BEE-Whiz!

Quick facts about our buzzy, fuzzy friends!

There are around 25,000 known species of bee worldwide and there are probably more to be discovered! These 25,000 species can be divided into over 4000 types of bees.

Bees have two separate stomachs; one for food and another just for nectar.

A honey bee flies up to 24 km /hr or 15 mph and its wings beat 200 times per second or 12,000 beats / minute.

It takes one colony of honey bees (around 30,000 bees) to pollinate an acre of fruit trees.

The average worker bee makes about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.

Bees work very hard! They leave the hive at sunrise and return from the last flight at sunset. During these travels, the worker gathers not only nectar and pollen, but also water and propolis (bee glue). Help these bees find their way back to the hive. Make sure you stop along the way to pick up the nectar, pollen, water and propolis.

Bee.F.Fs Bees and flowers are best friends FOREVER. Connect the dots to make this bee-friendly sunflower. While bees love sunflowers a whole lot, they love these other plant varieties as well. See if you and your parents can plant some in your garden this season. There are some great instructions for an easy bee-sy herb garden on page 2! • LILACS • LAVENDER • MINT • SQUASH • TOMATOES • PUMPKINS • OREGANO • ROSEMARY • POPPIES • HONEYSUCKLE

How BEES SEE

Did you know that bumblebees have five eyes? Two compound eyes and three tiny ocelli eyes.

These eyes help the bee see the food part of the flower in a different colour than the non-food part making it easier for the bee to gather what it needs. Help this bee see the differences between these two flower beds.
