Less than 18 months ago, Lachlan Hindrum, 16, didn’t know what a first aid competition was. Lachlan, from Launceston took 3rd place in the individual category competitions at the St John Ambulance Australia National Cadet Competitions last month. Lachlan joined the Cadets to help him prepare for a career as a paramedic, and he says that he would recommend St John Cadets for anybody planning a career in a health profession. Lachlan was supported by his Tasmanian team mates: Luke Harris (Team Leader), Vanessa Henry (Cadet State Officer), Aden Roberts and Wade Wilson.

THE 1923 MEMORIAL PLAQUE AT THE ST JOHN JERUSALEM EYE HOSPITAL SHEIK JARRAH, EAST JERUSALEM

Ian Howie-Willis, Historical Adviser to the Office of the Priory of St John Ambulance Australia, I recently wrote to Isla Richards, , the London-based

fundraiser for the St John Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group, seeking information for the paper I will be presenting to the 20th annual seminar of the St John Ambulance Historical Society of Australia on 4 May. My paper is on Sir Edmund Lechmere (1826–1894), who purchased the St John’s Gate property for the Order in 1874, and almost single-handedly established the Order’s Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem in 1882. I was aware that soon after Sir Edmund’s death (either late 1894 or early 1895), to commemorate his achievement the Order installed a marble memorial tablet in the courtyard of the first hospital, on the Bethlehem Road just outside the Old City of Jerusalem. Since then the Hospital has changed locations twice — in 1948 and in 1960, when the present Hospital in Sheik Jarrah was established. I emailed Isla to see if she could tell me whether or not the 1894–1895 Lechmere memorial tablet had survived; and, if so, if she could send me a photograph. Because of Isla’s absence on maternity leave, my email was answered by Marie-Claire Boyle of the Eye Hospital Group’s Charterhouse Mews office in London. Marie-Claire obligingly referred my request to the Hospital Group’s two CEOs, Ahmad Ma’ali and Peter Khoury in Jerusalem. Within a couple of days, I received not just one but two photos of marble memorial tablets bearing Lechmere’s name, both at the Hospital’s Sheik Jarrah campus in East Jerusalem. Neither of these tablets is the original 1894–1895 Lechmere memorial. Apparently that was destroyed when Turkish troops partially demolished the original Hospital in the weeks before British troops captured Jerusalem in November 1917. The Turks had tried

to blow up the Hospital building, which had been closed temporarily for the duration of World War I. The Hospital was then extensively reconstructed and eventually reopened in February 1919. To replace the lost Lechmere tablet, the Order installed a new memorial at the Hospital in 1923, the one pictured below, left. This was not, however, a memorial for Lechmere alone but recorded the names of other early supporters of the Hospital as well. Now rather battered and weather-beaten, having survived two more wars (the 1948 and 1967 Arab–Israeli conflicts) and two relocations, the 1923 memorial is situated at the front of the present (1960) Hospital in Sheik Jarrah. Lechmere’s name is also recorded on another stone tablet at the present Hospital. This is the Honour Roll of past Hospitallers of the Order. With the confirmation of Dr David Verity as the current Hospitaller, 18 individuals have held the position in the 136 years since the Hospital was established in 1882. Lechmere was the second, and his name is in the panel second from the left in the top row of the photo at the right above. The Honour Roll is currently located in the cloisters of the Hospital. And so the hunt for a photograph of the Lechmere memorial has served to strengthen the ties between the Eye Hospital Group and our Australian Historical Society. In sharing this story with Spotlite, I acknowledge with gratitude the prompt and productive assistance he received from Marie-Claire Boyle, Ahmad Ma’ali and Peter Khoury.

8MARCH#PRESSFORPROGRESS For over 130 years, Australian women have been integral to the growth and strength of St John Ambulance. To recognise the achievements of the women who have contributed to St John, and for those who continue to do so, celebrate them during International Women's Day on 8 March, in your office or division. St John encourages and promotes diversity and inclusion, and is actively working on establishing a gender balance on the various committees, programs and groups within the organisation.

