You will join a programme that matches your individual learning needs, with students typically joining either our GCSE or Functional Skills programmes. I got a place at the King’s Cross Centre and I have enjoyed my time studying here ever since. What have you enjoyed about your time at the College? I think Westminster Kingsway College is a really good College. We also go on trips and have sports activities around London. You get to meet lots of new people and make friends. Apart from enjoying the King’s Cross Centre I also really like my lessons. Our teachers are very nice and kind and always make time to listen to us in class. Employer Voice Levi Roots Entrepreneur & Patron of the Westminster Kingsway College Enterprise Society What did you want to do? I was always interested in music but I didn’t do very well in many other subjects. In 2006 I realised I had to come out of my comfort zone, away from music and promote the sauce I created for the first time. I had to give my sauce a name, give it an identity. I decided to combine my 30 years experience in music with my new business and came up with the name ‘Reggae Reggae Sauce’. How was your experience on Dragon’s Den? Scary! Dragons are fire breathing and the Dragons on the show were no exception. I had to offer them a unique business pitch. I went on the show with my guitar and impressed them. Can you give any advice for starting up a business? Firstly, you need to have an idea or a dream and you need to be passionate about it. You need to have a unique selling point to be able to convince a consumer to buy your product. My unique selling point was my music and my sauce. What advice would you give students? Above all else you need to focus, focus, focus!

y a w h t a P t h ig R Choosing the VOCATIONAL PATHWAY LEARNING SHOULD BE FUN, NOT DAUNTING. IN OUR EXPERIENCE, STUDENTS ENJOY VOCATIONAL PROGRAMMES BECAUSE THEY CAN SPECIALISE IN SUBJECTS LINKED WITH WORK THAT THEY ARE INTERESTED IN.

BTECs, UAL or Vocational Diplomas BTEC, UAL (University of the Arts London) or Vocational Diplomas enable you to develop practical skills that could help you secure a job in the future. Answers to assignments could be written or using practical skills, such as film clips, project proposals, business plans and structured databases. We are continually developing the Diplomas in response to the needs and skills required by employers but you are always given clear guidelines so you know what you have to achieve and how to do this. This means that the qualifications stay relevant to the industry that you want to work in. Each course is made up of units. The number of units you will take depends on the Level of the qualification that you choose to study. You are assessed regularly during your course, so you can analyse and improve your own performance. The College offers courses at all Levels. You may have already taken a Level 2 BTEC First in school alongside your core GCSE subjects. Level 2 courses come in two sizes; the Level 2 Diploma, which offers core and specialist units covering the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for employment within the sector you choose, and the shorter Level 2 BTEC First Certificate, which is for anyone seeking initial experience of a vocational area.

22

Level 3 vocational courses are designed as specialist qualifications for those who have a clear idea of their future career or who want to go to university/higher education. They are equivalent to A-Levels and are highly valued by universities, further education colleges and employers alike. Level 3 BTECs or UAL Diplomas are recommended for those who have achieved at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, or who have completed a Level 2 vocational qualification. Many of our Music and Creative Industries vocational courses are accredited by the University of the Arts London (UAL). The UAL Awarding Body is the only specialist art, design and creative industries awarding organisation in England. UAL works collaboratively with Colleges, employers and others to ensure we develop and award the best possible specialist qualifications.

Foundation Learning Foundation Learning courses are vocational, personalised programmes at Entry and Level 1. You will gain Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT, taught in a practical way using real-life situations.

Bridging Courses At Westminster Kingsway College, we offer new Bridging courses at Level 1 and Level 2 in Art & Design, Business and E-business, Health & Social Care, Public Services, Digital Media and Creative Media. Bridging courses give you the opportunity to gain up to a Level 2 qualification.

Traineeships Traineeships unlock your potential and prepare you for your future career by helping you to become ‘work ready’. These Pre-Apprenticeships provide you with work preparation training, work experience and Maths and English to enable you to go on to apply for an Apprenticeship or other opportunity. Employers provide the valuable work experience placement and interview as part of the programme.

