~2017 Swinging for Mel Memorial Golf Scholarship~
The "Swinging for Mel Memorial Golf Scholarship" was established in 2012 in honor of former golf coach Mel Fleischer. Mel began coaching at the middle school in 2006 to launch the golf program. In 2008, he began coaching at the high school and continued to coach until 2011. Mel was an excellent teacher, instructor and mentor to the student athletes during his time as a coach. The money to support this scholarship is raised through a “Swinging for Mel” golf tournament held every year at the Elberton Country Club. The Swinging for Mel Memorial Golf Scholarship is awarded to a senior member(s) of the ECCHS golf team. The scholarship is worth $1,000.00 and is sent to the registrar of the recipient’s college of choice. The 2017 recipient of the Swinging for Mel Golf Scholarship is Julia Scott.
