streak includes 269 games as a FCS member second among active FCS-only streaks. Montana holds the FCS-only longest streak without being shutout at 378 games which dates back to 1989. On the FBS side, Florida holds the nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout at 368, dating back to the 1988 season. The Flyers streak dates back to 1976 when it suffered a 9-0 loss to Marshall. SIX PFL STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED CAMPBELL TROPHY SEMIFINALISTS | Campbell kicker/punter Brian Stryffeler, David-

son quarterback Taylor Mitchell, Dayton linebacker Jack Crain, Marist running back Marcellus Calhoun, San Diego nickelback Max Michaels and Stetson tight end Austin Tyrrell were among 181 semifinalists for the Campbell Trophy which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation and is prominently displayed inside its official home at the New York Athletic Club.

SMITH PUNTS WAY TO NATIONAL HONOR | Dayton junior kicker

Sean Smith became the second PFL athlete to earn national weekly honors, Oct. 8, when he was named the STATS FCS Special Teams Player of the Week. His 43.0 yards per punt against Drake saw five of his seven tries downed inside the Drake 20-yard line and two booming for more than 50 yards.

WOODS FIRST PFL ATHLETE TO EARN NATIONAL HONOR |

Campbell running back Montel Goods became the first Pioneer Football League athlete to earn a weekly national honor in 2017, earning STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week, Monday. His three touchdown outing moved him atop the PFL leaderboard in rushing touchdowns this season, his five scores matching Valparaiso’s Cody Boxrucker with both ranked 11th among FCS runners.

NEW NAME FOR BUTLER HOME FACILITY | The longtime home

for Butler football received a new name in September when the Butler Bowl was renamed the Sellick Bowl in honor of longtime supporters Winstan and Jacqueline Sellick. The renaming was in recognition of a $9.4-million gift from their estate to the university, shared among the athletics department, the Lacy School of Business and the university.

FIVE PFL ALUMNI ON NFL ACTIVE ROSTERS | The opening week

of NFL action saw five PFL alumni listed on NFL active rosters. Marist alumni Terrence Fede (Miami) and Jason Myers (Jacksonville) returned to their teams for 2017. Drake’s Eric Saubert (Atlanta), San Diego’s Jamal Agnew (Detroit) and Stetson’s Donald Payne (Jacksonville) are the league’s newest alumni to make an NFL roster in 2017.

Terrence Fede (Miami) has played in seven games this season, mostly on special teams, with six tackles to his credit. Jason Myers (Jacksonville) played in six games this season converted 11 of his 15 field-goal attempts, including 5-of-5 on kicks from 40-49 yards, and 15-of-17 PATs. Eric Saubert (Atlanta) has played in seven games this season and listed as the No. 3 tight end. Jamal Agnew (Detroit) has played seven games this season with four tackles to his credit. Donald Payne (Jacksonville) has played in five games this season and has three tackles to his credit.

PFL ALUMNUS ON CFL ACTIVE ROSTER | In addition to its five NFL alumni, the PFL currently has one alumnus on a Canadian Football League roster this season. • Matthew Shiltz (Montreal via Butler) has played each of the last two weeks and has three games played in his rookie season for the Alouettes this season with 354 total offensive yards. EIGHT FIRST-TEAM ALL-PFL RETURNEES HIGHLIGHT PRESEASON SQUAD | San Diego, the defending PFL Champion, returns

four First-Team All-PFL selections among its seven preseason picks, including quarterback Anthony Lawrence. Dayton, last season’s PFL runner up, had two returning first-team selections on the team while Campbell and Marist return one first-teamer each.

SAN DIEGO PICKED TO WIN PFL | For the seventh consecutive

year, the University of San Diego has been picked to win the Pioneer Football League regular-season race in a preseason vote of the league’s coaches. San Diego, which won the 2016 regular-season title then advanced to the second round of the FCS Championship, again received the coaches’ nod to win the 2017 PFL title. The Toreros were chosen just ahead of Dayton in polling that was dominated by the two teams. San Diego and Dayton combined to receive all available firstplace votes and also claimed all but two of the possible second-place votes.

TWO PFL ALUMNI SELECTED IN 2017 NFL DRAFT | In a mile-

stone moment for the Pioneer Football League, Drake tight end Eric Saubert and San Diego defensive back Jamal Agnew were each selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The PFL was one of five Division I FCS conferences to have two players selected in the draft. The PFL joined the Colonial Athletic Association, Big Sky Conference, Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference with two selections while the entire FCS saw 15 players drafted.

THREE NAMED TO STATS FCS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA SQUADS | Three Pioneer Football League student athletes were

among the 100 named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team. San Diego junior offensive lineman Daniel Cooney was a second-team selection while teammate senior defensive lineman Jonathan Petersen was joined on the third team by Drake punt returner Terry Wallen.

letes were among 146 nominees from across the country for the 26th edition of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Isaak Newhouse (Butler), Ryan Samuels (Davidson) and Lawrence Dickens (Marist) were nominated for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

TOREROS CHARGE TO 2016 FCS OPENING ROUND WIN | San

Diego became the first PFL team to win a game in the Division I Football Championship with its 35-21 victory at Cal Poly, last season. The Toreros win came in just the fourth season of the PFL’s automatic bid into the championship.

Notes on PFL Championship: From 1993-2000 – and returning to the format in 2005 – the PFL was composed of one division and the championship was awarded to the team with the best conference record. From 2001-2005, the league expanded and split into two divisions with the divisional winners, who were the teams with the best record against divisional opponents, facing off in a championship game, the winner of that game was awarded the league’s championship.

NOTES: The PFL records on this page reflect PFL penalties imposed against Jacksonville (# - vacated 30 wins during the 2010-14 seasons) and San Diego (% - vacated 7 wins during the 2013 season). In accordance with NCAA policy, the wins and ties, but not the losses, of the penalized team are dropped from its PFL record only. The won-lost records for each of the opposing teams are not changed when games are vacated. In addition, the overall records for both teams were not changed.

GRIDIRON CLASSIC The Gridiron Classic matched the champions of the Pioneer Football League and Northeast Conference in an exempted postseason football contest.