Apprenticeships An apprenticeship is a job with training. A blend of job training with an employer and study in college that provides you with the skills you need for your chosen career. You will also earn a wage during the Apprenticeship. To be an Apprentice, you need to be employed in a suitable role in order to meet the training requirements for the sector you are completing your Apprenticeship in. If you would like to become an Apprentice and you are not already employed, our team of highly skilled employability coordinators and placement officers could support you in finding an employer who has an Apprenticeship vacancy. There are 3 different levels of Apprenticeship: • Intermediate Level Apprenticeship: working towards level 2 qualifications. • Advanced Level Apprenticeship: working towards level 3 qualifications • Higher Level Apprenticeships: working towards level 4 and above qualifications The College works with a number of employers, providing customised Apprenticeship programmes that have been developed for organisations to meet their specific training and development needs.

You will also benefit from personal and social development to prepare you for employment and working with other people.

Frequently Asked Questions AS, A2 and A-Levels

A-Level changes

A-Levels are Level 3 qualifications. If you choose A-Levels, you will study an AS in your first year and an A2 in the second year to complete the full A-Level qualification. You will need to pass your AS with at least a grade D to progress to the A2. You can choose to only study the AS because it is a qualification but the majority of students carry on to the full A-Level qualification. The College expects A-Level students to study four AS Levels in their first year and progress to three A2 Levels in their second year.

You may have heard that A-Levels are being reformed by the government. Your full A-Level will be assessed after two years of study. This is the main change that will affect all subjects at A-Level over time. These reforms will be gradual over a period of three years. In the meantime at Westminster Kingsway College, we will continue to offer the AS Level in the first year of your studies and this will be available as a standalone qualification. We will be here to guide you through the changes and answer any questions that you have at our College open days and also when you come into the College for an A-Level interview.

What are the general entry requirements for A-Levels? Three GCSEs at grade B or above plus two further GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent). At least four GCSEs must have been assessed through examination, including English Language and Maths. Please turn to the individual courses throughout this Guide and the website www.westking.ac.uk to check any additional entry requirements for your chosen subjects. What happens when I finish my AS year/first year of A-Levels at Westminster Kingsway College? You will have the option of moving on to the second year of your studies and completing your A-Level depending on your AS exam results and/or on the recommendation of your tutor and course teachers. If you show a strong aptitude for independent study in year one you will also have the opportunity to work towards the new A-Level Extended Project Qualification in the second year.

What should I do if I have completed my AS Levels or my first year of A-Level at a different school or college? We offer direct entry to the second year of A-Level courses. If you have completed an AS in any subject you will be expected to have at least a grade D in the relevant AS examinations and a good reference from your previous school or college. In many cases it is possible to transfer an AS grade from one examination board or syllabus to a different board at A2 but if you change boards you may not be able to retake AS modules to improve your grade. If you are one year into an A-Level without having taken AS you can also transfer if the exam boards are compatible. We will examine your situation carefully and discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages of transferring to the full A-Level programme at Westminster Kingsway College at Open Days or at interview.

y a w h t a P t h ig R Choosing the STUDY PROGRAMMES FOR ALL 16-18 YEAR OLDS WHATEVER COURSE YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE, IF YOU ARE AGED 16-18, YOU WILL BE ON A STUDY PROGRAMME.

What is a Study Programme? Study Programmes have been developed by the Government for all 16-18 year olds as a new, more relevant way to learn. They will ensure you receive: • A substantial qualification at Level 1, 2 or 3 e.g. a Diploma, Extended Diploma, City & Guilds qualification or other professional qualification • The opportunity to undertake work experience • If you do not have it already, GCSE A*-C English and Maths equivalent or a qualification that will help you progress towards GCSE in the future • Non-qualification activity, for example tutorial time, study skills and other enrichment activities

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is favoured by top universities in the UK. The qualification offers you the chance to carry out in-depth research into your own area of interest. Examples of past EPQ titles include ‘Rupert Murdoch’s power in the UK’, ‘The evolution of fashion from the 20th century to the 21st Century’ and ‘Staging a play about child protection’. Final submission is by 5000 word dissertation, a performance or production of a design or artefact. Students who join the EPQ have developed their skills in independent study in preparation for the demands of higher education. The EPQ is the equivalent of 1 AS Level and can be completed in the second year of studies alongside A2s.

