Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

Congratulations

Entries from over 70 countries cover every imaginable space, from ships to airports, museums to burger vans, and from revered Michelin-starred establishments to the fleeting dynamism of pop-ups.

I would like to thank all our project entrant designers and operators for ensuring the excellent quality at this year’s Awards.

The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, now in its tenth year, is a globally recognised competition dedicated to the design of food and beverage spaces.

Past judges from hospitality, design and lifestyle include Tony Chambers (Editor in Chief of Wallpaper*), Alberto Alessi, Marcus Wareing and Thomas Heatherwick. The Awards are followed by over 35,000 of the most influential architects, designers, lighting designers, restaurant & bar operators and media.

‘The Great Build’ With a different theme every year, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards ceremony is a unique event strongly focused on ‘innovation’. To celebrate the tenth year of the Awards, we will be inviting four previous Award winning designers to team up with their preferred fit-out partner to create a theatrically revealing Awards ceremony event called ‘The Great Build’ held in London at the end of September 2018.

www.restaurantandbardesignawards.com

I would like to congratulate the winners and entrants of this year’s Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. With nearly 1000 entries in our 2017 edition from over 70 countries, the quality of projects was as high as ever.

Special thanks to the judges, sponsors, set designers and event partners. I would also like to thank Ceri Richmond (Core), Simon Bristow (BCS), Rue Davies, my staff (especially Kirsty, Damien & Sue) without whose patience and attention to detail, this ambitious Awards would never happen! I would like to thank Lucy Painter (host) for her motivation, inspiration, superb communication and a thousand other virtues. 2018 will be the tenth year of the awards and we have an amazing judging panel already organised. I am really looking forward to seeing the breadth of creativity that will enter the awards in the next six months! Marco Rebora Founder / Restaurant & Bar Design Awards [email protected]

Soundscape “Three Restaurant & Bar Design Awards winning designers (SHH, Haptic Architects & Design Command) were invited to realise a creative design within a white 5m x 5m x 5m cube. Each company had their own cube and the brief was to design and create an installation inspired by a soundscape. The designers chose their own soundscapes: A sound collage studying the cultures and lifestyle of Kings Cross (Soundbites by SHH); the sounds of time (Tick Tock Block by Design Command); and the sound of the serene calm of a Norwegian fjord (Absence by Haptic Architects).” James Drew was invited to help co-ordinate the audio element of the 3 design projects, construct the sound design content for each space and sound design the event as a whole. James Drew works across many faculties of the audio industry including not just restaurant / bar audio systems design and installation but also theatre and event audio including many West End shows around the world.

6

Tick Tock Block “First of the installations to be revealed was Design Command’s “Tick Tock Block”. This was a journey through a seemingly almost never-ending spiral. As you wound round the narrow corridor you could hear the sounds of time machines through the ages: ticking, whirring, clanking and purring: grandfather clocks to the speaking clock. As you found the heart of the installation it opened up to a beautifully calm chamber with an incredible clock inspired sculpture suspended from the ceiling. Now the soundscape has a soft, warm and mellow glow and the sound of time passes much slower as if time itself has slowed down.”

7

Soundbites “The second installation to be revealed was SHH’s “Soundbites”. This was 4 suspended ‘sound cones’ reminiscent of the bell of a trumpet or the horn of a gramophone. The listener has to physically interact with the cone: climbing under each one and cocooning themselves as the horns immerse the listener in four unique soundbite collages of Kings Cross culture. Each cone a unique listening experience comprising sounds of the first steam trains in the late 1800s to the latest intercontinental services; street sellers and buskers from the early 1900s; songs from a hundred years of recorded music; revealing snippets of interviews with Kings Cross’ people from some of the earliest archived recordings curated from the British Library.”

8

Absence “The third installation of the evening to be revealed was Haptic’s “Absence”. Inspired by the sound of the peace and serenity of their homeland’s Norwegian fjords they turned their whole space into an anechoic chamber. Taking advice from industry leaders in sound insulation they built their box to insulate from the noisy chaos outside and control the reflected sound on the inside. Valuable lessons were learnt about how to control acoustics in challenging spaces such as restaurants and bars. We installed a bespoke surround system to gently fill the room with the sounds of nature: a gentle breeze, streams and wildlife. If you listened carefully you could hear a bird flying above your head and rustling leaves swirling around you. The soundscape also masking the sounds from the outside completing the incredible effect of such calm in the middle of the noisy cacophony of hundreds of people enjoying food, drinks and company.”

Haptic Architects

Haptic’s ethos is to design buildings and spaces that are rigorous in their pragmatism, elegantly composed and above all, have a focus on quality and craftsmanship. Haptic, referring to the sense of touch, is a guiding force for our design work; we strive to determine the haptical qualities for each project and how they benefit the users of our buildings. This translates in materiality, spatial relationships, light and the building’s relationship with the site. Much of our work is located in stunning locations and thus we are acutely aware of our responsibilities to design outstanding pieces of architecture that sit precisely within - and are. www.hapticarchitects.com

Uli

Located at Notting Hill Gate, ULI offers a fresh, honest approach to Asian cuisine. Natural limed oak, soft tones of blue and contemporary art give the restaurant a clean and informal look, highlighted by a hanging garden of pendant lights. Our menu encompasses carefully selected dishes from Asia, all prepared using traditional Chinese, Thai, Malay and Singaporean disciplines. We believe that Asian food should be clean, fresh and healthy, and that each dish should always be made from scratch.

Boxpark

Boxpark is a food and retail park made out of refitted shipping containers in the UK. It was founded by Roger Wade who described it as the “world’s first pop-up mall”. The first Boxpark was launched in Shoreditch in 2011, and another was built in Croydon next to the East Croydon station in 2016. Other Boxparks are also planned for other cities and countries. www.boxpark.co.uk

Treves & Hyde

Treves & Hyde is more than just a Restaurant. The first thing you see when you arrive is a huge Texan smoker and Argentine Grill that dominates the front terrace where tables and umbrellas between planters have found a sun spot between the buildings. Here they produce a ready to go menu perfect for lunch and prepare the slow cooked food for roasts cooked gently over oak, chestnut and apple wood.

Fucina

Fucina’s priority is to make sure that their food is always the gateway for customers to experience and enjoy the diversity of taste inherent in Italian cooking. A sculptural brick ceiling of undulating curves brings to life the inside of a traditional “old school” kitchen oven. www.fucina.co.uk

Shortlist plaque We were asked to create a memorable concept and design for the awards shortlist plaque that encapsulated this year’s theme of ‘Soundscape’. The Shortlisted Plaque consists of an innovative ‘tower’ model inviting the shortlisted to ‘play’ it like a musical instrument with dropping marbles - creating sound.
