ABC11 Supports Book Harvest’s Dream Big Book Drive! Station donates 500 books for Triangle area kids DURHAM, N.C. – ABC11 Together, WTVD’s community initiatives campaign, will participate in Book Harvest’s Dream Big Book Drive on Monday, January 16 from 1pm – 4pm. ABC11 Eyewitness News anchor Tisha Powell will kick off the festivities in Durham Central Park, with a 500 book donation from ABC11. This annual MLK Day of Service project is the area’s largest single-day book drive. Book Harvest works year round to collect and provide books to children in need throughout the Triangle. It is a celebration of diversity, literacy, and book ownership for all children. “Book Harvest places an average of 3,200 books into the hands and homes of local young readers every week,” said Book Harvest’s founder and executive director Ginger Young.” “Dream Big is vital to our ability to help our community’s children grow up in book-rich homes.” Book Harvest is encouraging community members to run book drives of their own in advance of Dream Big. More than three dozen schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, places of worship, and civic groups have signed up to run book drives that culminate with the delivery of their donated books to Durham Central Park during the Big Dream event. “Opening up the eyes of children to what’s possible is a great way to honor the legacy of Dr. King, and books bring whole new worlds to our young people,” said ABC11 President and General Manager Caroline Welch. “We are so excited to be able to team up with Book Harvest to bring books into local homes.” Along with ABC11, the 500 book donation is made possible by the station’s corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company, and the non-profit First Book.