Offering you the flexibility of studying more than one subject, you have the opportunity to build a career out of the courses that you most enjoy. AS (Advanced Subsidiary) and A-Level (Advanced) qualifications focus on traditional study skills. They normally take two years to complete full-time. A-Levels are made up of the AS Level and the A2 Level. Having successfully completed your AS year, you have two options, take the AS Level as the final qualification or continue to the second year and go for the full A-Level.

At Westminster Kingsway College, we have many A-Level subjects that achieved 100% success rates. Westminster Kingsway College has one of the largest and highest achieving A-Level departments of any further education college in the country. In 2014, we achieved the College’s highest record for the number of A-Level grade A-E passes and high grades at A and B. In addition, over 95% of our students got into their ‘first choice’ university.

You may have heard that A-Levels are being reformed by the government. These reforms will be gradual over a period of three years. In the meantime at Westminster Kingsway College, we will continue to offer the AS Level in the first year of your studies and this will be available as a standalone qualification.

Traditionally regarded as one of the most popular routes into university and employment, A-Levels form the academic pathway for a wide range of subjects, including some that you may not have studied at school.

How did you hear about Westminster Kingsway College? I lived in Spain and started researching early for a college. The one name that kept coming up with my friends and family was Westminster Kingsway College. I heard that it has a great reputation for looking after their students and producing great results so I sent in my application. It was actually the first college I applied to and I was very happy that it was in central London as it was easy to get to from Southwark, where I live. What was the highlight of your time at College? Overall I think I enjoyed what we learned both inside and outside the classroom. We got to have to great class trips and work on projects with students from other courses. I also really enjoyed my work experience at University College Hospital and Royal London Hospital. What are your plans for the future? I got higher grades than predicted and that was absolutely fantastic. I achieved two As and an A* in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. After college I will be going to University College London where I will study BSc Biomedical Sciences.

Who can do an Apprenticeship? There is no upper age limit for being an Apprentice, although the minimum age is 16 years.

What are Apprenticeships? An Apprenticeship is a job with training. A blend of ‘on’ and ‘off’ the job training that provides individuals with the skills they need for their chosen career, while earning a wage.

Westminster Kingsway College provides Apprenticeships that offer a structured training programme for those in employment who want to learn while they are working. The College also works with employers to recruit Apprentices. Traineeships unlock your potential and prepare you for your future careers by helping you to become ‘work ready’. Traineeships with Westminster Kingsway College provide the essential work preparation training, Maths and English and work experience needed to get an Apprenticeship or other job.

Apprenticeships are available across most industry sectors and are an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst working and gaining real workplace experience.

What levels of Apprenticeship are there? There are 3 different levels of Apprenticeship: • Intermediate Level Apprenticeship: working towards level 2 qualifications.

“My Apprenticeship worked really well for me. I liked the balance of working day-to-day and attending College.” Andrew Hill, Former Westminster Kingsway College Apprentice

Any business can employ an Apprentice however the funding available from the government for the Apprenticeship training is dependent on the age, previous qualifications and EU residency of the potential Apprentice. Our specialist advisors are able to assist you in making sure that you meet the relevant eligibility criteria during an Information, Advice and Guidance appointment. They can also help you decide on the level of Apprenticeship you need to be applying for. To be an Apprentice, you need to be employed in a suitable role in order to meet the training requirements for the sector you are completing your Apprenticeship in. If you would like to become an Apprentice and you are not already employed, our team of highly skilled employability coordinators and placement officers are able to support you in finding an employer who has an Apprenticeship vacancy.

