What does it mean to be a part of the Student Academy Board of Directors? “I highly recommend running for a Student Board position if you're interested in PA advocacy and being a representative voice for PA students. I've really enjoyed working with such an amazing group, all of whom are interested in making positive changes for future PAs and the profession in general."- Stephen Lewia, President-elect “The Student Board allows you a front row seat to work with and learn from the best on how to advocate for the PA profession. Serving on the Board enhanced my PA school experience 100%.” – Emma Reeve, Director of Student Communications “I think it’s not only a great opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience on a national level, but also a great way to network and build life-long relationships.”- Phillip Foster, South Central Regional Director

Who is eligible to run for a position? Any AAPA student member in good academic standing who is currently attending an accredited PA program may run for a position on the Student Academy Board of Directors. The chief delegate position requires previous HOD experience. Pre-declaring for a position Candidates who wish to pre-declare must submit the following by Wednesday, April 4:  Complete the candidate application and attach the following: o A signed program director form (located at the end of this document); o A current headshot; o A one-page platform statement articulating why students should elect you to represent their interests, and what leadership skills and experiences you bring to the Board. Pre-declaring is important, but not required. The advantage of pre-declaring is you will have greater visibility to AOR representatives by informing them well in advance of your intentions and making them aware of your leadership skills. Platform statements are posted online on the AOR page, and shared with AOR representatives via email in May. Any student who decides to run after April 4 will need to declare their candidacy at the start of the AOR meeting on May 19. A signed program director statement and a platform statement must be emailed to the Student Academy Staff Adviser prior to the beginning of the AOR meeting on May 19. Student Academy Board of Directors Expectations All Student Academy Board members are required to attend conference calls, to communicate regularly with the Student Academy Staff Adviser and students via email, and to participate in ad-hoc projects in collaboration with AAPA’s strategic goals. The time commitment for these responsibilities on average is four to six hours per week. If elected, you will represent AAPA and the Student Academy and should conduct yourself accordingly. Travel to Alexandria, Va., for one in-person board meeting in the fall and to Conference 2019 in Denver is required. Reasonable travel expenses are covered by AAPA. Planning on running for a position? Consider the following:  Newly elected Student Academy Board members must stay at Conference 2018 through the afternoon of Tuesday, May 22 to attend orientation and participate in Student Academy meetings.  Discuss running for office with your PA program director, as this individual’s approval is required to be considered for any position and their support will be important to you.  Talk with your family, significant other, and classmates. Being involved with the Student Academy requires your time and dedication for one to two years depending on the position.  Consider the dates of Student Academy meetings as they might conflict with rotations, graduation, or work. Student leaders must negotiate time off from rotations and/or studies and make up the time lost from studying and clinical rotations while away at meetings, so consider your course load over the next year. Student leaders 3/1/2018

are also expected to attend evening conference calls, which are determined by the workload of the Student Board. o Student Board Meeting: TBD, Fall 2018 in Alexandria, VA o Conference 2019: May 18-22 in Denver, Colorado
