FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 2, 2018 Contact: Adelaide Kuehn 626.578.9315 [email protected] Over 60 Organizations Back “Arts for Every Student” Bill SB 933 (Allen) jumpstarts California’s push for equal access to arts education SACRAMENTO, CA – SB 933 (Allen), the California Alliance for Arts Education’s bill to expand arts education opportunities for California students has received a significant boost as institutions such as Santa Clara County Office of Education, City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Humboldt County Office of Education, San Diego County Office of Education and California Association of Museums strongly endorse the legislation. A total of 63 organizations have submitted letters in support of the bill. California law requires arts education for every K-12 student, but the reality is that only 38% of pupils in the state truly have access to arts instruction. Students in low-income schools are more likely to go without access to arts. SB 933 begins to close the significant gap in arts education access that is driving inequality in our schools. Data shows access to arts education results in better student attendance, lower disciplinary rates, improved staff retention, increased parent participation and attendance, improved graduation rates, as well as happier, more wellrounded children and adults. “Every parent knows the impact arts education can have on their child,” said California Alliance for Arts Education Executive Director Joe Landon, “students who participate in arts education are more likely to succeed both in school and in the work force. SB 933 is an investment in California’s economy, preparing students to find their place in California’s creative industries.” Through a carefully designed competitive grant process, this one-time investment allows districts to leverage their own commitment to arts education. SB 933 will provide high-need districts as well as districts with a demonstrated commitment to the arts with an incentive to prioritize and advance access to arts education. SB 933 will be heard Senate Education Committee on April 4, 2018.