• Advanced Level Apprenticeship: working towards level 3 qualifications • Higher Level Apprenticeships: working towards level 4 and above qualifications

Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Apprenticeships & Traineeships

In addition, each framework also includes English and Maths Functional Skills and most also include ICT Functional Skills. Exemptions from one or more of the Functional Skills may be available for people who have already achieved GCSEs in these subjects. Each framework will also include Employee Rights and Responsibilities, which are also sector specific. These are not separate qualifications but are embedded within the existing qualifications. Finally there are six Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) which are sometimes referred to as ‘soft skills’ that have been identified as being required by an Apprentice or, in fact, any employee, in order to be effective in the workplace. These are also embedded within the Apprenticeship framework.

Frequently Asked Questions How many hours do I need to work? The minimum hours required to become an Apprentice is 30 hours per week. How much should I be paid? There is a minimum rate per hour for Apprenticeships dependent on age, but some employers pay more than this. All vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) website will display the rate of pay.

62

Will I need to pay for this training? If you are aged 16-18, your training will be fully funded. If you are aged 19-23 your employer will be asked to provide a contribution towards your training, this is called co-funded. If you are aged over 24 then you may be eligible for co-funding depending on your individual circumstances or alternatively you may be able to apply for a 24+ loan to cover the cost of your training. What is the difference between an Intermediate Apprenticeship, an Advanced Apprenticeship and a Higher Apprenticeship? The Intermediate Apprenticeship is at a level 2 standard, the Advanced Apprenticeship is at a level 3 standard and the Higher Apprenticeship will be at level 4 or above. It is the job role and your previous level of attainment that will dictate the level of Apprenticeship you are able to complete. An Intermediate role will tend to be a role with minimum responsibility and quite process driven. An Advanced role will have responsibility for functions and/or staff and you would be required to use your own initiative, for example to sort out problems or create planning processes. A Higher role would include strategic planning and would have management responsibilities. How can I find out more? Visit us at an Open Day or go to www.westking.ac.uk/apprenticeships for more information and the latest Apprenticeship vacancies. You can also visit the National Apprenticeship Service website where there is lots of useful information for learners, parents and employers.

Student Voice Charlie Bird Apprenticeship in Live Events and Promotion How did you hear about the course? I had done my GCSEs at school and decided that I wanted to pursue a different route than going to university like everyone else. After getting some careers advice, I started looking for Apprenticeships online. I found this opportunity to work at Lord’s and Marylebone Cricket Club and study with Westminster Kingsway College. Ever since I started the course I have learnt lots of new skills especially in IT, customer service and event planning and management. I have increased in confidence during the programme and I am keen to progress to the next level. What are your future plans? I definitely want to continue my training at Lord’s and at the College by progressing to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship next year. This education route was the exact right choice for me because it is great to earn money while you learn and to get vocational experience and a qualification at the same time. I would highly recommend an Apprenticeship to others as it gives you the opportunity to learn, to earn and to get qualified. I have had a unique opportunity to undertake this Apprenticeship at an iconic venue in central London and it will definitely benefit my future career.

Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Each Apprenticeship is made up of a number of different sector specific qualifications, this is called a framework. Typically the Apprenticeship framework includes both learning taking place in the workplace (competency) and learning taking place in the classroom (knowledge).

Do I need to attend College? For the majority of Apprenticeships the answer is yes. Part of the Apprenticeship programme is for you to learn a more generic set of skills and industry specific knowledge. This is a great opportunity for you to share experiences and knowledge with other Apprentices. You will also need to study for any Functional Skills that you do not have exemptions for.

What qualification makes up an Apprenticeship?

Offering Pre-Apprenticeship courses at Levels 1 and 2, you can achieve the right qualifications and experience for your journey into work or further study with a Traineeship. All courses are 15 hours per week and include Maths, English and ICT units as well as hands-on practical work and work experience. Employers provide the valuable work experience placement and interview as part of the programme. Traineeships will normally be for 8-12 weeks long and will include a work placement and College study. Contact us for details of the latest Traineeship vacancies that we have with employers.

