Introductio

This Program Catalogue is designed to introduce you to 4-H Canada’s national and international programs and supports available to 4-H members, 4-H clubs, 4-H volunteer leaders, and 4-H provincial associations. Programs are offered throughout the year and specific dates, deadlines and details can be found at the back of this catalogue.

4-H Canada 4-H Canada empowers young Canadians to become skilled, engaged, and responsible leaders who are passionate about making meaningful contributions to the world around them. Established in 1913, 4-H is one of Canada’s longest-running and most respected youth organizations! We are a youthserving organization focused on the goal of helping young Canadians “Learn To Do By Doing” in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment. We believe in nurturing responsible, engaged, and confident leaders who are committed to positively impacting communities across Canada and around the world. 4-H Canada is made up of over 25,000 members and 7,700 volunteers across the country. Our volunteers are actually called leaders—and for good reason. We are an organization built around leadership. By providing 4-H’ers with mentors and role models who lead by example, we give youth the opportunity to enjoy meaningful, positive experiences that build confidence, positive self-identity, self-esteem, and a sense of achievement.

4-H Pledge A pledge is a promise. In 4-H, we commit to our pledge and start every club meeting with it as a reminder of what we hope to achieve within 4-H and beyond!

I PLEDGE My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service, My HEALTH to better living, For my club, my community, and my country. 3

Leadership Development Pillars 4-H offers a wide range of programs to our members and they are organized within four leadership development pillars:

4

4-H Canada Program Catalogue

Positive youth development (PYD) Positive youth development (PYD) is a globally recognized and research-based approach to youth development that considers young people as assets and partners in the community, and not as problems who need solving. PYD does not focus on one single activity or program, but rather is a general approach and philosophy incorporated into all of our 4-H programming in Canada. Using the 4-H Canada Positive Youth Development Formula, we are building responsible, caring and contributing young people who are empowered to be successful through our supportive structure.

At the centre of the 4-H Canada Positive Youth Development Formula are our 4-H Canada essential elements. We know we are achieving these core ingredients when we hear members saying statements like:

CareersontheGrow.ca – Job Board The Careers On The Grow CAHRC Agri-Job Match board is an integral part of the larger 4-H Canada Careers On The Grow program and is a centralized, searchable site for employers and job seekers to seek and post opportunities. We are dedicated to promoting opportunities for 4-H’ers to explore potential careers in agriculture and agri-food, and get the hands-on training, experience, resources and contacts that will help them make the transition from the classroom to the workplace.

4-H Canada Science Fair

“Sparking Science, Cultivating Curiosity” is the goal of the new 4-H Canada Science Fair. Entering its fourth year, 4-H youth members (in grades 7-12) can choose to work individually or in partners to create a science fair project around any theme that interests them. They can conduct an experiment, design an invention or perform a research study. Some members may explore a topic that complements their 4-H club project, or they may discover something completely unrelated! There are three rounds to the 4-H Canada Science Fair:

1

2

Virtual Round

The first round of the 4-H Canada Science Fair involves members submitting their projects online where they will be judged virtually. Projects will follow normal science project protocol, but instead of displays, members create PowerPoint presentations that are shared with judges for assessment. Resources will be made available to assist members with their projects and prior to the January deadline there will be at least three different online, live Q&A sessions.

The second round of the 4-H Canada Science Fair will involve the semifinalists travelling to compete in an in-person science fair. They will be able to present their projects to judges, meet 4-Hers from across the country, and participate in science programming around the venue (TBD). The winning projects will move on to compete in the CanadaWide Science Fair.