CONGRATULATIONS, ISLA RICHARDS Many Spotlite readers will remember meeting Isla Richards, the London-based fundraiser for the St John Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group, who attended the St John Ambulance Australia Members’ Convention in Brisbane in 2015. Isla still works for the St John Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group at its London office in Charterhouse Mews, Clerkenwell (around the corner from St John’s Gate). However, Isa is currently on maternity leave, and has recently given birth to a beautiful little golden-haired daughter, Ivy. Isla expects to return to work soon, during March. On behalf of all readers of Spotlite, we congratulate Isla and her partner, Arran, on the birth of Ivy. And we say 'Welcome, dear wee Ivy, into the big wide world of St John!'

LEADERSHIP UPDATE Provides information and tips for leaders and managers in St John Peter LeCornu KStJ

Respond calmly when someone challenges your data We’d like to think of data as neutral: analysis just lays out the facts. But sometimes your analysis (and the story it tells) can upset a colleague or client. If you’re attacked for bringing hard truths to light, try to take the perspective of the person you’ve angered. Are they responding so forcefully because they really care about the outcome? However poorly delivered, is any of their criticism valid? Collect more data that addresses their concerns specifically—otherwise, you’ll just talk past each other. And try to view your challenger as an ally rather than as an opponent. Find a way to collaborate, because once you have their buy-in, they’ll be invested in the joint investigation. Then you can channel the energy that prompted their passionate response.

During your next presentation, use your hands to project confidence When you’re in front of an audience, you want to project confidence. But when you’re nervous, your hands often flit about and fidget. Use one of these positions to keep your hands still.

• HOLD THE BALL. Gesture as if you are holding a basketball between your hands. This movement, a Steve Jobs favourite, displays confidence and control, as if you have the facts at your fingertips.

• PALMS UP. Turning your hands up indicates openness and honesty, and it shows that you’re willing to connect with the people you’re speaking to, whether it’s one person or a crowd of thousands.

• PYRAMID. Keep your hands still by clasping them together in a relaxed pyramid. Beware of overusing this position or pairing it with domineering or arrogant facial expressions. The idea is to show that you’re relaxed, not smug.

Make achieving your long-term goals more fun in the short term Achieving a long-term objective, such as getting in shape, paying off debt, or switching careers, takes persistence. Recent research has found something that can help: incorporating immediate benefits into your pursuit of longer-term goals. Make the short-term activities fun. If you want to work-out more, select a fitness class that you enjoy. If you want to eat healthier, build a diet around healthy foods that you actually like to eat. Making activities more enjoyable may help you make progress in your goals. And take time to reflect on the enjoyment: if you’re eating a food you enjoy, focus more on the positive taste than the health benefit.

Motivate your team by connecting their work to what matters All managers need to motivate their employees, but many struggle to get it right. Bosses looking to deliver an effective pep talk should explain why the work they are asking people to do is important. How do the employees’ tasks connect to the organisation’s purpose? Point out ways your team is making a real difference for customers, the community, or each other. Or yconnect your employees’ responsibilities to their personal aspirations. A fast-food restaurant manager could tell teenage workers, 'One of our company goals is to provide good, stable jobs so that you have money to help your families and save for college'. Research shows that connecting work to meaning is the toughest part of a pep talk to deliver, but getting it right is essential to motivating your team.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 1 & 2 TRAINING — VIA WEBINARS Peter Le Cornu has been volunteering time for the past few years to teach the very popular, and free, online training program, Leadership and Management (parts 1 & 2). The program is normally run over a weekend but can be run with 10 x 2 hour webinars (the latter delivery suits our members who find it difficult to attend weekend classes). Completing both courses gives members the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management. Talk to your training manager if you're interested in participating in the next round of training.