Alumni Voice Hanna Barrett Apprenticeship in Management “When I began my Apprenticeship with Westminster Kingsway College in 2010, I was working as a Reception Supervisor with Portico Corporate Reception Management. The Apprenticeship delivered through the college’s Employer Training team included the ILM Institute of Leadership and Management Certificate in Management. I have now been promoted to Client Services, Operations and Development Manager. I now also advise the Portico Training Academy as a result of the knowledge I have gained.

“The Apprenticeships with Westminster Kingsway College taught me many things and it gave me the understanding and increased my confidence in managing a team and dealing with certain challenges. I would recommend this Apprenticeship to others that are already supervising a team or are about to. Student Voice Adam Shah UAL Diploma Art & Design Foundation Studies What have you enjoyed most about your course? There are so many things that I could say I have really enjoyed but two skills that I’ve really developed are my drawing and sketching. When I started studying Art and Design at Westminster Kingsway College, I could barely draw. Now I can draw pictures that I am proud to show people. My course included a mixture of drawing, painting, sculpture and photography, so throughout the year I have built up loads of skills and my final project has allowed me to bring all of those different skills together. What are your plans for the future? I am now planning to go on to university and learn as much as I can about graphic design, branding, advertising and product identity. Following that I would like to travel the world to find out more about global advertising, explore different cultures and pick up as many skills as I can. My ultimate goal is to one day start my own design agency.

Art, Design & Media Exhibition at Westminster Kingsway College Art, Design and Media students transformed Westminster Kingsway College’s King’s Cross Centre with their end of year exhibition. The exhibition showcased work from Interactive Media, Digital, Fashion, Fine Art and Design students with a rich display of varying art forms. As well as static pieces, exhibition visitors could watch short films produced by the students in a screening room and interact with pieces using digital media and by wearing 3D glasses.

Christopher Bamford, UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Film and Television student, said: “One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about my course is learning how to use the cameras and developing new camera techniques using professional software, such as Premier Pro and Logic. The course has really helped me to develop my editing skills, which I used to create the film for my final project. The film I made is about my life growing up and the experiences I had due to my medical condition; I grew up with kidney disease and had a transplant seven years ago. My final piece has allowed me to tell my story through art.”

Udeme Ukpong, UAL Art & Design: Fashion Level 3 student, said: “As an International student coming to Westminster Kingsway College, I was made to feel really comfortable. Even though I hadn’t studied art before, I was encouraged by the tutors, and made to feel like I could do anything! Having come from Nigeria I am so glad I chose this College. I am now planning to progress onto university, and feel fortunate to have already received two conditional offers. My plan is to continue my studies in the UK, then return to Nigeria and eventually set up my own fashion label.”

Ryan Deanhill Former Westminster Kingsway College student “I have grown up with a love of comics and graphic novels. My dream is to publish my own line of graphic novels based on a futuristic world where each child’s behaviour is pre-determined before birth in an effort to control society. I would like to extend this to an animated series as well, which is what led me to studying digital skills at Westminster Kingsway College.” “I found it really interesting studying my course. We had students from different backgrounds and they brought different ideas and inspirations to class. Our teachers were very energetic and focused on how they taught us new skills and programs. Our department also partnered with a Korean college and they visited us to work on projects together before taking them back to display in Korea. It is because of this kind of learning that I found university and my animation degree at the University of Portsmouth a smooth transition. I really believe that it’s a Westminster Kingsway College side effect and I am proud to have studied there.”

Enterprise Festival at Westminster Kingsway College Westminster Kingsway College’s Vin2 Enterprise Society hosted their annual Enterprise Festival at the Victoria Centre to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week. Over 200 students from across London listened to entrepreneurial speakers from various industries, including Zoe Jackson from Living the Dream performing arts company, Kevin Barrett from Metro Bank, Mike Southon, a Beermat Entrepreneur, Maisie-Rose Byrne from Lipton Ice Tea/Unilever.

Westminster Kingsway College student business owners also had the opportunity to promote their products in the ‘Entrepreneur Market Place’ and students organised a fashion show, which showcased clothing and accessories designs by student entrepreneurs from all College Centres.

