School Holiday Program

Free, drop-in sessions for ages 5 – 12 with an adult.

Visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) in the October school holidays and join workshops and activities celebrating the wonders of water. Create a floating contraption from recycled materials, share stories about local and global water systems, learn about the connection of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture to the sea and more. This program complements two current art exhibitions not to be missed – The Derwent and Circle.

Tuesday, 10 October What floats your boat? Join educators from Resource Work Cooperative to design and make floating constructions from reclaimed waste materials. Learn about keeping our waterways free of junk along the way! Centre for Learning and Discovery 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Wandering about waterways Tasmanian waterways are home to unique creatures from giant crayfish to platypuses. Come dip your toes and share your stories about your rivers, lakes and streams. Find out how we all depend on our wonderful and powerful waterways.

Wednesday, 11 October Circling birds and cycling water Explore the Circle exhibition featuring Jeannie Baker’s picture book about the incredible journey of the bartailed godwit. Discover more about this remarkable migratory bird and its precious wetland habitat.

Friday, 13 October Thursday, 12 October Ocean’s bounty Explore the ways Tasmanian Aboriginal people harvest the resources of the sea. This interactive program includes hands-on objects and showcases how much of the traditional diet can be seen as a gourmet menu in today’s terms.
