“ My suggestion to those who want to do further postgraduate study is to rationally choose a programme that suits your skills and to study hard. I would also encourage students to be confident when choosing universities - many may lose opportunities to continue into masters study at top international universities due to their lack of confidence while applying.” 28

Mathematics and physics teaching for Year One students is delivered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Teaching combines the traditional Chinese systematic method of teaching, with the active learning-orientated approach typical of British universities to give you a solid foundation in mathematics that you can apply throughout the course of your degree programme and subsequent career.

EAP classes in both Year One and Year Two use a mix of authentic texts and lectures, combined with student-centred activities, discussionbased classes and tutorials. DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

BEng ARCHITECTURE

Modern China presents a wealth of exciting opportunities for architecture students. Against the backdrop of the country’s fastpaced modernisation, the Department of Architecture engages with the challenges and contradictions of architecture in China in an open-minded and forward-thinking manner. Our students benefit from the experiences of our highly international academic staff, and seek answers to the questions facing both local and international architecture today. As academics and architects we involve ourselves in real debates, challenge common perceptions and evaluate traditions. Our unique location in Suzhou allows in-depth explorations of the dynamics of urban life and designed spaces. Confronted with the city’s past and engaged in its present, our students are guided to design the future.

40

“The Department of Architecture offered me an incredible sense of belonging and I enjoyed the four years of study there. With help from academic staff, I prepared my applications for further studies on professional master of architecture programmes, and I received offers from McGill University, the University of Waterloo, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the University of Virginia and a PhD offer from the University of Texas A&M.” ZHIFAN BIAN ALUMNA BEng ARCHITECTURE

41

BEng ARCHITECTURE

The BEng Architecture programme aims to provide you with a comprehensive foundation in architecture. Through architectural design tasks you will be guided in developing an understanding of the importance of human needs and desires, as well as developing creative and responsible responses, by taking into account the social, cultural, ecological, economic as well as technological contexts within which architecture is situated.

RIBA VALIDATION The BEng Architecture programme a ec e t e r t r ra e of its kind at a Chinese university to receive validation by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), thus demonstrating XJTLU’s commitment to providing world-class, internationally recognised education to students from China and abroad. The Royal Institute commended the Department of Architecture and it ta r creatin a i tincti e environment in which students learn from an international and Chinese context with an ambition to produce a new type of graduate, with an emphasis on human-centred architecture, for the emerging global context.”

DEPARTMENT OF URBAN PLANNING AND DESIGN The Department of Urban Planning and Design is a dynamic and international department that combines the best of urban planning and design theory, with the specifics of practice in the rapidly urbanising Chinese environment. Owing to XJTLU’s unique location and education system, this department provides students one of the most fascinating urban planning environments in the world. Students studying urban planning and design develop understanding of the processes of spatial change in the built and natural environments and engage the arguments for intervening in these processes. Students develop the knowledge and skills to analyse, critique and ultimately contribute to the sustainability of urban and rural development both in China and around the world.

BA URBAN PLANNING AND DESIGN

As the size of the human population increases, cities now need to respond to a range of complex urban phenomena including rapid expansion and urban shrinkage. These complex issues demand more sophisticated solutions in order to achieve sustainable development. Students learning urban planning and design need to understand not only the processes of spatial change in the built and natural environments, but also study the arguments for intervening in these processes. Students based at XJTLU have the unique chance to study at the heart of what is one of the world’s most fascinating classrooms: China. PROGRESSION SCHOLARSHIPS

“I originally planned to study in the UK, but I thought that studying in China would provide more job opportunities, that it would be good to experience the market in China first-hand and also learn Chinese. XJTLU is a great place and you can get degrees from both Liverpool and XJTLU. There’s a real international atmosphere, making it easy to make friends from different countries. The scholarship opportunity made the decision to join XJTLU an easy one.” MARIA CHRISTOFORIDOU ALUMNA BA MARKETING