The overall winner was Foundation Degree student Linda Rippe. Her business plan for a new hotdog business with different flavours inspired from around the world impressed the judges and won her the top prize of £500 to invest in her business.

The Enterprise Festival concluded with prizes awarded to the finalists in the Vin2 Business Concept competition, sponsored by Europe Arab Bank. Students had to present their business plan for a start up enterprise to a panel of judges in a Dragon’s Den format.

Linda said: “I’m really pleased to win the Business Concept competition and funding for my business idea. I will be able to invest this money into my business and buy new equipment. Competitions organised by the College like this are really important as they give you the courage to move forward with your ideas and be more confident about my business ideas.”

Student Voice Ibrahim Sillou BTEC Level 3 National Business and Enterprise Why did you choose Westminster Kingsway College? I had started college already in Richmond but I didn’t like the work ethic of the college and was unhappy. A family member recommended Westminster Kingsway College to me and I went to an Open Day before making up my mind. I was really impressed after meeting the teachers and felt comfortable with my course choice. I believed then and now that the Business BTEC course would best equip me for my goals in life. What have you enjoyed about your course so far? My favourite part of the course was our ‘Starting a small business’ module. We learnt how to write a business plan, legal matters and financial protection to consider when setting up a business. We also learnt how to present yourself and pitch to investors. I also enjoy the practical side of our studies as we get the chance to put our classroom learning into action. What would you like to do after College? After College I would like to study Graphic Design at Middlesex University. In the future after gaining relevant experience, I would like to start a graphic design business specialising in web design and brand identity.

Students ‘build their own college’ Westminster Kingsway College is giving students a real hands-on learning experience, building its new construction teaching facility in central London. The new site is being built, with the help of students, at the College’s King’s Cross Centre. Westminster Kingsway College and Apex Construction Ltd are working together to build the brand new learning facility for the new intake of students in September. The College has been working closely with employers within the construction industry to design a set of courses that will provide young people with the skills they need to progress into work. The initiative will bring new vocational opportunities for students in Construction, Electrical Installation and Plumbing.

Andy Wilson, Principal at Westminster Kingsway College, said: “I am really excited that Westminster Kingsway College has been able to create a facility that will provide new opportunities for both adults and young people in London. Our new learning centre will enable students to gain the experience and skills required to move into jobs within the construction, electrical and plumbing sectors. These are areas where jobs are available but employers struggle to find skilled workers. The courses have been developed in collaboration with a number of local employers to ensure the programming matches their needs. We are also grateful to the London Enterprise Panel for their financial contribution to help fund the new facility. ”

Cameron Reed, Project Manager at Apex Construction Ltd, said: “We are really proud to be working on this project. Not only are we building the new facilities that will be around for a very long time, but it also feels great to know that we are contributing to the growth of future workers within our own industry.”

On my Level 3 Extended Diploma in Film and Television I have enjoyed learning how to use cameras and learning about camera techniques. I have also developed new knowledge in using professional software, such as Premier Pro and Logic Pro. The skills I have developed during my course have allowed me to produce my end of year piece, which is a film about me when I was a boy and the medical problems I experienced as a child. Completing this course has inspired me to tell my story about when I was younger and my kidney disease and how seven years ago I received a transplant. What are your plans for the future? I want to develop my film editing skills to a professional level as my ultimate career goal is to be a freelance film editor. I have been accepted to Ravensbourne to study BA Editing and Post Production and I am really looking forward to starting my Degree.

Student Voice Kevin Walker BTEC Level 3 Diploma Interactive Media and Computing Why did you choose this course? My last school was the Istituto Tecnico Industriale in Italy and I had studied Electronics and Automation, but my heart was always in graphic design as I had always been interested in it from childhood. So I chose to travel to London for the opportunity to be in the heart of the industry. Why did you decide to study at Westminster Kingsway College? I chose Westminster Kingsway College because I felt it was the best College for my course in Media. Even though I had visited other Colleges in London, it was a great fit. A big deciding factor was the wide range of modules that the course had to offer. I wanted to study varieties of media including 3D animation, film and production, graphic design and photography as well. I felt this subject area fitted the bill and I was ready to take on the challenge as I enjoy learning new things and developing myself. What would you like to do after College? I want to learn in a work environment and learn the skills that can help me grow in my career so I am really pleased that I have got a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Production and Live Events.

