A MESSAGE FROM THE TRADITIONAL OWNERS On behalf of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, I welcome you to our Country, now known as Cairns. For generations, Cairns has continued to be a meeting place for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, a gateway to Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. CONNECTION TO COUNTRY “When we are on Country, we flourish” First Peoples’ share a life force with their ancestors who created the land and waters. A bloodline to Country that is essential to health and wellbeing, cultural survival, economic sustainability, community empowerment and control. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to embrace the worldview that their ancestors gave them, a sovereignty that was never ceded.

2O18 CIAF ART AWARDS CIAF Art Awards are presented to support the professional development of Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists exhibited within the curated Art Fair exhibition (Shed 3 of Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal). Winners announced on Opening night Judges for 2O18 Beau James, Manager of National Maritime Museum Indigenous Programs Bruce McLean, Curator of Indigenous Australian Art, QLD Gallery of Modern Art Natalie King, Australian curator and writer Premier’s Award for Excellence $15,OOO awarded to the artist for most outstanding work. Proudly supported by the Queensland Government

Cairns Airport Innovation Award $1O,OOO awarded to the artist that presents a revolutionary experience through medium, narrative or practice. Cairns Regional Council Art Centre Award - $1O,OOO awarded to most outstanding response to the CIAF theme by a QLD Indigenous Art Centre. Ports North Photography Award $5,OOO awarded to artist’s response to theme on photographic medium Lendlease Emerging Artist Award - $5,OOO recognising work by an emerging artist. Fibre Optics NQ People’s Choice Award - $5,OOO awarded to the artist whose work receives the most votes by the general public during CIAF. Don’t forget to vote over the weekend at CIAF.

CIAF OPENING NIGHT CIAF Opening Night is an evening of celebration and culture where guests, exhibitors, artists and Elders come together to launch CIAF 2O18. Along with the Art Awards presentation, the evening’s entertainment with Electric Fields, the traditional Yidinji dancers, Seisia Kayin Thithuyil dance group and a special performance by Miriki with the Northern Pomo tribe from Northern California, take place on the outdoor stage in the beautiful surrounds of Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. Guests will enjoy fine food from MEET EAT REPEAT pop-up vendors, drinks and fireworks under the night sky. NORTH BY EAST WEST Examining the traditional and contemporary cultural bond of Torres Strait and Kimberley Coast artists entwined in the practice of pearl shell carving for adornment, cultural knowledge and ceremony. MARA- INDIGENOUS DESIGN, POLITICS AND FOOD CULTURE A wide range of traditional and contemporary objects and artefacts used in hunting and food gathering is brought together to form a large-scale visually dramatic installation. CONTINENTAL DRIFT: Black/Blak Art from South Africa and north Australia A juxtaposition of works by Indigenous artists from Queensland and South Africa, each informed by history and the artist’s own experience, as well as the cultural, social and political landscape.
