As

President Gordon Li on the role of the principal/vice-principal

I wrote last week, the BCPVPA’s membership in the Sector Advisory Council gives our Association an opportunity to meet with the Deputy Minister and representatives of BCSSA, BCSTA, BCASBO, and FISA BC to advise and advocate on your behalf. As I was preparing for a Council meeting this past week, I reviewed the BC School Act and Regulations as they pertain to the role and duties of the principal and vice-principal. A reading of the relevant section (http:// bit.ly/1mKJQtn) is a potent reminder of the trust that is placed in all of us. Our duties are wide ranging and at the core of the success of every school community. Our duties as school and system leaders mean that the “implementation of educational programs” are reliant on our 2015 — 2016 educational leadership. At this meeting, I also had the opportunity to Board of Directors discuss the vulnerabilities of our members with respect to poorly written harassment language, which has both taken a heavy emotional toll President Gordon Li (Burnaby) on members and been a serious financial drain on the system. There [email protected] was also an opportunity to talk about the best ways to develop leaderPresident-elect Kevin Reimer (Comox Valley) ship capacity and to showcase the Association’s work on Super Vision [email protected] for Learning, the work of our Aboriginal Leadership Committee, the power of Short Course, and the growing significance of the Leadership Directors Standards for Principals and Vice-Principals in British Columbia. Susan Clough (Surrey) [email protected] Steve Dalla Lana (Prince George) [email protected] Darren Danyluk (Rocky Mountain) [email protected] David DeRosa (Kootenay-Columbia) [email protected] Heidi Grant (Nechako Lakes) [email protected] Brett Johnson (Greater Victoria) [email protected] Bryan Johnson (Sooke) [email protected] Lee Karpenko (Prince George) [email protected] Carol-Ann Leidloff (Kootenay Lake) [email protected]

Coming up tomorrow and Saturday is the second of our three Chapter Councils for the year. As usual the agenda includes updates about our ongoing activities, but there are also several special guests and opportunities for direct input and discussion. Among the guests are Pat Horstead, Project Lead, Curriculum and Assessment, Ministry of Education; Dave Byng, Deputy Minister of Education who will address members and participate in a Q&A session; Renzo del Negro, CEO of BCPSEA. Those attending will also have several formal opportunities for discussion and input on: 1) the role of Chapter Presidents; 2) professional development/new curriculum implementation; and 3) leadership development. I would like to remind everyone that nominations are open for the BCPVPA Partnership Awards. In the current Adminfo (see page 1 of this eNews for links to all the stories), I reflect on how meaningful these awards are to our great partners. I encourage all Chapters to use consider using this program to recognize some of this often unsung work.
