Introductio

This Program Catalogue is designed to introduce you to 4-H Canada’s national and international programs and supports available to 4-H members, 4-H clubs, 4-H volunteer leaders, and 4-H provincial associations. Programs are offered throughout the year and specific dates, deadlines and details can be found at the back of this Program Catalogue.

4-H Canada 4-H Canada empowers young Canadians to become skilled, engaged, and responsible leaders who are passionate about making meaningful contributions to the world around them. We provide a safe, fun, and inclusive environment that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their community, on their country, and around the world. Established in 1913, 4-H is one of Canada’s longest-running and most respected youth organizations! We are a youthserving organization focused on the goal of helping young Canadians “Learn To Do By Doing” in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment. We believe in nurturing responsible, engaged, and confident leaders who are committed to positively impacting communities across Canada and around the world. 4-H Canada is made up of over 25,000 members and 7,700 volunteers across the country. Our volunteers are actually called leaders—and for good reason. We are an organization built around leadership. By providing 4-H’ers with mentors and role models who lead by example, we give youth the opportunity to enjoy meaningful, positive experiences that build confidence, positive self-identity, self-esteem and a sense of achievement.

4-H Pledge A pledge is a promise. In 4-H, we commit to our pledge and start every club meeting with it as a reminder of what we hope to achieve within 4-H and beyond!

I PLEDGE My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service, My HEALTH to better living, For my club, my community, and my country.

4-H Motto Learn To Do By Doing Learning through experience is a key objective of 4-H. At all levels of 4-H, members are encouraged to learn through active participation.

Leadership Development Pillars 4-H offers a wide range of programs to our members and they are organized within four leadership development pillars:

4

4-H Canada Program Catalogue

Positive Youth Development -H Canada invests in a bright future for today’s young people with a mandate centred 4 on Positive Youth Development. Positive Youth Development (PYD) is a globally recognized and research based approach to youth development that considers young people as assets and partners in the community, and not as problems who need solving. PYD is not an activity or program, but rather a general approach to all 4-H programming. We provide a safe, fun, and inclusive environment by following this Positive Youth Development Formula:

Positive values Sense of purpose

Planning and decisionmaking

Safe inclusive fun environment Caring adults Learn to do by doing!

Responsibility I AM A 4-H’ER AND THIS IS MY 4-H.

Skill mastery

Leadership development

This Positive Youth Development Formula is our recipe for building responsible, caring, and contributing young people who are empowered to be successful through our supportive 4-H structures. In the middle of the “honeycomb”, are the 4-H essential elements. If we are living up to these promises. our members might say:

“I feel safe, comfortable and able to participate. I am also having fun!” Safe, inclusive, fun environment Caring adults

Learn to do by doing!

“I feel supported and valued by the adults involved.” “There are opportunities for me to try things out myself to learn from my direct experience and to reflect on my actions.” On the outside are the key assets that we believe 4-H is in the position to cultivate and foster in 4-H members. They are what we are thinking about when we develop and evaluate our programming. 4-H Canada Program Catalogue

Workshops will culminate with the annual debate where 4-H members will construct insightful arguments, and practise skills of persuasion and public speaking. Ultimately youth will learn more about Canada, its government and themselves. The theme for 2018 is Global Citizens. Programming will explore what it means to be a global citizen, to be aware of the wider world, and the values of diversity and equality. We will examine Canadian contributions, our impacts on the world, and lots more! The Citizenship Congress will take place at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa.

4-H Canada Science Fair

“Sparking Science, Cultivating Curiosity” is the goal of the new 4-H Canada Science Fair. Entering its third year, 4-H youth members (in grades 7-12) can choose to work individually or in partners, to create a science fair project around any theme that interests them. They can conduct an experiment, design an invention or perform a research study. Some members may explore a topic that compliments their 4-H club project, or they may discover something completely unrelated! There are three rounds to the 4-H Canada Science Fair:

1

Virtual Round The first round of the 4-H Canada Science Fair involves members submitting their projects online where they will be judged virtually. Projects will follow normal science project protocol, but instead of displays, members create PowerPoint presentations that are shared with judges for assessment. Resources will be made available to assist members with their projects and prior to the January deadline there will be at least two different online, live Q&A sessions—one in October and one in November.

2

In-person Round The second round of the 4-H Canada Science Fair will involve the semi-finalists travelling to compete in an in-person science fair. They will be able to present their projects to judges, meet 4-Hers from across the country, and participate in science programming. Finalists with the winning projects will move on to compete in the Canada Wide Science Fair.

3

Canada-Wide Science Fair The final round of the 4-H Canada Science Fair flows into the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), managed by Youth Science Canada. The Science Fair involves about 450 students from across Canada, competing with their science fair projects, along with lively science-themed programming. The Canada-Wide Science Fair boasts nearly $1,000,000 in prizes and is considered the ‘Olympics of Science Fairs’ in Canada!
