Traditional Worship On this Pentecost Sunday, exactly fifty days after Easter, we open the worship service with the sound of a rushing wind and hearing voices in languages we do not know, reminiscent of that day of Pentecost long ago. The portion ends with the English translation of what each of the languages said. The opening hymn, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, refers to Pentecost with the phrase, “sung by flaming tongues above.” Then as we continue on in the Year of the Book, we look today at the book of Psalms. The Scripture passages from Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is the first one every Jewish boy and girl memorizes. It is a catechism in itself! Each of the twentytwo sections of the chapter begins with a successive letter from the Hebrew alphabet beginning with aleph (‫)א‬. Our readings come from the second and fifth letters. The anthem is a setting of Psalm 121 and the closing hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 149. The Hebrew Bible Scriptures continue to provide much structure to today’s worship as the concluding choral response is from John Rutter’s setting of the Aaronic Blessing, (The Lord bless you and keep you…) Like Epiphany, Pentecost was a clear and powerful message to the Jews and to all peoples, that the redemption from the Lord was for all peoples, all tribes, and all nations. As the Holy Spirit is poured out, God brings transformation, then and now. Listen for His voice this morning as you engage in worship. -Dr. Dan Sharp

YEAR OF THE BOOK! THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1.

Have you ever desired something that didn’t come to pass? Were you disappointed? If so, how did you deal with that disappointment? Was there a lesson you learned as you came to terms with your disappointment?

2. Under what condition will God give you the “desire of your heart?” 3. What does it mean to trust (v. 3) or delight (v. 4) in God? 4. This chapter begins with a warning against fretting over those who are evil and being envious of those who do wrong (v. 1). Why should we not fret or be jealous. 5. How can an eternal perspective help us deal with the events in life that seem unfair, especially when the seemingly wicked prosper? How can we be reminded to keep the eternal perspective, and not get trapped in jealousy? 6. As we align our desires with God, and we delight in the things that are pleasing to Him, what kind of witness could that offer to those around us? 7. What is one thing you can do this week to better align your heart and desires with the desires of God? How can you be accountable to someone to ensure it happens this week? *This week's Year of the Book reading: Hosea 1 - Obadiah 1
