“CATATAN JEMBATAN MASA” Not many of us know the diversity of Surabaya. This city’s abundant uniqueness and potential have not been fully under the public’s radar and its ubiquity requires hard work to make it to the known. Ironic it is, knowing that Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia. Fresh initiatives are needed to bring such publication into reality, for which a creative work in a form of media will take the courage. This media is expected to “stimulate” us to take an integrated action for the beloved city. Inspiring the tagline: “Catatan Jembatan Masa”, our work is complementary records of Surabaya city life through 4 (four) key sections presented in visual storytelling style, namely: PESONA – SAPA – ICIP ICIP – TEROPONG. SUR:VIBE is expected to become a public sphere, stimulating force, as well as a written guide to make sense of and delve into Surabaya.

like?”

aybe this question sounds mbencekno (annoying): “What do people of Surabaya look

I don’t want to be racist, but it is indeed hard to find the nyel (real) people of Suroboyo (Javanese for Surabaya). It is true that this kind of people is hardly found. Surabaya people are obviously wong Jowo (Javanese people), but it is actually more than that, rek (fellas)! According to Purnawan Basundoro, a historian from Universitas Airlangga Surabaya, based on the ethnic grouping in the 20th century, Surabaya people are divided into 3 layers. The first is Dutch and people of other European countries. The second is people from the Foreign East such as Malay, Chinese, Arabian and Indian. The third is the Native or Javanese.

As it grows, Surabaya is populated by 4 large ethnics: Javanese, Chinese, Madurese and Arabian. It is interesting that those ethnics dominate and have significant impact on Surabaya’s economy and culture. Being quite difference from any other cities in Indonesia, Surabaya can be a good example of how its multicultural society manages to live side by side in peace and tolerance.

This more or less inspired the making of a documentary movie titled “Empat Wajah Surabaya” (Four Faces of Surabaya). It is an appealing picture that tries to promote the honest reality of Surabaya society. This 45-minute documentary movie is a collaboration of Visual Communication Design of UPN East Java, supported by Independen Film Surabaya, Institute Francaise Indonesia (IFI), Surabaya Urban Vibe and Surabaya Punya Cerita, put together by Fadli Zaky as the director.

“As it grows, Surabaya has 4 big ethnics, they are Javanese, Chinese, Madurese and Arabian.”

SOEKARNO IS SURABAYA I

Dhahana Adi

t is only about 5m x 14m, but it witnessed the beginning of his life story. He was born as Koesno Sosro Sukarno. See, a lot of us don’t know it, right? It was given by his father, R. Soekemi Sosrodihardjo. The last name ‘Sukarno’ was added because when he was a child, he was sickly even though he was physically strong. After marrying Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai, R. Soekemi Sosrodihardjo moved from Bali to Surabaya as a teacher and stayed at this house. The atmosphere at Pandean Street is peaceful and quiet, contrary to the one in front of it, Peneleh Street, or Gemblongan Street and Kramat Gantung across Kali Mas river that are always full of crossing vehicles. None of us ever thought that this three-meter-wide village street takes you to the first ever home of The Proclamator’s. Today, the Surabaya City Governemnt has placed an inscription at the end of Pandean IV Street as an initiative of Soekarno Institute in 2011. It’s unfortunate that only a few of the visitors put much concern for this historical house. “A lot of people just come and go. The job of taking care and cleaning it is still on us” said Mrs. Jamilah, owner of the house. It’s no other than a matter of maintenance cost, a classic situation faced by the inhabitants of historical buildings throughout Indonesia.

DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTE FRANCAIS INDONESIA, SURABAYA

Tap to visit!

F

or the first time in my life, I set foot in a country named Indonesia. Surabaya is the place where I am assigned as director of Institute Francaise Indonesia for the next 4 years (until 2021). From my point of view, this city (Surabaya) is similar to Marseille, a city on the South Eastern shore of France. Both are harbor city. I have seen how Kalimas and Tanjung Perak harbors hold a vital part of Surabaya’s civilization. I crossed to Madura by ferry and cross over the elegant Suramadu Bridge. Tres bien! I saw those yachts, traditional boats and also the legendary Syahbandar Tower; what a beautiful blend of cultural heritage. Calm, warm, and friendly for everyone. Besides, I fell in love with the people of Surabaya. Despite having many different characters and backgrounds, they still able to live together in tolerance. Their friendly and hospitable attitude brought me closer to them. An easy example of Surabaya people is bonek. For me, bonek is not only Persebaya’s (Surabaya’s football club) supporters, but also the real picture of Surabaya people or its identity as an egalitarian city. As a football fan, I see that Persebaya is one of the pride of the city. It’s a pity to miss this when you visit Surabaya. I think there are many other things that I need to explore here, and I’m more sure that Surabaya will be one of the cities I will always long for. It’s not a coincidence that I was assigned here in Surabaya, a city full of enthusiasm and love, because Surabaya is so me. Suroboyo! Wani (a cheering word that literally means I’m not afraid)!

THE REAL PEOPLE OF SUROBOYO LIVE IN THE VILLAGES BUT NOT VILLAGE-MINDED Fandy Ragil

foto: Dokumentasi pribadi 22 SUR:VIBE - Catatan Jembatan Masa

“Hey, where have you been, cuk1 ? You still alive?” “How are you doing, cuk?”

F

or me, that is the real Suroboyo2 people. It sounds a little rude, but the word cuk indicates brotherhood between the speakers. Without any intention to nggebyah uyah (generalize), I think that Suroboyo’s people generally have been infected by Jakarta-ism (adopting Jakarta’s local language) due to the cool dialect. It is indeed cool, but it does not show the real identity of Suroboyo’s people. In my opinion, the real people of Suroboyo are those who live in the village area. I know and almost perfectly understand as during my activities in Mural Kampoong, the original Suroboyo’s people still actively use the dialect with the cuk word well preserved. People of Suroboyo coming from villages that still preserve Surabaya’s traditional local traits are those who are: honest, unhesitant, andhap asor (ethical) to older people, and undyingly solid to each other. Youth Association, as an example, is usually labeled as a youth organization that is only active during the Independence Day season. However, it is not the case at a former localization area in Putat Jaya; it is the opposite. Putat Jaya’s Youth Association is always excited and andhus (enthusiastic) when invited to do creative works to ndandhani (decorate) the village. Through Mural Kampoong Activity that I initiated with fellow muralists, we will not let our style and idealism dominate. In order to be fairer and cultivate the sense of

belonging in the Mural Kampoong activities, the team and I involve Youth Association and local residents in the making of concept and the work process. This method shows that Putat Jaya residents have established concerns about the cleanliness of their environment. One of the factors is the many people, both locals and people from other areas, that come to the mural spot to take selfies. Some spots have even been used by private media and Surabaya City’s media for photo competitions on Instagram. People of Suroboyo gak pate’en (do not really care) about the trend and what is booming at the moment regarding lu – gue3 dialect. The real Suroboyo people are the pincak pincuk (frank talkers) without forgetting the situation of whom they are talking and the good time to mention the cuk word. I am never ashamed of saying that I am a villager, but not village-minded. This is a movement, a small one for starters, but there is a hope for it to expand to other villages in Surabaya, those that have not been introduced to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) attention from private companies, let alone the Surabaya City government. I am arek Suroboyo (a Surabaya fellow), you all young people don’t just talk and complaint. You better DO something!

A common nickname used mostly by Surabaya’s males to talk to their close friends not to insult them, but to show brotherhood. It is short for a strong swear word jancuk equivalent to fuck you in English. 2 Surabaya in the Javanese language 3 ’You – I’ in Jakarta’s local language 1
