Skyward/Family Access Overview • Skyward/Family Access is an online tool for you and your student to use to track their grades • We will also be posting progress reports and report cards here this year (paper copies will not be sent home) • Access: https://skyward.allenisd.org

How to Access: Google Drive, Google Classroom, Online Textbooks, Skyward, and Other Classroom Resources At Home

Tip: Make sure you are using Google Chrome web browser when working with Google products. Step 1: Go to https://portal.allenisd.org Step 2: Login on the Single Sign on page ○ ○

Step 3: You will be logged into this landing page. From there you can select whichever application you want to use.

Homework ● Students will have up to 60 minutes of homework per night in 6th grade ● Students are expected to be reading in their self-selected novels 20-30 minutes every night. ○ Research shows a direct correlation to student performance with time spent reading

Allen ISD Dress Code A few dress code reminders: • No tight or form fitting pants, stretch pants, yoga pants or leggings may be worn unless worn under a skirt, dress, skort, tunic or long shirt that is mid-thigh or longer and complies with the dress code. • Short length of shorts must be mid-thigh or longer • Tank tops – must be three finger length in width

How to Volunteer • If you want to volunteer here at school or chaperone a field trip you need to complete a background check with the district. • A background check has to be completed before you are able to volunteer or go on a field trip. Dismissal Reminders • In advance: If you have a change in how your student is going home for the day please send a handwritten note or email to the all 6th grade teachers (in case of a substitute) to communicate the change. • Day of after 10am: If you have a change in how your student is going home the day of, please contact the front office. – Preston Elementary: 972-908-8780

• Our math daily schedule (including concepts learned and homework assigned) can be found on my website. • There are online games broken down by concept on my website. Students also have access to Think Through Math (login information on website) and Buzzmath (login information is located in their spiral) for extra practice at home.

• Vocabulary will be emphasized in the science curriculum in a variety of ways. • All students will have the opportunity to participate in science fair this year.

World Cultures Overview This year in Social Studies we will be studying World Cultures. Key Concepts: We study the continents around the world and focus on their history, geography, economy, government and culture. These are the specific topics: • • • • • • •

Basic Geography and Culture Latin America Europe Asia Middle East Africa Australia/Antarctica/Oceania

Students will investigate historical and contemporary events in these societies and understand the relationships that exist among world cultures. All student resources will be shared with them via Google Classroom.

English/Language Arts Overview Major Focuses: Curriculum: – Fiction elements and text – SpringBoard structures – Holt Literature Book – Nonfiction elements and text – Various novels and expository structures texts – Figurative Language – Holes, by Louis Sachar – Using text evidence – Drawing Conclusions and Inferring – Literary Terms – Writing narrative and expository pieces – Presentation skills

How to help your student be successful: 1. Set up an atmosphere that fosters success. 2. Allow them to learn from their mistakes. 3. Teach them to self- advocate. 4. Talk to them often. Keep those lines of communication open. 5. Check grades regularly. 6. Know that we are your partners in this journey.
