icture this: You’ve just come home from soccer practice, and your family has just a few minutes to eat dinner before your brother the cello player has orchestra rehearsal. What can you eat that’s fast, easy and tastes good? Believe it or not, that question was pretty much how pizza was invented.

Busy and hungry In the 18th and 19th centuries, Naples, Italy, was a busy city with many working people. Many of these people had very small homes and didn’t do much cooking, so they needed to eat on the go. Street vendors began selling flatbreads with various toppings like tomatoes, cheese and anchovies. Even though many wealthy people of the day turned up their noses at the dish, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita gave it a try in 1861 and loved it. Her favorite pizza, with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, was eventually named after her. Into the U.S. Even though pizza became popular in Naples, it didn’t take off in the rest of Italy for another 80 years. When people from Naples began immigrating

to the United States, they started selling pizzas in New York and other cities. It became popular all over the country after World War II. King Umberto and Queen Margherita are said to have received the first pizza delivery ever, but it really took off after WWII because pizza is easy to transport in a box, and because early pizza shops thought it was a good way to drum up business.

Pizza, American style Americans have long argued about what style of pizza is the best. Several cities have their own unique type. If you travel to Chicago, for example, you can get deep-dish pizza, which has toppings inside and is covered with cheese and then sauce, or thin crust, which is crispy and cut into squares. In New York, thin crust is different. Slices are large triangles, and people often fold them over when they eat them. Take a short trip to New Jersey, and you can try a tomato pie, which features sauce on top of cheese and under toppings, making the flavor of the tomatoes stand out. If you visit Michigan, you can try a Detroit-style pizza, which is thick and has crunchy edges. And in California, you can try pizza with unique toppings like avocado or egg.