My focus this year is my dissertation and I’ll be writing on how nurses can address psychological problems in stroke survivors. The highlight of my time at university has been all my work placements as they have been quite varied. I have worked on the surgical ward, the stroke ward as well as in community care. It has made me develop more compassion and confidence in caring for others.” “I genuinely believe I wouldn’t be where I am without Westminster Kingsway College. I went to so many other open days with my friends but Westminster Kingsway College was the one that impressed us the most. I also really liked that it was in central London as I wanted the discipline of travelling in from where I live in Edmonton. I really enjoyed my Health and Social Care course because it had a strong emphasis on health modules and with a BTEC I had more control with our class and project work. I’m looking forward to life after university as I want to continue to train as a midwife and maybe travel as well. I’ve got quite a lot to look forward to and I’m excited about what the future holds!”

Student Voice Michael Olive Professional Chef Diploma How did you find out about Westminster Kingsway College? I joined the College’s five week Young Chef Academy Saturday course and I really enjoyed it. Going on the course gave me the confidence to apply for the Professional Chef Diploma in Year 11 and I have not looked back since. How have you found the course so far? It is a tough course for sure but I love the challenge of it. The atmosphere at the Victoria Centre is excellent as well because we support each other both inside and outside the kitchens. The teaching standards are very high as well. We get real industry training and a lot of hands-on learning. I commute every day from Buckinghamshire and it is worth the journey as the opportunities we get and the people we meet are top class. What are your plans for the future? After College I would love to work in and around London to get experience. I am especially interested in alternative ways of bringing good food to the public. My dream goal would be to own my own gastro pub in the future.

Hat trick for College at Nestlé Toque d’Or Westminster Kingsway College has become the first college in the UK to win the prestigious Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or trophy for the third time. The Westminster Kingsway College team of chef students Josie Thompson and Chris Davis and restaurant supervision student Rebecca Heath, took their prize – and walked into a place in ‘Toque d’Or’ history – at the awards dinner at London’s prestigious Dorchester Hotel. Nestlé Professional Managing Director, George Vezza, described the finalist teams as ‘inspirational’, and said that “if this is the future of our industry, then we are in good hands”.

The Westminster Kingsway College team faced five other colleges in the finals, chosen from a record number of 120 team entries. Winning team member Rebecca Heath said: “This experience will stay with us forever; everything we have learned, everything we got to try and the ways in which we developed throughout the competitions, both as a team and individuals; it’s unforgettable. We are honoured to have been selected to compete in Toque d’Or with some truly incredible rival teams and to have won has really left us speechless with emotion. It is the perfect end to all our Westminster Kingsway College studies and the most amazing start to our careers in Hospitality.”

Gary Hunter, Head of Culinary Arts, Hospitality and Food Service at Westminster Kingsway College,º said: “This is the leading hospitality student competition in the academic calendar and the experience that all the finalist student teams receive from the Toque d’Or examiners is unique. Our students are always motivated to develop and are stretched and challenged by entering national competitions such as this, which is why we place such an emphasis on competition work within our diverse curriculum.”

Drop the Mic at Westminster Kingsway College Westminster Kingsway College’s Music Performance and Music Production students brought the house down with their end of year show ‘Drop the Mic’ at the College’s King’s Cross Centre Theatre. Drop the Mic was project managed by the final year students showcasing their musical talent as a culmination of the College’s Music Season. The event provided students with a platform to perform their original compositions to the public and their fellow peers. Shaniece Douglas, BTEC Level 3 Music Performance student who performed her own material in the show, said: “I have learnt so much during my two years of study. The teachers are so good at nurturing you and helping

you to grow that I feel like I’ve really been able to find myself as an artist. We’ve all rehearsed so hard and it has been great to work with such a large band because everyone has to feed off each other to find the right balance.” Jay Ambition, Music Technology Level 3 Extended Diploma student, said: “I was one of the Head Engineers for Drop the Mic, which meant I was responsible for sound. When you’re working with live sound you’ve got to make quick decisions and be on point. The practice and experience I have gained from my course, has helped me to master this.”

