Keynote Speaker: Roy L. Alson, PhD, MD, FACEP, began his EMT career in the 1970’s as a responder. As a Medical Director in North Carolina EMS, he manages 800 firefighters, EMTs and rescue personnel and over 20 agencies. He is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, a Regional Level I Trauma Center and Burn Center.

The Wilz Trauma Symposium was started by the medical staff at St. Mary-Corwin to honor Dr. Bill Wilz who served as the Trauma Director for St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center until his death in 1999. He received his undergraduate degree at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and attended medical school at Georgetown University, where he graduated in the top ten percent of his class. He did his residency in General Surgery at Keesler A.F.B. in Biloxi, Mississippi and was the Chief of Surgery at U.S.A.F. Hospital at Sheppard A.F.B. in Wichita Falls, Texas until he moved to Pueblo, Colorado and opened a practice in General Surgery. Wilz is remembered fondly as a teacher, colleague and friend.

As Medical Director of Special Operations Response Team, a non-profit disaster medical response organization, he led the team’s response to numerous disasters at the state and national level including Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina. He serves on numerous committees and councils in various leadership roles, is active in non-profit organizations, and is a contributing author in many texts.

He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, and a PhD and MD from Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of Emergency Medicine.