Arts, said: “Our second year students are a very gifted group of musicians. For the show to be delivered so seamlessly, the Music Performance students have worked collaboratively with the Music Production students both on stage and behind the scenes to present an incredible show. The students have worked really well as a team and shown a strong sense of mutual respect between performance and production. Student Voice Elouisa Hill BTEC Performing Arts Musical Theatre Why did you choose Westminster Kingsway College? Ever since I was a little girl I knew that I wanted to be on stage. So when the time came to pick colleges I did a wide search and Westminster Kingsway College was the only college that had the course offer that I wanted covering all the modules for Musical Theatre. I applied and came in for an interview and audition at the King’s Cross Centre. That whole process was brilliant. The teachers were very warm and welcoming and I didn’t feel nervous at all. In fact I felt at home straightaway and I didn’t have far to travel from my home in Islington. What would you like to do after College? After College I will be studying BA Drama and Theatre Arts at St Mary’s University in London and I can’t wait to get started. After my full-time education, I would love to work in the theatre especially in musicals and cabaret. I have learnt so much both inside and outside the classroom and the audition preparation and career advice we received from our teachers was great. With all the support I received from college, including help with my career choices, I can now face the future without any fear.

Nicola Hume Heart FM DJ, Television Presenter and former Westminster Kingsway College student “I chose Westminster Kingsway College because my teachers at my secondary school in Enfield told me the College had a great record for Performing Arts education. They knew my biggest dream was to perform and felt that the College was the right place to be.” “My two years at Westminster Kingsway College was the absolute best time. I really appreciated the fact that we had a central London location. It made me grow up a bit, by learning to commute and stick to my timetable. Even after my classes finished I always wanted to stay late and keep learning. My tutors were inspirational and kept us focused and in line. We got a lot of support both inside and outside of class, especially when we had auditions for work and drama school. The Musical of Musicals: The Musical! Westminster Kingsway College BTEC Level 3 Musical Theatre students performed their final major project ‘The Musical of Musicals The Musical!’ at the King’s Cross Centre Theatre. In five sketches, a simple plot is dramatised in a patchwork of snippets from the shows of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerry Herman, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber, with mood and situation suited to the songwriter. Elouisa Hill, BTEC Level 3 Musical Theatre student, said: “What I’ve enjoyed most about studying musical theatre at Westminster Kingsway College is the fact that I have been able to train in what I love doing. I’ve enjoyed taking part in this musical, which has been quite funny because it’s a parody

of very famous musical composers and lyricists. I’m now going to study Theatre Arts at St Mary’s University in Twickenham.” Shekira Levy-Brown, BTEC Level 3 Musical Theatre student, said: “What I like about studying at Westminster Kingsway College is that before I came here I had no ballet training and we do ballet as part of the course, so I learnt a whole new skill that I needed to develop to be in musical theatre, which was really helpful. I have never done a parody of a musical before, so the show was something new.”

it has been really rewarding to see the students have to meet the demands of a performance that asks a lot of them, in terms of dancing, acting and singing all at the same time. The show has allowed students to get a sense of the demands and the rigours of professional production and they have really risen to the challenge. The performance was excellent and is testament to all of the hard work that they have put into it.”

Philip Collin, Musical Director and Westminster Kingsway College Tutor, said: “It’s been great to work on a show that’s got so much humour in it and

After secondary school I naturally drifted to my local sixth form but I wasn’t happy with our studies and the environment so I started searching for a new college. I chose to study at Westminster Kingsway College because of their flexible learning and the choice of modules we had on the course. I was also impressed by the lovely King’s Cross Centre!
